Book excerpt: We report preliminary results of photodisintegration of deuteron and 3He measured with CLAS at Jefferson Lab. We have extracted the beam-spin asymmetry for the {vector [gamma]}d → pn reaction at photon energies from 1.1 GeV to 2.3 GeV and proton center-of-mass (c.m.) angles between 35° and 135° . Our data show interesting evolution of the angular dependence of the observable as the photon energy increases. The energy dependence of the beam-spin asymmetry at 90 shows a change of slope at photon energy of 1.6 GeV. A comparison of our data with model calculations suggests that a fully non-perturbative treatment of the underlying dynamics may be able to describe the data better than a model based on hard scattering. We have observed onset of dimensional scaling in the cross section of two-body photodisintegration of 3He at remarkably low energy and momentum transfer, which suggests that partonic degrees of freedom may be relevant for the description of nuclei at energies lower than previously considered.

Book Correlated Proton proton Pairs from the High energy Photodisintegration of Light Nuclei

This book was released on 1961 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targets of He, Li, C, and Al were irradiated by bremsstrahlung of 257 Mev maximum photon energy. Photodisintegrations which involve two fast protons were observed. Energy and angular distributions of the coincident protons, one of which was always observed at a laboratory angle corresponding roughly to 90 degrees in the center of mass of the two protons, were measured. The primary absorption of the photon occurs on neutron-proton pairs. The proton-proton pairs arise from subsequent internal scattering of the primary photoneutron from other protons in the nucleus. No evidence is seen that mesons are reabsorbed on nucleon pairs which do not include the parent nucleon. An upper limit is established for this process. This experiment supports the photomeson production models which do not depend upon the true absorption of mesons as they pass through nuclear matter. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50 years ago, in 1934, Chadwick and Goldhaber (ChG 34) published a paper entitled "A 'Nuclear Photo-effect': Disintegration of the Diplon by -y-Rays."l in the introduction: They noted "By analogy with the excitation and ionisation of atoms by light, one might expect that any complex nucleus should be excited or 'ionised', that is, disintegrated, by -y-rays of suitable energy", and furthermore: "Heavy hydrogen was chosen as the element first to be examined, because the diplon has a small mass defect and also because it is the simplest of all nuclear systems and its properties are as important in nuclear theory as the hydrogen is in atomic theory". Almost at the same time, in 1935, the first theoretical paper on the photodisinte gration of the deuteron entitled "Quantum theory of the diplon" by Bethe and Peierls (BeP 35) appeared. It is not without significance that these two papers mark the be ginning of photonuclear physics in general and emphasize in particular the special role the two-body system has played in nuclear physics since then and still plays. A steady flow of experimental and theoretical papers on deuteron photo disintegration and its inverse reaction, n-p capture, shows the continuing interest in this fundamental process (see fig. 1.1).

Book The Structure of Light Nuclei

Download or read book The Structure of Light Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last several years, tremendous advances both in experiment and theory have been made in understanding the structure of light nuclei. The experimental advances have benefited greatly from the new, high intensity CW machine (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab and new experimental techniques utilizing polarization degrees of freedom at various laboratories. Tremendous progress has also been made in nuclear few-body theory, from a successful standard model of nuclear physics based on modern two-nucleon potentials as well as modern three-nucleon forces to the exact three-body calculation extended into the continuum by solving the corresponding Faddeev equations. In this talk, I will review recent experimental progress in understanding the structure of light nuclei focusing on the results of deuteron elastic form factors, deuteron tensor polarization, deuteron photodisintegration, and that of the 3He magnetic form factor.

Book Photodisintegration Studies of Astrophysically Relevant P nuclei

Download or read book Photodisintegration Studies of Astrophysically Relevant P nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the light elements up to iron (Fe) are formed by successive rounds of ther- monuclear fusion burning in the stellar interiors. The nuclei heavier than iron (Z>26) are being synthesized mainly by neutron-capture reactions - the astrophysical r-and s-processes. There are 35 neutron dēcient stable isotopes between Se and Hg which are shielded from the rapid neutron capture by stable isobars. These so-called p-nuclei are produced in explosive stellar environments via photodisintegration reactions like (°, n), (°, p) and (°, ®) on r- or s- seed nuclei. The reaction rates of the p-nuclei are mostly based on theoretical parameteriza- tions using statistical model calculations. At the bremsstrahlung facility of the superconducting electron accelerator ELBE, photon-induced reactions of the p-nuclei are being studied. In the scope of this thesis work, photodisintegration measurements of the p-nuclei 92Mo and 144Sm have been performed via the photoactivation technique. The residual nuclei resulting from photoactivation were studied via °-ray spectroscopy. For the decay measurements of short-lived nuclei, a pneumatic delivery system has been used. In the case of 144Sm(°, p) and 144Sm(°, ®) reactions, the activated samarium samples with very low counting statistics were measured at the underground laboratory "Felsenkeller" in Dresden. The experimental activa- tion yields for the 144Sm (°, n), (°, p) and (°; ®) and the 92Mo(°; ®) reactions were determined. It is to be emphasized that the (°, p) and (°; ®) reactions were measured for the ̄rst time in a laboratory at astrophysically relevant energies. In all the mentioned experiments, special care was taken to determine the endpoint energy of the bremsstrahlung spectra by using the photodisintegration of deuteron. The 197Au(°, n)196Au reaction has been established as an activation standard. The photoactivation yields for the 197Au(°, n) and 144Sm(°; n) reactions have been compared to the yield calcul.
