Phosphorus 2000 gives a unique coverage of the whole field of phosphorus chemistry and endeavours to summarise the subject at the start of the twenty-first century. Phosphorus chemistry is very wide ranging, reaching into many other branches of science including biochemistry and numerous industrial technologies. The present book has been adapted from the fifth edition of Phosphorus: An Outline of its Chemistry, Biochemistry & Technology (1995), to which corrections, major rearrangements of text, and many additions have been made.Phosphorus chemistry is treated here as a major branch of science in its own right - displacing the outmoded and frequently inappropriate concepts of 'organic' and 'inorganic' branches of chemistry which have been inherited from earlier centuries. Fundamental aspects are covered, a broad survey is carried out, and some of the very recent advances are also included. Adequate coverage of the simp

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present to our readers the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Phosphate. A short account of the history of the effort led to the Phosphate Workshops is appro priate and can be of interest to the reader. The idea for Phosphate Workshops was born in the early days of November, 1974. One of us (S. G. M. ) suggested the thought to a group of scientists gathered for a luncheon in one of the attrac tive small restaurants in Weisbaden, Germany. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together interested scientists to discuss the newer developments and the recent advances in the field of phosphate metabolism and the other related minerals. An Organizing Committee made of Shaul G. Massry (USA), Louis V. Avioli (USA), Philippe Bordier (France), Herbert Fleisch (Switzerland), and Eduardo Slatopolsky (USA) was formed. The First Workshop was held in Paris during June 5-6, 1975 and was hosted by Dr. Philippe Bordier. Its proceeding was already published. The Second Workshop took place in Heidelberg during June 28-30, 1976 and was hosted by Dr. Eberhard Ritz. Both of these workshops were extremely successful scientific endeavors, and the need for them was demonstrated by the great interest they generated among the scientific community. The Or ganizing Committee, therefore, decided to continue with the tradi tion to hold additional Workshops annually or every other year.

Download or read book Dietary Phosphorus written by Jaime Uribarri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phosphorus is an essential nutrient that occurs in almost all foods and is important for many normal physiological functions. In a typical Western diet, it is not harmful, but does adversely affect tissues in the body when consumed in excess or deficiency. This book provides a comprehensive review of various aspects of phosphorus in relation to human nutritional needs. Sections cover phosphorus nutrition and dietary issues; health risks associated with excess phosphorus intake that exceeds requirements; phosphorus intake in populations at risk; regulatory challenges and policy approaches; and environmental impacts of phosphates in the modern food supply. This book challenges the long held ideas that high dietary phosphorus intake beyond nutritional requirements is safe and the natural supply of phosphorus critical to agricultural and human food production is endless. Controversy surrounds the claim that largely unrestricted use of phosphorus in all aspects of food production from farm to fork increases dietary phosphorus intake and irretrievable environmental loss, both of which harm human and environmental health. The book editors have joined together experts in basic, medical, environmental, nutritional, and food science to explore the validity of these claims of harm from high intakes and the unchecked use of phosphorus in the global food supply. Despite the essential need for adequate phosphorus over all stages of plant, animal and human life, the growing evidence points to a worldwide increase in dietary phosphorus intake far beyond nutrient requirements, significant association with chronic disease risk even when renal function is not compromised, and the increase in environmental loss with crop run-off, animal husbandry, and unretrieved phosphorus from human waste. This current evidence alludes to a depleted, unsustainable natural supply of phosphorus, hazardous environmental pollution of lakes and waterways, and significant increases in the risk of kidney, skeletal, and other serious illnesses in humans in the future if action is not taken now.

Book Phosphorus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jim Elser
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-12-08
  • ISBN : 0199916926
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Phosphorus written by Jim Elser and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phosphorus is essential to the production of our food, and it also triggers algal blooms in lakes, rivers, and oceans when it slips through our hands. An understanding of this essential resource and how we have used and misused it over the years is crucial to the sustainability of our well-being on our planet. In this book, world authorities on phosphorus sustainability Jim Elser and Phil Haygarth explain this element's involvement in biology, human health and nutrition, food production, ecosystem function, and environmental sustainability. Phosphorus chronicles the sustainability challenges phosphorus both poses and solves in various contexts. The book begins with its discovery over 350 years ago, moving to its basic chemistry and the essential role it plays in all living things on Earth. Chapters go on to explain the rise in the usage of phosphorus in agriculture and how the increase in the mining of rock phosphate in the mid-20th century was essential for the Green Revolution. However, phosphorus emissions from human wastes and detergents triggered widespread algal blooms in the 1960s and 1970s. While such emissions have been brought under better control with wastewater treatment, diffuse emissions from farming continue to cause water quality degradation. The authors explain how these diffuse phosphorus emissions may worsen with climate change. In ten concise chapters, Elser and Haygarth offer engaging explanations of our historical use and abuse of phosphorus, including the phosphorus sustainability movement and new efforts to sustain food benefits of limited rock reserves following the phosphate rock price shock in 2007-2008. Highlighting new approaches for phosphorus, the two "Systems Innovators" turn toward the emerging set of sustainable phosphorus solutions necessary to achieve a sustainable "phosphoheaven" and avoid "phosphogeddon." The book provides an insider's take on this essential resource and why all of us need to wrestle with the wicked problems this element will cause, illuminate, or eliminate in years to come.
