Download or read book Photon Physics at the LHC written by Michael Hance and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the first studies of Standard Model photon production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using the ATLAS detector. Standard Model photon production is a large background in the search for Higgs bosons decaying into photon pairs, and is thus critical to understand. The thesis explains the techniques used to reconstruct and identify photon candidates using the ATLAS detector, and describes a measurement of the production cross section for isolated prompt photons. The thesis also describes a search for the Higgs boson in which the analysis techniques used in the measurement are exploited to reduce and estimate non-prompt backgrounds in diphoton events.
Download or read book Photon Working Switches written by Yasushi Yokoyama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on photoswitches. The objective of the book is to introduce researchers and graduate course students who are interested in "photon-working switches" not only to the fundamentals but also to the latest research being carried out in this field. Light can reach a target substrate without any physical contact to deliver energy. The energy can induce changes in the structure of the molecules included in the substrate so that its properties and functions are made switchable by light irradiation. When a substrate is able to revert to its original state, this system can be regarded as a "photon-working switch". The terms "photon-working switches" or "photoswitches" are almost equivalent in meaning to "photochromism"; however, they focus on the "switching of functions" of chemical species rather than their "reversible transformation". Most of the authors of this volume are members of PHENICS, an international research group on organic molecular photoswitches composed of research institutions from France, Japan, Russia, China and Germany. Since its inception in 2008, PHENICS has promoted active research to develop the field. This book commemorates the group's eighth year of collaborative research.

Download or read book The Two Photon Decay of the 11 2 Isomer of 137Ba and Mixed Symmetry States of 92 94Zr and 94Mo written by Christopher Walz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-24 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on new electromagnetic decay mode in nuclear physics. The first part of the thesis presents the observation of the two-photon decay for a transition where the one-photon decay is allowed. In the second part, so called quadrupole mixed-symmetry is investigated in inelastic proton scattering experiments. In 1930 Nobel-prize winner M. Goeppert-Mayer was the first to discuss the two-photon decay of an exited state in her doctoral thesis. This process has been observed many times in atomic physics. However in nuclear physics data is sparse. Here this decay mode has only been observed for the special case of a transition between nuclear states with spin and parity quantum number 0+. For such a transition, the one-photon decay – the main experimental obstacle to observe the two-photon decay – is forbidden. Furthermore, the energy sharing and angular distributions were measured, allowing conclusions to be drawn about the multipoles contributing to the two-photon transition. Quadrupole mixed-symmetry states are an excitation mode in spherical nuclei which are sensitive to the strength of the quadrupole residual interaction. A new signature for these interesting states is presented which allows identification of mixed-symmetry states independently of electromagnetic transition strengths. Furthermore this signature represents a valuable additional observable to test model predictions for mixed-symmetry states.

This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Electron Photon Shower Distribution Function written by H. Messel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 1519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron-Photon Shower Distribution Function: Tables for Lead, Copper and Air Absorbers presents numerical results of the electron-photon shower distribution function for lead, copper, and air absorbers. Electron or photon interactions, including Compton scattering, elastic Coulomb scattering, and the photo-electric effect, are taken into account in the calculations. This book consists of four chapters and begins with a review of both theoretical and experimental work aimed at deducing the characteristics of the cascade produced from the propagation of high energy electrons and photons through matter. The next two chapters discuss in some detail the method of simulating the electron-photon cascade on a digital computer and present the cross-sections for all processes that are simulated in the program written for the English-Electric-Leo KDF9. The manner in which each process is subjected to computer simulations is described. The results come from two computer programs: the first was written for SILLIAC and the second for KDF9. This monograph will be a valuable resource for computer scientists, mathematicians, and physicists.

Download or read book Multi Photon Quantum Information Science and Technology in Integrated Optics written by Jonathan C.F. Matthews and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photons are an attractive option for testing fundamental quantum physics and developing new quantum-enhanced technology, including highly advanced computers and simulators, as well as precision sensing beyond shot-noise. Traditionally, bulk optical components have been bolted onto optical benches to realize metre-scale quantum circuits. However this approach is ultimately proving unwieldy for increasing the complexity and for scaling up to practical quantum technologies based on photons. The work presented here demonstrates a series of quantum photonic devices based on waveguide circuits embedded in miniature monolithic chips. This represents a paradigm shift in the underlying architecture of quantum optics and provides key building blocks for all-optical and hybrid quantum technologies.

Download or read book Study of Double Parton Scattering in Photon 3 Jets Final State written by You-Hao Chang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mainly focuses on the study of photon + 3 jets final state in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s = 7TeV, searching for patterns of two (or more) distinct hard scatterings in the same collision, i.e the so-called Double Parton Scattering (DPS). A new method by using Monte Carlo generators was performed and provides higher order corrections to the description of the Single Parton Scattering (SPS) background. Further it is investigated whether additional contributions from DPS can improve the agreement between the measured data and the Monte Carlo predictions. The current theoretical uncertainties related to the SPS background are found to be larger than expectation. At the same time a rich set of DPS-sensitive measurements is reported for possible further interpretation.
