Book excerpt: This book "is a guided tour of the cameraperson's art, from the beginnings (the camera obscura, the daguerreotype) to the present day (the digital revolution). We follow the photographer through the city streets, the war zone, the fashion studio and the art gallery, always in search of 'the decisive moment'. Focusing as much on the person behind the camera as on the final image, Dave Yorath looks at the conflicts between the photograph as impersonal record and as a form of self-expression ; between the 'real' image and its digitally manipulated alter ego ; between the photographer as technician and the photographer as artists. Along the way he provides some practical hints and tips to keep you snapping happily." - book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the 1950s dawned, a new level of sexual openness developed in behavior and dress. In magazines and on beaches, women appeared in revealing two-piece bathing suits called bikinis. Bunny Yeager, model and commercial photographer, forged a unique role in 1952, photographing bikinis and the beautiful women who wore them. This collection of Bunny's work from the 1950s features 169 original photographs and featuring little known models and women she helped launch to fame, such as Betty Page. The bikinis they wore were often of Bunny's own creation, sewn with her own hands. She says, "My ability helped me sell photographs to men's magazines and compete with male photographers. They didn't know how to sew!" Many of her original designs still influence styles today. This collection of photographs, along with Bunny's reflections on her life and career, the models, and the era, make an insightful addition to the literature on this photographic pioneer.

Book The Swimsuit Issue and Sport

Download or read book The Swimsuit Issue and Sport written by Laurel R. Davis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue demonstrates how the magazine encourages individual and institutional practices that create and maintain inequality. Laurel Davis illustrates how the interactions of media production, media texts, media consumption, and social context influence meaning. Individuals' interpretations of and reactions to the magazine are influenced by their views about gender and sexuality, views that have been shaped by their social experiences. Based on extensive interviews with Sports Illustrated producers and consumers, as well as analysis of every swimsuit issue from the first in 1964 to those of the 1990s, the book argues that Sports Illustrated uses the swimsuit issue to secure a large male audience by creating a climate of hegemonic masculinity. This practice produces considerable profit but on the way to the bank tramples women, gays, lesbians, people of color, and residents of the postcolonialized world.

Book The Routledge Companion to Photography Theory

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Photography Theory written by Mark Durden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With newly commissioned essays by some of the leading writers on photography today, this companion tackles some of the most pressing questions about photography theory’s direction, relevance, and purpose. This book shows how digital technologies and global dissemination have radically advanced the pluralism of photographic meaning and fundamentally transformed photography theory. Having assimilated the histories of semiotic analysis and post-structural theory, critiques of representation continue to move away from the notion of original and copy and towards materiality, process, and the interdisciplinary. The implications of what it means to ‘see’ an image is now understood to encompass, not only the optical, but the conceptual, ethical, and haptic experience of encountering an image. The 'fractal' is now used to theorize the new condition of photography as an algorithmic medium and leads us to reposition our relationship to photographs and lend nuances to what essentially underlies any photography theory — that is, the relationship of the image to the real world and how we conceive what that means. Diverse in its scope and themes, The Routledge Companion to Photography Theory is an indispensable collection of essays and interviews for students, researchers, and teachers. The volume also features extensive images, including beautiful colour plates of key photographs.
