Book excerpt: One of the foremost American painters of the 19th century, Eakins (1844-1916) was also a pioneer photographer, his most innovative aspect being his emphasis on the nude, then rarely encountered in the US. This catalogue of the Eakins photographs in the Pennsylvania Academy's Charles Bregler collection includes about three-fourths of Eakins' photographic output. It describes the entire collection of 648 images, reproducing 173 bandw photographs, 52 duotones, and a portfolio section of 16 tritones. The accompanying essays suggest new ways of looking at the photographs in terms not only of Eakins' own art but also of the history of the medium. 10.25x9.75" Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book New York to Hollywood written by Barbara McCandless and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Struss (1886-1981) was a master of both still and motion picture photography. A native of New York City, he first studied photography with Clarence White and soon mastered the tenets of pictorialism. Alfred Stieglitz featured his work in a 1910 exhibition and a 1912 issue of Camera Work and invited Struss to become a member - as it turned out, the last member - of the Photo-Secession. New York to Hollywood: The Photography of Karl Struss surveys this consummate artist's long career with the camera, including his pioneering color photography using the autochrome process, his photographic explorations of New York and Europe before War World I, his images of Hollywood stars and western landscapes and seascapes, and his motion picture work. Essayist Bonnie Yochelson surveys his early work in New York, Richard Koszarski his career in cinematography, and Barbara McCandless examines how Struss' background and early work not only led him to Hollywood but greatly contributed to the artistry of the still-young film industry there. John and Susan Edwards Harvith, who rediscovered Struss' work in the 1970's and interviewed him at length in his later years, round out the portrait of both the man and the artist.

Book excerpt: A glimpse inside the darkroom--and into the strategies of renowned photographers This handsome volume offers an innovative perspective on the artistic processes of some of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. For decades before the advent of digital technology, the proof sheet or contact sheet was vital to the practice of photography. Photographers using roll film first saw positive images in the small-scale grid of the contact, which was marked for printing and served as a lasting reference. Because contact sheets typically remained out of view, they offer a privileged window into the working process. Photographers also recognized aesthetic potential in the proof sheet itself and occasionally presented the contact grid as a finished work of art. The lively but largely unexplored territory of the contact sheet is richly represented in the previously unpublished collection assembled by Mark Schwartz and Bettina Katz. As he charts this territory, Peter Galassi offers fresh insights into the work of Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Harry Benson, Harry Callahan, Larry Fink, Robert Frank, Emmet Gowin, Philippe Halsman, Arnold Newman, Irving Penn, and others. Book I Know How Furiously Your Hear T Is Beating

Download or read book I Know How Furiously Your Hear T Is Beating written by and published by . This book was released on 2019-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Taking its name from a line in the Wallace Stevens' poem "The Gray Room," Alec Soth's latest book is a lyrical exploration of the limitations of photographic representation. While these large-format color photographs are made all over the world, they aren't about any particular place or population. By a process of intimate and often extended engagement, Soth's portraits and images of his subject's surroundings involve an enquiry into the extent to which a photographic likeness can depict more than the outer surface of an individual, and perhaps even plumb the depths of something unknowable about both the sitter and the photographer"--The publisher.

Book Strong on Music

Download or read book Strong on Music written by Vera Brodsky Lawrence and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-02 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Strong on Music Vera Brodsky Lawrence uses the diaries of lawyer and music lover George Templeton Strong as a jumping-off point from which to explore every aspect of New York City's musical life in the mid-nineteenth century. This third and final volume ranges across opera, orchestral and chamber music, blackface minstrels, military bands, church choirs, and even concert saloons. Among the many striking scenes vividly portrayed in Repercussions are the rapturous reception of Verdi's Ballo in maschera in 1861; the impact of the Civil War on New York's music scene, from theaters closing as their musicians enlisted to the performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at every possible occasion; and open-air concerts in the developing Central Park. Throughout, Lawrence mines a treasure trove of primary source materials including daily newspapers, memoirs, city directories, and architectural drawings. Indispensable for scholars, Repercussions will also fascinate music fans with its witty writing and detailed descriptions of the cultural life of America's first metropolis. Formerly a concert pianist, Vera Brodsky Lawrence spent the last third of her life as a historian of American music (she died in 1996). She was editor of The Piano Works of Louis Moreau Gottschalk and The Complete Works of Scott Joplin. On Volume 1: "A marvelous book. There is nothing like it in the literature of American music."—Harold C. Schonberg, New York Times Book Review On Volume 2: "A monumental achievement."—Victor Fell Yellin, Opera Quarterly

Book The Band Photographs 1968 1969

Download or read book The Band Photographs 1968 1969 written by and published by Backbeat Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Book). Once in a while a photographer gains the trust of an artist or a band, and his work fuses with that of the artist in such a way that the two become married in the public consciousness. One can think of David Duncan's pictures of Picasso at work or Alfred Wertheimer's pictures of Elvis backstage in 1956. Elliott Landy's chronicle of The Band from 1968-1969 is of similar importance. He was trusted so deeply that this group of photographs is as intimate a portrait of a group of musicians inventing a new music as you are ever likely to come across. Today we call that music "Americana," and it is played all over the world by everyone from Mumford and Sons to the Zac Brown Band. But in 1968, when Elliott first started making these pictures, it was played by six musicians in the town of Woodstock, New York Bob Dylan and a group called The Hawks. They later changed their name to The Band. They had been The Hawks for five years when Bob Dylan pulled them out of Tony Mart's dive bar on the Jersey Shore to be his band.
