The Institute was organized to provide a com~rehen8ive presentation of this new and rapidly developing field for those interested in applying these techniques to problems in many areas including Physics, Biology, Engineering and Chemistry. The lectures were divided into three principal categories: the first Basic Theory (Photon Statistics and Correlation, Scattering Theory), secondly Instrumentation (Correlation Techniques, Light Beating), and the third Areas of Application (Gas and Liquid Dynamics, Critical Phenomena, Biology). The seminars provided detailed presentations of applications to a number of specific problems. - Although the selection of topics was inevitably li mi ted, i t was the hope of the organizing committee that the lectures would provide a broad coverage appropriate for the needs of the interdisciplinary audience represented by the participants, and that this volume would serve for some years to come as a useful introduction for those entering the field. This volume contains the invited lecture courses and seminars and some of the contributed seminars presented at this Institute. Much had happened in the field in the intervening three years and it was the intention of the Organising Committee to build on the previous courses • without detailed repetition of fundamentals. and to extend the coverage widely over the use of photon-correla tion methods for the temporal or spectral analysis of fluctuating light sources. In particular, the rapid expansion of these methods for the measurement of macroscopic motion by Laser Doppler Veloci metry was given special emphasis as is indicated in the title. Book excerpt: Photon correlation is a kind of spectroscopy designed to identify optical frequency shifts and line-broadening effects in the range of many MHz down to a few Hz. The optical intensity is measured in terms of single photon detection events which result in current pulses at the output of photomulti plier tubes. This signal is processed in real time in a special-purpose paral lel processor known as a correlator. The resulting photon correlation func tion, a function in the time domain, contains the desired spectral informa tion, which may be extracted by a suitable algorithm. Due to the non-intrusive nature and the sound theoretical basis of photon correlation, the phenomena under study are not disturbed, and the parameters in question can be precisely evaluated. For these reasons photon correlation has become a valuable and in many instances indispensable technique in two distinct fields. One of these is velocimetry in fluid flow. This includes hydro- and aerodynamic processes in liquids, gases, or flames where the velo city field may be stationary, time periodic, or turbulent, and may range from micrometers per second for motion inside biological cells to one kilometer per second for supersonic flow. The other major field is stochastic particle propagation due to Brownian motion.

Fourier transforms are used to obtain solutions of time-dependent Schrödinger equations, and coupled differential equations are transformed to coupled linear equations that in most cases can be readily solved. This book consists of nine chapters and begins with an overview of some of the properties of the classical field and its interaction with particles, focusing on those aspects needed for a better understanding of quantum theory. The Hamiltonian formalism is used to quantize the field, and the density of states of the radiation field is considered. The following chapters focus on a few Fourier transform techniques and their application to such areas as coherence properties of the field and amplitude and intensity correlations; the theory of angular momentum; the properties of irreducible tensors; quantization of the radiation field; and photon states. The interaction of a two-level atom with single modes of the radiation field is also discussed, along with spontaneous emission and decay processes; the evolution of coupled atomic states; the frequency distribution of emitted radiation; and radiative excitation and fluorescence. This monograph is intended for students and researchers in pure and applied physics.
