Book Love s Knowledge

Download or read book Love s Knowledge written by Martha C. Nussbaum and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together Nussbaum's published papers on the relationship between literature and philosophy, especially moral philosophy. The papers, many of them previously inaccessible to non-specialist readers, deal with such fundamental issues as the relationship between style and content in the exploration of ethical issues; the nature of ethical attention and ethical knowledge and their relationship to written forms and styles; and the role of the emotions in deliberation and self-knowledge. Nussbaum investigates and defends a conception of ethical understanding which involves emotional as well as intellectual activity, and which gives a certain type of priority to the perception of particular people and situations rather than to abstract rules. She argues that this ethical conception cannot be completely and appropriately stated without turning to forms of writing usually considered literary rather than philosophical. It is consequently necessary to broaden our conception of moral philosophy in order to include these forms. Featuring two new essays and revised versions of several previously published essays, this collection attempts to articulate the relationship, within such a broader ethical inquiry, between literary and more abstractly theoretical elements.

Book Henry James and the Philosophical Novel

Download or read book Henry James and the Philosophical Novel written by Merle A. Williams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-04-08 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James and the Philosophical Novel breaks fresh ground by examining James's unique position as a philosophical novelist, closely associated with the climate of ideas generated by his brother William. It considers storytelling as a mode of philosophical enquiry, showing how a range of distinguished thinkers have relied on fictional narrative as a technique for formulating and clarifying their ideas; and investigates (with close reference to his novels) the affiliations between James's practice as a novelist and contemporary epistemological, moral, and linguistic concerns.

Book Philosophy of Henry James Sr

Download or read book Philosophy of Henry James Sr written by Frederic Harold Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy of Henry James, Sr. In writing this book as the first treatment of the senior James's philosophy in its entirety, I was guided by two purposes: first, to give quotations of all the key-passages from James's writings, which are extremely inaccessible to general readers, in order to allow James to speak for himself as much as possible; secondly, to render a systematic exposition of the entire range of the sources and products of his thought. As to the first, the reader may be certain that he will become acquainted here with every passage of prime importance in James's works. As to the second, the reader will find, in the accompanying exposition, a presentation of James's philosophy which, in its wholeness, constitutes a remarkably unified system; but this system in his thought-as-a-whole had to be discovered and articulated as such by the present writer. The task of exhibiting James's system as an interrelated totality was complicated by the fact that the literary unit of James's expression of his thought is not the sentence, nor the book-length, but rather the "essay" (or, "letter"), as one who consults the full titles of his works will readily discover; moreover, there are no indexes in any of his books. James's philosophic vision is one of imposing vitality and possesses a kind of architectural grandeur. This vision is garmented in the sinewy yet graceful English of a prose master. It is hoped that James, Sr., long eclipsed in fame by his sons William and Henry, may come now into his own as a recognized brilliant thinker and author in the epic of American thought and literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armstrong suggests that James's perspective is essentially phenomenological--that his understanding of the process of knowing, the art of fiction, and experience as a whole coincides in important ways with the ideas of the leading phenomenologists. He examines the connections between phenomenology's theory of consciousness and existentialism's analyses of the lived world in relation to James's fascination with consciousness and what is commonly called his Originally published in 1983. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy of Henry James: A Digest No attempt, so far as I am aware, has ever been made to present a collective view of the philosophy of Mr. Henry James, so as to bring it within the scope of the general reader. The distinguished philosopher himself, so lately gone from us, seems not to have aimed to give his whole thought anywhere in brief compass. The essential principles of it are in all the works which he has given to the press from time to time during the last thirty years, and there is a more or less complete statement of his views in each of the later volumes; yet a satisfactory insight into his ideas cannot well be obtained without bringing the whole of his writings under one survey.
