Book Resistance to Photodynamic Therapy in Cancer

Download or read book Resistance to Photodynamic Therapy in Cancer written by Valentina Rapozzi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive review of resistance induced by photodynamic therapy (PDT) in tumor cells. Understanding the underlying mechanisms in this process leads to the improvement of therapeutic modality, in combination with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. Photodynamic therapy is a minimally invasive therapeutic procedure that can exert a selective or preferential cytotoxic activity toward malignant cells. The procedure involves administration of an intrinsically non-toxic photosensitizing agent (PS) followed by irradiation at a wavelength corresponding to a visible absorption band of the sensitizer. In the presence of oxygen, a series of events lead to direct tumor cell death, damage to the microvasculature, and induction of a local inflammatory reaction. Studies reveal that PDT can be curative, particularly in early stage tumors and this volume explores the potential of PDT, but also reveals strategic approaches to overcome resistance in tumor cells.

Book Photodynamic Tumor Therapy

Download or read book Photodynamic Tumor Therapy written by Moser and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiles quantitative data on newly developed photosensizers for the photodynamic therapy of cancer and other modalities, which are otherwise scattered through the literature. The collection of reviews first considers the biophysical and biomedical definitions of photosensitivity and phototoxicity on the molecular and cellular level in order to standardize results. Then they group the available data on naturally occurring or chemically synthesized compounds into synoptic tables and graphs; describe methods of preparation and purity control, and application schedules to cell cultures and experimental animals; and project future applications of the approach. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Advances in Photodynamic Therapy Research first presents some basic concepts about the photodynamic diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic diseases. Some important considerations to improve photodynamic therapy outcomes are addressed based on experiments employing different light sources and application protocols. The most important clinical applications of this technique include cancer therapy as well as the treatment of microbial infections. Photodynamic therapy is also a promising approach for the treatment of oral diseases such as periodontitis, oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, herpes simplex viral infections, and root canal infections. The authors summarize recent advances, mainly from their laboratory, on the development of conjugated polymer nanoparticles as advanced photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy and photodynamic inactivation applications"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological interactions of visible light with photosensitizers have been studied for over a century while controlled clinical applications of light and photosensitizers to treat solid tumors, known as photodynamic therapy, have been evolving since the mid 1970’s. In Photodynamic Therapy: Methods and Protocols, leading PDT scientists and clinicians provide the first comprehensive collection of methods and protocols specifically related to relevant mechanistic, dosimetric, preclinical, and clinical procedures used in current PDT research. Reflecting the growing number of studies demonstrating that immunological, tumor microenvironmental, and vascular responses are all contributing to PDT treatment outcomes, the contents of this volume move beyond the more traditional PDT concepts in order to investigate the numerous signal transduction and cell death pathways involved. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and notes which highlight tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Photodynamic Therapy: Methods and Protocols is an ideal guide for new investigators just starting out in PDT research as well as seasoned investigators changing the direction of their research with the intention of exploring this vital field of study.
