Book excerpt: The potassium solubilizing microorganisms (KSMs) are a rhizospheric microorganism which solubilizes the insoluble potassium (K) to soluble forms of K for plant growth and yield. K-solubilization is carried out by a large number of saprophytic bacteria (Bacillus mucilaginosus, B. edaphicus, B. circulans, Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans, Paenibacillus spp.) and fungal strains (Aspergillus spp. and Aspergillus terreus). Major amounts of K containing minerals (muscovite, orthoclase, biotite, feldspar, illite, mica) are present in the soil as a fixed form which is not directly taken up by the plant. Nowadays most of the farmers use injudicious application of chemical fertilizers for achieving maximum productivity. However, the KSMs are most important microorganisms for solubilizing fixed form of K in soil system. The KSMs are an indigenous rhizospheric microorganism which show effective interaction between soil-plant systems. The main mechanism of KSMs is acidolysis, chelation, exchange reactions, complexolysis and production of organic acid. According to the literature, currently negligible use of potassium fertilizer as chemical form has been recorded in agriculture for enhancing crop yield. Most of the farmers use only nitrogen and phosphorus and not the K fertilizer due to unawareness that the problem of K deficiency occurs in rhizospheric soils. The K fertilizer is also costly as compared to other chemical fertilizers.

Most developing countries economic stability depends on agricultural yield, hence to feed rapidly increasing population excessive use of chemical fertilizers is there. As a solution PSM are employed that renders inorganic phosphorus to be available to plants in soluble form and mineralize organic phosphorus, (eco friendly) limiting the use of fertilizers. The solubilization of phosphatic compounds by naturally abundant PSM is studied under in vitro conditions. We have collected soil samples from different agricultural crops growing near by our campus processed all the samples for microbiological analysis within 24 hours. We have isolated large number of phosphate solublising colonies selected efficient phosphate solubilizers with high solubilization index for futher analysis and scaled down to few good phosphate solubilizers with high phosphatase activity. A nursery experiment was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of these strains in improving the growth and phosphorus level in maize seedlings. This review presents utilization of PSM with a view to foster sustainable agriculture.

Concern over disturbance to the microbial diversity and consequently soil fertility (as these microbes are involved in biogeochemical processes), as well as economic constraints, have prompted fun- mental and applied research to look for new agro-biotechnologies that can ensure competitive yields by providing suf?ciently not only essential nutrients to the plants but also help to protect the health of soils by mitigating the toxic effects of certain pollutants. In this regard, the role of naturally abundant yet functionally fully unexplored microorganisms such as biofertilizers assume a special signi?cance in the context of supplementing plant nutrients, cost and environmental impact under both conventional practices and derelict environments. Therefore, current devel- ments in sustainability involve a rational exploitation of soil microbial communities and the use of inexpensive, though less bio-available, sources of plant nutrients, which may be made available to plants by microbially-mediated processes.

The metabolites of organic acid by PSM usually dominate the insoluble phosphate dissolution and phosphorus transformation in soil. The tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) is the main metabolic pathway of organic acids secretion by PSM. Genetic, enzyme, and fermentation engineering technology can significantly affect the TCA pathway, changing the type and quantity of organic acid secretion, hence greatly affecting the application of PSM. In the case of fungi, the enhanced oxalic acid secretion is conducive to lead remediation, while food fermentation engineering needs more citric acid. In addition, the above biotechnology also greatly impacts other metabolites of PSMs, such as phosphatases, degrading enzymes and volatile organic compounds, etc. Therefore, promoting the capacity of metabolism via biotechnology is a current challenge for PSM in the pathway of application in food fermentation, environmental remediation, agricultural production, and biocontrol of plant pathogens.

It is one of the least available and the least mobile nutrient for the plants in the soil. Use of chemical fertilizer has led to health and environmental hazard. Many soil microorganisms (viz., bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi) have the ability to solubilize inorganic phosphatic compounds and make them available to growing plants. Phosphate solubilizing fungi (PSF) are superior to their bacterial and actinomycetes counterpart for P solubilzation both on precipitated agar and in liquid. These fungi can be used in replacement of chemical fertilizer. In the presented work 4 fungal strain were isolated from the semi arid region of Rajasthan, India that have the great potential to be used in replacement of chemical fertilizer. Selected strains were immobilized on agar and Ca-alginate and their effect were studied in both fermentation and soil plant conditions.
