Book Primary Photo Processes in Biology and Medicine

Download or read book Primary Photo Processes in Biology and Medicine written by R. V. Bensasson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently there have been major developments in the experimental techniques available for the study of the primary events following the absorption of ultra-violet and visible radiation by biological systems. These techniques, which include absorption, emission, resonance Raman, electron spin resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance and photoacoustic spectroscopies, can be used to study the fate of transient species with lifetimes ranging from seconds to nanoseconds and extending in some cases, such as laser flash photolysis, to pico 12 15 (10- S)- and even femtoseconds (10- s). In parallel with these developments there has been a dramatic increase in the use of light in medicine via the direct photochemical alteration of endogenous molecules (phototherapy) or via the photoactivation of drugs in the skin or other tissue (photochemotherapy). Thus neonatal hyperbili rubinaemia can be routinely treated by phototherapy and psoriasis is frequently treated by PUVA photochemotherapy. A promising new photo chemotherapy used the phototoxicity of porphyrin drugs activated by red light to destroy solid malignant tumors. While some of the overall qualitative effects of such treatments are known, only recently have we begun to understand the associated molecular mechanisms. The primary molecular processes involve short-lived species. The pur pose of this Advanced Study Institute was to review some newer experi mental techniques for the study of such species, the application of these techniques to biological and medical systems and to examine the value of such information in phototherapeutic situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not always the case that the subject of a scientific book and its relevance to everyday li fe are so timely. Photobiology and its si ster subject Radiobiology are now a must for understanding the environment we live in and the impact light, ultraviolet light, and radiation have on all aspects of our life. Photobiology is a true interdisciplinary field. Photobiology research plays a direct role in diverse fields, and a glance at the topics of the symposia covered in this book by over 100 articles shows the breadth and depth of knowledge acquired in fundamental research and its impact on the major issues and applied problems the world is facing. Half a century of photobiology research brought about an understanding of the importance of light to life, both as a necessary source of energy and growth as weIl as its possible dangers. Research in photochemistry and photobiology led to the discoveries of ceIlular repair mechanisms of UV induced damages to DNA and this led to understanding of the effects of hazardous environmental chemieals and mutagenecity , and to the development of genetic engineering. This topic was given due emphasis in several symposia and chapters in this book.

Book Benzodiazepines

    Book Details:
  • Author : H. Schütz
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642684262
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Benzodiazepines written by H. Schütz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To comment at length on the importance of the benzodiazepines seems superfluous within the scope of this preface. No other class of active substances has experienced an even approximately compa rable advance in the past two decades. It is therefore not surprising that the formerly dominant barbiturates and bromocarbamides have had to give way in many fields to the benzodiazepines, which now rank first (Proudfoot and Park [1828]). Closely linked with the great therapeutic importance of the benzodia zepines are analytical problems. Detection and the determination of blood levels can be necessary under therapeutic aspects, for instance in working out optimally effective levels in the treatment of epileptic conditions ("drug monitoring"), but also in connection with questions at issue in toxicology and traffic medicine. A toxicological analysis can be subdivided into the following steps: Detection (identification including screening) Determination (e. g. blood, plasma or serum levels) Interpretation of the analytical results. This book is intended as a contribution to each of these chapters: The part "Analytical Data" (pp.I-122) gives a comprehensive collec tion of data, e.g. general and chromatographic data (TLC, GLC) as well as spectra (UV, IR, MS) of 19 commercial preparations, 23 important metabolites and 18 hydrolysis derivatives. Information about biotransformation and the possible formation of aminobenzo phenone derivatives is also given. The most important analytical methods are presented in an extensive review on pp.123-204 in order to make it possible to select the optimum method on the basis of the essential data.

  • Author : Ron H. Douglas
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461307090
  • Pages : 446 pages

Download or read book Light in Biology and Medicine written by Ron H. Douglas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all life depends on light for its survival. It is the ultimate basis for the food we eat (photosynthesis), and many organisms make use of it in basic sensory mechanisms for guiding their behaviour, be it through the complex process of vision, or by the relatively more simple photosens itivity of microorganis~urthermore, light has profound implications for the field of medicine, both as a cause of disease (ie UV damage of DNA), and as a therapeutic agent (ie photodynamic therapy). These and other processes are the basis for the science of photobiolog~ which could be defined as the study of the effects of (visible and ultraviolet) light (from both the sun and artificial sources) on living matter. By its very nature, therefore, it is a multidisciplinary science involving branches of biology, chemistry, physics and medicine. This book contains a selection of papers which have been chosen to highlight recent advances in the various disciplines that make up photo biology. Although no book on photobiology can hope to be comprehensive, we hope that this volume includes a representative sample of much of what is new in the field. It is, however, inevitable that some areas will be better represented than others reflecting the biases of conference org anisers and editors.

Book Advances in Molecular Toxicology

Download or read book Advances in Molecular Toxicology written by Claude Reiss and published by VSP. This book was released on 1998-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular toxicology is on the way to setting a new standard in toxic risk assessment, with the powerful help of concepts and methods developed in the fields of molecular and cellular biology. The methods of molecular toxicology are endowed with qualities not always secured in more traditional approaches to toxicity assessment. These methods are easily standardized, reliable, reproducible and require only tiny amounts of the xenobiotic. They are much simpler, faster and less costly than current tests on animals and can be implemented with modest laboratory resources. This volume of Advances in Molecular Toxicology represents a collection of invited papers presented at the First European Workshop on Molecular Toxicology in Sophia Antipolis, France, The book covers 8 selected topics in molecular toxicology. The first two are devoted to ''physics'', dealing respectively with advanced instrumentation enabling location and quantification of xenobiotics in cells and organs with ultimate precision, and computer-assisted assessment of risk (QSAR). A comprehensive and up-to-date survey of molecular toxicology in the pharmaceutical industry is contributed by a pioneer in this field. The third section addresses the effect of xenobiotics on cell-cycle actors. Sections 4--6 deal with molecular toxicology in skin, kidney, nerve, liver and pancreatic cells. The last two sections describe methods to probe DNA damage and repair, and immunotoxicity.
