Book excerpt: Photophysiology, Volume II: Action of Light on Animals and Microorganisms; Photobiochemical Mechanisms; Bioluminescence presents the effects of light upon animals and microorganisms. This book discusses the fundamental photobiochemical mechanisms underlying some of the effects of light. Organized into 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the periodic functions of animals that can be manipulated by photoperiod. This text then examines the biosynthetic relationships between proteins and nucleic acids, which have been explored in part by observing the inactivating and reactivating effects of UV and visible light. Other chapters consider the physical factors that limit the performance of the eye to exact information about the environment from the light that reaches an animal. This book discusses as well the various anatomical and physiological features of the eye in relation to its limits. The final chapter deals with the occurrence of bioluminescence in nature. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, physiologists, and scientists.

Book Photobiology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lars Olof Björn
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401005818

Download or read book Photobiology written by Lars Olof Björn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photobiology - the science of light and life - begins with basic principles and the physics of light and continues with general photobiological research methods, such as generation of light, measurement of light, and action spectroscopy. In an interdisciplinary way, it then treats how organisms tune their pigments and structures to the wavelength components of light, and how light is registered by organisms. Then follow various examples of photobiological phenomena: the design of the compound eye in relation to the properties of light, phototoxicity, photobiology of the human skin and of vitamin D, photomorphogenesis, photoperiodism, the setting of the biological clock by light, and bioluminescence. A final chapter is devoted to teaching experiments and demonstrations in photobiology. This book encompasses topics from a diverse array of traditional disciplines: physics, biochemistry, medicine, zoology, botany, microbiology, etc., and makes different aspects of photobiology accessible to experts in all these areas as well as to the novice.

Book excerpt: An exhaustive review on all things algae would require a multi-volume encyclopedic work. Even then, such a tome would prove to be of limited value, as in addition to being quite complex, it would soon be outdated, as the field of phycology is full of continual revelations and new discoveries. Download or read book Photobiological Techniques written by Dennis Paul Valenzeno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fIrst edition of the Science 0/ Photobiology edited by Kendric C. Smith (plenum Press, 1977) was a comprehensive textbook of photobiology, devoting a chapter to each of the subdisciplines of the fIeld. At the end of many of these chapters there were brief descriptions of simple experiments that students could perform to demonstrate the principles discussed. In the succeeding years some photobiologists felt that a more complete publica tion of experiments in photobiology would be a useful teaching tool. Thus, in the 1980s the American Society for Photobiology (ASP) attempted to produce a laboratory manual in photobiology. Cognizant of these efforts, Kendric Smith elected to publish the second edition of The Science o/Photobiology (1989) without experiments; anticipating the comple tion of the ASP laboratory manual. Unfortunately, the initial ASP efforts met with limited success, and several years were to pass before a photobiology laboratory manual became a reality. One of the major stumbling blocks to production of an accurate and reliable laboratory manual was the requirement that the experiments be tested, not just by the author who is familiar with the techniques, but by students who may be quite new to photobiology. How could this be accomplished with limited resources? Many ideas were considered and discarded, before a workable solution was found. The catalyst that enabled the careful screening of all experiments in this book was a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) devoted entirely to this purpose.

Book Photomorphogenesis in Plants and Bacteria

Download or read book Photomorphogenesis in Plants and Bacteria written by Eberhard Schäfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-11 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique resource reviews progress made by scientists researching into how ambient changes in the wavelength, intensity, direction and duration of light environment affect plant growth and development. It explains how combinations of new research with classical photobiology and physiology have made it feasible to interpret intriguing light dependent phenomena such as phototropism, determination of flowering time, shade avoidance etc. at molecular level. Written by over 20 leading experts in the field the book covers major breakthroughs achieved in the last decade. It is generously referenced with more than 2389 bibliographic citations.
