Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photodissociation induced by the absorption of single photons permits the detailed study of molecular dynamics such as the breaking of bonds, internal energy transfer and radiationless transitions. The availability of powerful lasers operating over a wide frequency range has stimulated rapid development of new experimental techniques which make it possible to analyse photodissociation processes in unprecedented detail. This text elucidates the achievements in calculating photodissociation cross-sections and fragment state distributions from first principles, starting from multi-dimensional potential energy surfaces and the Schrödinger equation of nuclear motion. Following an extended introduction in which the various types of observables are outlined, the book summarises the basic theoretical tools, namely the time-independent and the time-dependent quantum mechanical approaches as well as the classical picture of photodissociation. The discussions of absorption spectra, diffuse vibrational structures, the vibrational and rotational state distributions of the photofragments form the core of the book. More specific topics such as the dissociation of vibrationally excited molecules, emission during dissociation, or nonadiabatic effects are also discussed. It will be of interest to graduate students and senior scientists working in molecular physics, spectroscopy, molecular collisions and molecular kinetics.

Book Molecular Photodissociation Dynamics

Download or read book Molecular Photodissociation Dynamics written by M. N. R. Ashfold and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Photodissociation Dynamics was the first title to be published in this series and provides overviews of selected aspects of the subject. The experimental study of photodissociation has been revolutionized by the ready availability of intense, tunable laser sources, operational over a substantial portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, and with parallel developments in theoretical chemistry has opened the way to detailed theoretical study of the fragmentation dynamics of the excited state. This book will therefore be essential reading for those working in this area.

Book Photofragment Translational Spectroscopy of Three Body Dissociations and Free Radicals

Download or read book Photofragment Translational Spectroscopy of Three Body Dissociations and Free Radicals written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes several three-body dissociations and the photodissociation of methyl radicals studied using photofragment translational spectroscopy. The first chapter provides an introduction to three body dissociation, examines current experimental methodology, and includes a discussion on the treatment of photofragment translational spectroscopy data arising from three-body fragmentation. The ultraviolet photodissociation of azomethane into two methyl radicals and nitrogen is discussed in chapter 2. Chapter 3 describes the photodissociation of acetone at 248 nm and 193 nm. At 248 nm the translational energy release from the initial C-C bond cleavage matches the exit barrier height and a comparison with results at 266 nm suggests that E{sub T} is invariant to the available energy. A fraction of the nascent CH3CO radicals spontaneously dissociate following rotational averaging. The E{sub T} for the second C-C bond cleavage also matches the exit barrier height. At 193 nm the experimental data can be successfully fit assuming that the dynamics are analogous to those at 248 nm. A simplified model of energy partitioning which adequately describes the experimental results is discussed. Experiments on acetyl halides provide additional evidence to support the proposed acetone dissociation mechanism. A value of 17.0"1.0 kcal/mole for the barrier height, CH3CO decomposition has been determined. The photodissociation of methyl radical at 193 nm and 212.8 nm is discussed in the chapter 5. The formation of CH2 (1A{sub l}) and H (2S) was the only single photon dissociation pathway observed at both wavelengths.

Book Photodissociation Spectroscopy and Dynamics of the Vinoxy CH sub 2 CHO Radical

Download or read book Photodissociation Spectroscopy and Dynamics of the Vinoxy CH sub 2 CHO Radical written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photodissociation spectroscopy and dynamics of the vinoxy (CH[sub 2]CHO) radical have been studied using fast beam photofragment translational spectroscopy. The photodissociation cross section over the B[sup 2]A[double-prime][l-arrow] X[sup 2]A[double-prime] band is measured, and photofragment translational energy and angular distributions are obtained at several excitation energies. For CH[sub 2]CHO, predissociation is observed over the entire band, including several transitions near the band origin which were seen previously in laser-induced fluorescence experiments. Two dissociation channels are seen: CH[sub 3]+ CO and H+ CH[sub 2]CO. The CH[sub 3]+ CO channel was investigated in considerable detail and appears to proceed via internal conversion to the CH[sub 2]CHO ground state followed by isomerization to CH[sub 3]CO and subsequent dissociation. The translational energy distributions for this channel suggest an isomerization barrier in the range of 2 eV with respect to CH[sub 3]+ CO products.
