Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cuneiform Inscriptions and the Old Testament, Vol. 2: Translated From the Second Enlarged German Edition I have once more the pleasure of acknowledging the ever ready and helpful kindness Of Prof. Schrader in pre paring this volume for the press. The English edition is enriched by his own recent brilliant combinations on the field Of early Babylonian History whereby he arrives at the identification of the Biblical Amraphel with king Hammu rabi. A translation of an important Excursus in his own monograph, read before the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin, will be found in the Notes and Addenda at the close of this volume. Dr. Schrader has moreover added valuable Appendices on Assyriological literature as well as On the Moods and Tenses of the Assyrian verb. This edition also owes much to Mr. Pinches of the British Museum whose great erudition and ready command of cuneiform literature are at the service Of every inquirer. My indebtedness to him has been duly notified in each case. A word of grateful acknowledgment is due for the kindly welcome accorded to the first volume. Among the nume rous friendly notices I would especially mention the long and able review signed 'e', which appeared in the 'expositor' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books' is the second volume in IVP's Old Testament dictionary series. This volume picks up where the 'Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentateuch' left off - with Joshua and Israel poised to enter the land - and carries us through the postexilic period. Following in the tradition of the four award-winning IVP dictionaries focused on the New Testament, this encyclopedic work is characterized by in-depth articles focused on key topics, many of them written by noted experts. The history of Israel forms the skeletal structure of the Old Testament. Understanding this history and the biblical books that trace it is essential to comprehending the Bible. The 'Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books' is the only reference book focused exclusively on these biblical books and the history of Israel.

Book Blessing and Curse in Syro Palestinian Inscriptions of the Iron Age

Download or read book Blessing and Curse in Syro Palestinian Inscriptions of the Iron Age written by Timothy G. Crawford and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blessing and Curse in Syro-Palestinian Inscriptions of the Iron Age is an examination of blessings and / or curses in all published alphabetic inscriptions from Iron II (1000-586 B.C.E.) Syria-Palestine. Inscriptions having either blessing, curse, or both (in general or specific forms) have been collected and sorted according to the presence therein of deity names. Those inscriptions which call upon Yahweh, God of Israel, for blessing or curse have been separated from those which call upon other deities and from those which did not contain a deity name. The blessings and curses in these inscriptions have then been compared and contrasted both to each other and the Hebrew Bible in order to show what the various peoples of that area and time meant by blessing and curse and how they expressed these ideas.
