During his presidency, Rutgers expanded from a student body of 18,000 to 30,000, the budget grew from $18 million to $68 million, an enormous construction program enhanced and enlarged the campuses at Newark, New Brunswick, and Camden, and new professional schools were founded. In effect, Gross presided over the transformation of Rutgers from a private university rooted in the colonial past to one of the largest state universities in the post-industrial present. Yet, Gross was a relaxed and much admired leader whose tenure spawned excellence in research coupled with civility in relations among students, faculty and administrators. The speeches of Mason W. Gross are of more than ordinary interest and merit for two reasons. One is that he wrote them all himself. Woodrow Wilson was the last president of the United States who had no speechwriter. While this is less frequently characteristic of college presidents, it is a growing phenomenon. The second reason for the unique quality of his speeches is that Gross was essentially a teacher and student of philosophy. He was only incidentally an administrator, a title he disliked as being akin to 'bureaucrat.' The addresses selected for this volume were culled from some three hundred that were delivered between 1949 and 1971. The speeches were chosen to reflect diverse themes and occasions. Their subjects range from ideas on education to thoughts about urban planning, and the occasions from commencement addresses to appearances before national organizations. Effortlessly urbane and civilized, always gracious and courteous, Mason W. Gross was a teacher and philosopher, a democrat and an aristocrat. In his new introduction, Irving Louis Horowitz, traces the philosophical sources of Mason Gross' thought as well as his practical implementation of those influences. Richard P. McCormick, was professor of history at Rutgers University from 1948 to 1982. He is the author of The Presidential Game: The Origins of American Presidential Politics and The Second American Party System: Party Formation in the Jacksonian Era. Richard Schlatter, now deceased, was professor of history at Rutgers University, and served as provost of the university under Mason Gross. Irving Louis Horowitz is Hannah Arendt Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Political Science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and chairman and editorial director of Transaction Publishers. With information gleaned from archives in each of these places, John Connelly offers a valuable case study showing how totalitarian states adapt their policies to the contours of the societies they rule. The Communist dictum that universities be purged of "bourgeois elements" was accomplished most fully in East Germany, where more and more students came from worker and peasant backgrounds. But the Polish Party kept potentially disloyal professors on the job in the futile hope that they would train a new intelligentsia, and Czech stalinists failed to make worker and peasant students a majority at Czech universities. Connelly accounts for these differences by exploring the prestalinist heritage of these countries, and particularly their experiences in World War II. The failure of Polish and Czech leaders to transform their universities became particularly evident during the crises of 1968 and 1989, when university students spearheaded reform movements. In East Germany, by contrast, universities remained true to the state to the end, and students were notably absent from the revolution of 1989.

Book excerpt: One can often encounter an opinion that Polish scientific (or analytic) philosophy (or the Lvov-Warsaw School) deserves to be much better known than actually is. This book is thought as a response to such a claim. The papers collected in this volume are divided into two parts: Background and Influence and History and Systematics. However, there is no sharp borderline between themes which are touched in both parts. Generally speaking, all papers of the first part relate the Lvov-Warsaw School to some philosophical movements (Brentanism, phenomenology and Marxism) external to it whereas the papers collected in the second one focus on internal issues connected with the school (only Roberto Poli takes into account Brentano's views in his discussion of reism). Since the Polish school of mathematical logic is much better known than the Polish analytic philosophy we decided to omit here any treatment of the former. Thus, this collection centers on purely philosophical matters. We projected this volume not as an exhaustive panorama of Polish analytic philosophy but rather as a series of essays on particular persons or topic. As a result one can find here papers on Twardowski. Ajdukiewicz, Kotarbinski, Tarski and Lukasiewicz as well as on ethics on science, nominalism, and the methodology of psychology. We hope that this book will contribute to a better knowledge and evaluation of Polish achievements in analytic philosophy. We would like to express our gratitude to Professor Leszek Nowak, the editor-in-chief of Poznan Studies in the Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities, who initiated the idea of the collection and helped in its preparation.

Book excerpt: We often have reason to doubt our own ability to form rational beliefs, or to doubt that some particular belief of ours is rational. Perhaps we learn that a trusted friend disagrees with us about what our shared evidence supports. Or perhaps we learn that our beliefs have been afflicted bymotivated reasoning or by other cognitive biases. These are examples of higher-order evidence. While it may seem plausible that higher-order evidence should somehow impact our beliefs, it is less clear how and why. Normally, when evidence impacts our beliefs, it does so by virtue of speaking for oragainst the truth of theirs contents. But higher-order evidence does not directly concern the contents of the beliefs that they impact. In recent years, philosophers have become increasingly aware of the need to understand the nature and normative role of higher-order evidence. This is partly due tothe pervasiveness of higher-order evidence in human life, for example in the form of disagreement. But is has also become clear that higher-order evidence lies at the heart of a number of central epistemological debates, spanning from classical disputes between internalists and externalists to morerecent discussions of peer disagreement and epistemic akrasia. Many of the controversies within these and other debates stem, at least in part, from conflicting views about the normative significance of higher-order evidence.This volume brings together, for the first time, a distinguished group of leading and up-and-coming epistemologists to explore a wide range of interrelated issues about higher-order evidence.

A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
