Book Phonon Assisted Laser Transitions and Energy Transfer in Rare Earth Laser Crystals

Download or read book Phonon Assisted Laser Transitions and Energy Transfer in Rare Earth Laser Crystals written by Hans Petter Jenssen and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive study of energy transfer and phonon interaction in rare earth doped LiYF4 has been conducted. The trivalent rare earth ions Pr, Nd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb were used as the optically active ions. Y2Ti2O7, also doped with rare earth ions, was examined. A new technique for investigating energy transfer was used. Crystals with high enough concentration of sensitizer and activator ions to assure near neighbor pairs were used to measure transfer rates as a function of energy gap. An exponential dependence on energy gap was found. Efficient transfer was also observed in Y2Ti2O7, which has inversion symmetry at the rare earth site and therefore no allowed electric dipole transitions. (Author).

Book Laser Spectroscopy of Solids

Download or read book Laser Spectroscopy of Solids written by W. M. Yen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume we have attempted to present a concise survey of the spectroscopic properties of insulators as derived from the application of tunable laser spectro scopic techniques. As has been the case in gaseous atomic spectroscopy, the use of tunable lasers has allowed the extension and the refmement of optical measure ments in the condensed phases to unprecedented resolutions in the frequency and temporal domains. In turn, this firmer base of empirical fmdings has led to a more sophisticated theoretical understanding of the spectroscopy of optically excited states with major modifications being apparent in the area of their dynamic be havior. Yet the revivalistic nature of these advances implies that additional advan ces are to be expected as the techniques and developments outlined in this volume are put to widespread use. Regardless, it is our hope and that of our distinguished colleagues in this venture that the reviews presented here will be useful to neo phytes and veterans to this field alike - to the former as a laissez-passer into solid-state spectroscopy, to the latter as a useful synopsis and reference of recent developments. We have also attempted to expose the reader to the concept that optically active materials, be they organic or inorganic, as universality would require, be have in a like manner and, though terminology may vary in detail, the outline and general features of all insulators remain constant.

Book Laser Demonstrations of Rare earth Ions in Low phonon Chloride and Sulfide Crystals

Download or read book Laser Demonstrations of Rare earth Ions in Low phonon Chloride and Sulfide Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser results are summarized for the low-phonon hosts KPb[sub 2]Cl[sub 5] and CaGa[sub 2]S[sub 4]. Radiative quantum efficiencies were determined in KPb[sub 2]Cl[sub 5]:Dy[sup 3+] directly from emission spectra in order to accurately determine its long-wavelength potential. The results indicate that room-temperature laser action should be possible to near 9[micro]m in this host.

Book Investigation of Radiative and Nonradiative Transitions in Laser Crystals

Download or read book Investigation of Radiative and Nonradiative Transitions in Laser Crystals written by Marvin J. Weber and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spontaneous emission probabilities for magnetic- and electric-dipole transitions from excited states of Pr(3+), Nd(3+), Tm(3+) in LaF3 and Pr(3+), Nd(3+), Eu(3+), Tm(3+) in Y2O3 are calculated using the treatment of Judd and Ofelt. Intermediate coupled states and empirical intensity parameters were used. The calculated radiative decay probabilities are compared with fluorescence lifetimes measured at low rare-concentrations, where ion pair relaxation is negligible, to predict quantum efficiencies and test the theory. The agreement between radiative and observed lifetimes is generally satisfactory for those low-lying excited states where unit quantum efficiency is expected; the agreement is less satisfactory for higher excited states. The approximations and limitations inherent in the approach, possible breakdown of the closure assumption, and effects of the neglect of crystal-field interactions are discussed. A decrease in quantum efficiency with decreasing importance of nonradiative decay by multiphonon emission. A general computational program to calculate energy level schemes, absorption and fluorescence intensities, and quantum efficiencies of rare-earth ions is outlined. Techniques for investigating fluorescence decays in the nanosecond time domain are described briefly. (Author).

Book Lasers and Excited States of Rare Earths

Download or read book Lasers and Excited States of Rare Earths written by Renata Reisfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of stimulated light emission was discussed by Einstein in 1917, eight years before the quantum-mechanical description of energy levels of many-electron systems. Though it is imperative to use samples having optical properties greatly different from the stan dard continuous spectrum of opaque objects ("black body" radia tion) it is not always necessary to restrict the study to monatomic entities. Thus, spectral lines can be obtained (in absorption and in emission) from lanthanide compounds, containing from one to thir teen 4f electrons going from trivalent cerium to ytterbium, that are nearly as sharp as the ones from gaseous atoms. However, the presence of adjacent atoms modifies the simple picture of an isolated electron configuration, and in particular, it is possible to pump excited levels efficiently by energy transfer from species with intense absorption bands, such as the inter-shell transitions of other lanthanides and of thallium(I), lead(II) and bismuth(III) or the electron transfer bands of the uranyl ion or other complexes. On the other hand, it is possible to diminuish the mUlti-phonon relaxation (competing with sharp line luminescence) by selecting vitreous or crystalline materials with low phonon energies. Obviously, one cannot circumvent the conservation of energy by lasers, but they may have unprecedented consequences for the future by allowing nuclear fusion of light elements, effects of non-linear optics and time-resolved spectroscopy, besides the more conventional applications of coherent light beams with negligible angular extension.
