Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tracing the development of Indian philosophy as a single tradition of thought, these two volumes provide a classical exposition of Indian thought. The author showcases ancient philosophical texts and relates them to contemporary issues of philosophy and religion. He presents the essential meaning and significance of individual texts and philosophies and also draws parallels between Indian and western philosophical traditions. The first volume covers the Vedic and Epic periods, including expositions on the hymns of the Rig-Veda, the Upanishads, Jainism, Buddhism, and the theism of the Bhagvadgita. The second investigates the six Brahmanical philosophical systems, the theism of Ramanuja, Saiva ethics, metaphysicas and literature, and the theism of the later Vaishnavas." "This second edition, with a new Introduction by eminent philosopher, J.N. Mohanty, underlines the continuing relevance of the two volumes and the philosophic tradition they represent. Lucidly written, these books will form essential reading for students, teachers, scholars of Indian philosophy as well as general reader interested in the development and growth of Indian thought."--Jacket.

Book Primal Spirituality of the Vedas

Download or read book Primal Spirituality of the Vedas written by R. Balasubramanian and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The primal spirituality of the Vedic tradition, which is the subject dealt with in this volume, contains the central ideas of the philosophia perennis-the One as the source and support of the many, the spirituality of matter, and the divinity of all living beings. Its outlook is holistic as it integrates beings with the primal Being. It has a long history of five millennia spanning pre-axial, axial, and modern periods. It has been renewed from time to time through a series of renaissance-first through the Upanisads, again through the epics and the bhakti movement, and then through the modern renaissance leaders. Hence, it is vibrant in spite of its age, modern in spite of its antiquity. Swami Vivekananda, Ramana Maharsi and Jagadguru Candrasekharendra Sarasvati are some of the exemplars of the primal spirituality.

Book The Essentials of Indian Philosophy

Download or read book The Essentials of Indian Philosophy written by M. Hiriyanna and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is a simpler and shorter account of the authors previously published Outline of Indian Philosophy. Therefore, in accordance with the aim kept in view in writing, it leaves out many of the details included in the previous one. The difference between them, however, does not consist merely in these omissions: There is also variation in the treatment of some topics, as, for instance, in the first two chapters dealing with early Indian thought. At least in two cases, again, there are important additions. In the earlier book, Buddhism was dealt with in reference to two stages of its growth. There is a third phase, representing the doctrine as it was originally taught by Buddha; and a brief resume of it, as it has been reconstructed by scholars in recent years, also finds a place here. Similarly, the account of the Vedanta has been amplified by the inclusion of the Dvaita system. In treating such a subject as Indian Philosophy, it is difficult to avoid the use of Sanskrit terms; but their number appearing in the body of the work has been reduced as far as possible, and a Glossary is provided to help the reader in finding out their meanings readily. It provides a concise, connected account of Indian philosophy, and interpretation and criticism are provided within the limits of the volume. The Essentials of Indian Philosophy provides a concise, connected account of Indian philosophy, and interpretation and criticism are provided within the limits of the volume. An introductory chapter summarises Vedic religion and philosophy, and then Indian thought respectively with the early post-Vedic period and the age of the systems. A brief historical survey accompanies each natural division of the subject, in addition to an exposition of its theory of knowledge, ontology and practical teaching. A glossary of Sanskrit terms and a good subject index are provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is really gratifying to note that the culture developed on the basis of the Vedas has evolved into a massive reservoir of humanistic culture. The term Veda signifies the deep repository of knowledge handed down from generation to generation since time immemorial. These Vedas stood not only the test of scrutiny by the knowledgeable authorities but also of time. Despite all political conquests, economic upheavals, social transformations and cultural deviations, the Vedas have survived hitherto because of the humanistic culture engendered by them. References can be made in this connection to A.L. Bhasam’s book The wonder that was India and R.T.H. Griffith’s RigVeda (The oldest divine book). The Vedas are quite distinct from other religious literature in terms of concepts, structure, content and application. The Arya Samaj has always insisted on treating the Vedas as a philosophical and divine matter. European philosophers and scholars are greatly in acceptance of the Vedas too and hold the same in high esteem Celebrated western scholars such as Max Muller, Oldenberg, Wilson, Griffith etc. tried to delve into the vast expanse of the religious-cultural endowment of the Vedas.

Book Eastern Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Eastern Philosophy of Religion written by Victoria S. Harrison and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element selectively examines a range of ideas and arguments drawn from the philosophical traditions of South and East Asia, focusing on those that are especially relevant to the philosophy of religion. The Element introduces key debates about the self and the nature of reality that unite the otherwise highly diverse philosophies of Indian and Chinese Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. The emphasis of this Element is analytical rather than historical. Key issues are explained in a clear, precise, accessible manner, and with a view to their contemporary relevance to ongoing philosophical debates.
