Book excerpt: Deep-band K produced higher corn yields than other placements, even in high testing soils where no response was expected. There was no significant relationship between increases in early growth and greater grain yield for both crops. Stratification was largely reduced when deep-band P was applied but placement of K fertilizer did not reduce levels of stratification. In conclusion, early growth of both crops were greater in chisel till then for no-till. Chisel till usually produced greater corn grain yield than no-till while tillage seldom affected soybean yield. Grain yield of both crops benefited from P or K fertilizer applications. Planter-band P was effective for increasing early growth of corn and soybean. Deep-banded K increased corn grain yield when compared to other placements even in some high testing soils.

Book excerpt: This study evaluated the grain yield, P or K uptake, and early dry weight responses of no-tilled and ridge tilled soybeans [Glicine max (L.) Merr.] and ridge tilled corn (Zea mays L.) to broadcast, deep-band, and planter-band P and K fertilizer placements under Iowa soil and weather conditions. Long-term P and K trials were established in 1994 at five research centers and were evaluated for four years. Forty short-term P-K trials were established in farmers' fields from 1995 to 1997. Treatments were various P (O to 56 kg P ha−1) and K (O to 132 kg K ha−1) rates broadcast, banded with the planter 5 cm beside and below the seeds, and deep-banded at a 15-20 cm depth before planting. Plant samples were taken at V5 to V6 growth stages, dried, weighed, ground, and analyzed for total P and K content. Soil samples were taken from different depth and position relative to crop rows or fertilizer bands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corn (Zea mays) response to fertilization and placement methods has been studied extensively; however studies on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] response to placement have been limited. Three studies were completed to evaluate different aspects of crop response. The objective of the first study was to evaluate the effect of starter and broadcast fertilizer application on corn and soybean, in a typical corn-soybean rotation in Kansas. Treatments were unfertilized control, starter (N, P and K), broadcast P and K using mono ammonium phosphate (MAP) and potassium chloride (KCl) and the combination of starter and broadcast. Corn and soybean yield generally was not affected by starter and broadcast treatments. Thus fertilization may be recommended only under specific conditions. The objectives of the second study were (i) to evaluate the effect of residual and direct fertilization on soybeans after corn under a corn-soybean rotation system, and (ii) study the effect of fertilizer P and K application on soil test P (STP) and soil test K (STK) changes over time. Direct fertilization increased soybean yield while residual fertilizer did not. Therefore maintenance rates may be effective to improve soybean yield and likely maintain STP and STK levels. Application of P and K fertilizer generated significant increases in STP and STK after one year of application. The rate of P and K fertilizer required to increase 1 mg kg−1 yr−1 was between 2.8 - 5.1 kg ha−1 for P and between 1.0- 2.5 kg ha−1 for K, respectively. The objective of the third study evaluate both corn and soybean response to direct P fertilization including starter and broadcast. The treatments were a control, two starter fertilizers (with N-P and N only), five P rates (9.8, 19.6, 29.3, 39.1, 48.9 kg P ha−1) and one treatment with starter fertilizer in addition to the broadcast fertilizer application. Corn grain yield was not significantly affected by any broadcast or starter treatments. Broadcast application rates significantly increased soybean yield on low STP levels. Results of this study show that large corn or soybean yield response to starter and broadcast P application are likely with low STP levels.

Book excerpt: The appropriate management for phosphorus (P) fertilizer can have significant agronomic, economic, as well as environmental impact. Studies in Kansas have evaluated different management systems to determine best management practices (BMP). The first component of this dissertation is a comprehensive review of tillage system and P fertilizer placement interaction. This review included studies completed in the U.S. Midwest. Results of this review showed greater corn yields with conventional tillage and broadcast applications when soil test P levels (STP) were below 20 mg P kg−1. However, soybean yield was highest in no-till systems with broadcast P fertilizer applications. The second component if this dissertation was a long-term study conducted in Kansas to evaluate the effect of P fertilizer placement on corn and soybean production. Results showed that under strip-tillage, P fertilizer placement significantly affected corn growth, but, seldom resulted in yield response difference among placement methods. Phosphorus application as starter fertilizer at planting showed the most consistent yield response. In addition to the agronomic aspect of this study, the third component of this dissertation consisted of an economic analysis using partial budgets calculated using both fixed and varying prices and costs to compare management practices. With decreased application costs associated with deep banding in strip-tillage system, net returns are greater than broadcast applications. The highest net responses were observed with starter P fertilizer applications. The fourth component of this dissertation included a study evaluating the effects of chelated fertilizer on nutrients, such as P, Fe, Mn, and Zn in soybean. Results from our study showed that both ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)+P and hydroxyethyl ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (HEDTA)+P resulted in greater concentrations and uptake of Fe and lower Mn uptake in soybean. However, the application of glucoheptonate (GCH)+P had no negative effect on Mn uptake compared to EDTA+P and HEDTA+P. Across locations, EDTA+P and HEDTA+P showed higher yield than GCH+P. The use of long-term studies and comprehensive reviews can provide a unique perspective and better understanding of the most appropriate BMPs for P fertilizer management. Many agronomic and environmental implications of P fertilizer management and the interactions with tillage systems and soils may only become noticeable after multiple years or in a variety of conditions.
