Book The Golden Decade

Download or read book The Golden Decade written by William Heick and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) in San Francisco hired renowned photographer Ansel Adams to establish one of the first fine art photography departments in the United States. The caliber of teachers and guest instructors assembled there under the new directorship of Douglas McAgy was unmatched, and the school was one of the most avant-garde art schools of its time. On hand were photographers Adams and Minor White, along with Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Lisette Model, Nancy and Beaumont Newhall, and Homer Page. Three former students of Adams and White - William Heick, Ira H. Latour and C. Cameron Macauley, later known as the "Three Musketeers" - began planning a book that would focus on CSFA's photography department, covering the years between 1945 and 1955, the period known as "The Golden Decade." It was a lucky coincidence when Ken Ball and his wife Victoria Whyte Ball (whose father, Don Whyte, had bequeathed them an abundance of negatives and contact prints from his student years at CSFA) joined them. Together this team has embarked on an important journey into photography's past that is embodied in this book.

Book Sounds of Two Eyes Opening

Download or read book Sounds of Two Eyes Opening written by Johan Kugelberg and published by Sinecure Books. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spot landed in Hermosa Beach, CA in the mid-1970s. A serious musician, he helped build Media Art Recording Studio and stumbled into photojournalism via Easy Reader, the local news weekly. Hermosa proved to be a crossroads abounding with oddball roller skaters who were mostly overshadowed by Venice disco rollers and the Dogtown-inspired leaps into professional skateboarding (never mind that the first skateboard competition ever was in Hermosa in 1963). Then, in the late 70s, a cultural shift hit, fueled largely by music. This time the South Bay was in the vanguard. Spot became the in-house producer and engineer at SST Records--the label founded in 1978 by Greg Ginn as a vehicle for Black Flag, the band that defined LA hardcore. Between 1979 and 1985, he recorded, mixed, produced or co-produced most of SST's pivotal acts, working on all of Black Flag's greatest releases, and on classic albums by the Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Saint Vitus, Descendents, Big Boys, Hüsker Dü, The Dicks, Subhumans and Misfits. Throughout this period, Spot remained a master photographer who documented various Los Angeles subcultures in intelligently composed black-and-white photographs. As this volume reveals, there was no distinction between the musical and the visual--he heard what he saw; saw what he heard--hence, the title of this collection. Spanning the late 1960s through the early 1980s, Sounds of Two Eyes Opening offers an amazing portrait of Southern California beach life, set against the dark clubs and rehearsal spaces of the burgeoning punk scene.

Book California Deathrock

Download or read book California Deathrock written by Amelia G and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the introduction to California Deathrock: Subculture Portraits by Forrest Black and Amelia G: Since the mid-1990's, Forrest and I have been setting up full blown location studios in all sorts of unlikely and underground places. We've set up lights and backdrops in wind-blown theater parking lots in the middle of the night, while bands played their shows, in co-ed strip clubs, and crammed behind the pool table in the back of noisy dive bars. Sometimes it's a real challenge, but this is how we shoot our personal work. We like to capture the moments in their real environments. For this compendium, we chose only images which were actually shot in California. Some of the deathrockers in this volume grew up here and some are transplants and some were just passing through. Forrest and I had a lot of debates, while hunched over a contact sheet with loupes in hand, over whether a particular photo was really more deathrock or more Gothic, as we needed a methodology for honing down what to share. When we started shooting, there were very few photographers who would ever shoot anyone gothic or punk or tattooed or pierced or fetish and the few who did approached the subject matter in a gritty unattractive purely anthropological manner, like they were going to the zoo. We wanted to create respectful and celebratory work. We wanted to capture the joy and tribal sense of community which we experienced in the various subterranean worlds we documented. We wanted the flamboyant beauty we saw to resonate with other people the way it did for us. We wanted the people we photographed to look the way they looked in our minds' eyes when we recalled the excitement of nightlife at midnight. For nearly a quarter of a century, Amelia G and Forrest Black have been documenting subculture in America. Their work has been published by everyone from Rolling Stone to Playboy and, of course, the seminal publication they are best known for, Blue Blood. Their remarkable portraits benefit from a combination of social anthropology and celebration of community, simultaneously presenting documentary and aspirational artistic ideal. The hallmarks of their distinctive photographic style are viscerally saturated colors and an extraordinary talent for finding intense star quality in their often unusual subjects. Amelia G did her undergraduate work at Wesleyan University and graduate at University of Michigan. Her thesis was a cross-cultural deconstruction of vampires in popular culture. Forrest Black is an award-winning designer whose work has been covered by venues from Print to MTV. He likes black cats and beer. Home base is Los Angeles. "The refreshingly fascinating photography of Amelia G and Forrest Black successfully captures the alluring mystique of the members of our society's underground sub-cultures, and presents these often-misunderstood individuals in a sexy, provocative, and yet approachable way." --Linda "FC" Fletch, Editor, Tattoo Savage magazine "I like their style of cross processing, and I like the fact that they go out into clubland and photograph the wildlife." --Matt Riser, publisher, New Grave magazine "If West Coast deathrock had official scene photographers, they would be Amelia G and Forrest Black." --Kate Deathrock, Deathrock.org

Book California Girls

Download or read book California Girls written by and published by Damiani Limited. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For American photographer Sasha Eisenman, California connotes a state of mind and a way of life, conjuring not only golden light, blue skies, beaches, deserts, canyons and mountains, but also one particular image: the California Girl. Sasha Eisenman: California Girls captures this icon and her environment, investigating her representations through nudes and seminudes against beautiful Californian backdrops. Shooting entirely on medium-format film and dead stock Polaroid, Eisenman sought out a group of women who represented the unique style, personality and vibrancy of California and photographed them collaboratively, without styling, at backyard parties, surf trips and music shows. The images resulting from these shoots are collected here in Eisenman's first photo book. Each image is accompanied by an interview with its subject, allowing the viewer both a visual and textual entry into the sensuality, beauty, individuality and lives of the women photographed. Eisenman's work has appeared in magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Teen Vogue, Glamour, InStyle, Elle, Interview, Jalouse, L'Officiel, iD, V Man, Playboy, Spin and others, and he has photographed countless celebrities, from Lady Gaga to Jennifer Lawrence.
