Book Photophysics of Conjugated Polymers

Book excerpt: Poly (para-phenylenevinylene) (PPV), and its derivatives such as poly [2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethyl-hexoxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV), are typical conjugated polymers. In order to implement conjugated polymers into processable electronics technologies, we must first understand their complex photophysical properties as their efficiencies depend on the balance between exciton recombination and charge carrier formation. The inherent complexities of these materials arise from entanglement of the pi-electron system with disorder and nuclear motions of the polymer backbone. This disorder breaks the polymer chain into conformational subunits which can couple, giving rise to a set of delocalized states formed by Coulombic interactions between proximate subunits. Characteristics of PPVs include high quantum yields, non-mirror image absorption and fluorescence line shapes, and large apparent Stokes' shifts. These properties are discussed in the context of the relationships between polymer conformation, electronic structure, coupling, disorder and polymer photophysics. These important influences are often manifest in the dynamics of what happens after photoexcitation. In this work, we present 3-pulse photon echo peak shift (3PEPS) studies of conjugated polymers in both solution and film. To elucidate timescales characteristic of relaxation processes, we have simulated the 3PEPS data simultaneously with absorption and fluorescence, observing a rapid localization of the exciton in the initial ∼ 20 fs. Additional contributions to the decay of the peakshift are discussed. We also present transient anisotropy data for PPV polymers and oligomers which is compared to dynamics simulation for isolated chains of PPVs. This work demonstrates the influence of microscopic structure on ultrafast dynamics. We show that relaxation between exciton states can lead to rapid depolarization of the anisotropy, even though the spatial extent of exciton migration may be small. Generally, the connection between conformation and electronic structure is a theme throughout this thesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconducting polymers are of great interest for applications in electroluminescent devices, solar cells, batteries, and diodes. This volume provides a thorough introduction to the basic concepts of the photophysics of semiconducting polymers as well as a description of the principal polymerization methods for luminescent polymers. Divided into two main sections, the book first introduces the advances made in polymer synthesis and then goes on to focus on the photophysics aspects, also exploring how new advances in the area of controlled syntheses of semiconducting polymers are applied. An understanding of the photophysics process in this kind of material requires some knowledge of many different terms in this field, so a chapter on the basic concepts is included. The process that occurs in semiconducting polymers spans time scales that are unimaginably fast, sometimes less than a picosecond. To appreciate this extraordinary scale, it is necessary to learn a range of vocabularies and concepts that stretch from the basic concepts of photophysics to modern applications, such as electroluminescent devices, solar cells, batteries, and diodes. This book provides a starting point for a broadly based understanding of photophysics concepts applied in understanding semiconducting polymers, incorporating critical ideas from across the scientific spectrum.

Book Excited State Properties of Organic and Organometallic Oligomers Polymers and Materials and Their Solid State Applications

Download or read book Excited State Properties of Organic and Organometallic Oligomers Polymers and Materials and Their Solid State Applications written by Randi Sue Price and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to study the excited state dynamics of conjugated molecules, oligomers and polymers in the solid state and compare these photophysical properties to those found in solution. To study the triplet excited state dynamics of films a new nanosecond transient absorption instrumentation was developed. This instrument can detect transient absorption with ... A as low as of 10-3. Using this newly available instrumentation, it is possible to measure the triplet excited state dynamics so as to gain insight into several solid-state applications of photoactive molecules, oligomers, and polymers. A series of p-phenylene vinylene platinum acetylide complexes are studied for optical power limiting applications, and they are incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) monoliths. The photophysical properties of the monoliths and Triplet-triplet annihilation in conjugated co-polymers containing phenylene and p-phenylene vinylene platinum acetylide units is observed and compared against representative "monomer" complexes using transient absorption spectroscopy as a function of increasing laser fluence of the excitation pulse. The interaction between conjugated polymer, MEH-PPV, and a trimeric perfluoro-ortho-phenylene mercury complex, Hg3 is investigated in solution and in films. Finally cationic oligomers are intercalated into a clay host, and the photophysical properties of the clay-oligomer hybrid are investigated in disperse solutions and in films.

Book Single Molecule Studies of Structure property Relationships in Well defined Conjugated Oligomers and Push pull Conjugated Polymers

Download or read book Single Molecule Studies of Structure property Relationships in Well defined Conjugated Oligomers and Push pull Conjugated Polymers written by Beiyue Shao and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electronic properties of conjugated polymers are strongly dependent on their morphologies. Despite continuous research efforts in conjugated polymers (CPs) as a promising alternative to traditional inorganic semiconductors for flexible and wearable optoelectronic devices, the morphological and associated electronic properties in CPs still remain ambiguous due to their inherently heterogeneous structures both at the bulk film level and single molecule level. In the studies presented in this dissertation, single molecule spectroscopy techniques were employed to understand the single chain morphology and how it affected photophysics. Structurally well-defined model materials based on bis(2-ethylhexyl)-p-phenylene vinylene (BEH-PPV) oligomers, as a simplified model of CPs, were strategically designed to control folding at the single molecule level. Significant morphological variations were found by incorporating both rigid bent and linear linkers into the backbone, as well as by manipulating the chromophore size. The longest chromophore with the linear linker displayed best single molecule folding order and the film packing was further reinforced by the stronger [pi]-[pi] interactions between the longer conjugated segments. In addition, single chain folding via hydrogen-bonding side chain inclusion was demonstrated on the otherwise isotropic model material composed of a series of BEH-PPV trimers linked with flexible linkers. In comparison with a control oligomer system with non-hydrogen-bonding side chains, the oligomers with hydrogen-bonding motifs showed highly ordered structures and enhanced monomer interactions. These studies were further extended to a new class of emerging push-pull conjugated polymers (also known as donor-acceptor copolymers), specifically poly[N-(1- octylnonyl)-2,7-carbazole]-alt-5,5-[4’,7’-di(thien-2-yl)-2’,1’,3’-benzothiadiazole] (PCDTBT). By probing the polymer chain folding as a function of molecular weight using single molecule techniques, it was found that there are two emissive species in this material. Above a critical molecular weight, the polymer transitions from a non-interacting, more ordered conformation to a self-interacting, more isotropic conformation.

Book Photophysics of Molecular Materials

Download or read book Photophysics of Molecular Materials written by Guglielmo Lanzani and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-05-12 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon based pi-conjugated materials offer a broad range of applications, going from molecular electronics and single molecule devices to nanotechnology, plastic electronics and optoelectronics. The proper physical description of such materials is in between that of molecular solids and that of low-dimensional covalent semiconductors. This book is a comprehensive review of their elementary excitations processes and dynamics, which merges the two viewpoints, sometimes very different if not contrasting. In each chapter, a broad tutorial introduction provides a solid physical background to the topic, which is further discussed based on recent experimental results obtained via state-of-the-art techniques. Both the molecular, intra-chain character and the solid state, inter-molecular physics is addressed. Reports on single molecule and single polymer chain spectroscopy introduce the on-site phenomena. Several chapters are dedicated to nano-probes, steady state and transient spectroscopies. The highly ordered state, occurring in single crystals, is also discussed thoroughly. Finally, less conventional tools such as THz spectroscopy are discussed in detail. The book provides a useful introduction to the field for newcomers, and a valid reference for experienced researchers in the field.
