Book Philosophy and the Metaphysical Achievements of Education

Download or read book Philosophy and the Metaphysical Achievements of Education written by Ryan McInerney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the deep connections between philosophy and education, Ryan McInerney argues that we must use philosophy to reflect on the significance of educational practice to all human endeavour. He uses a broad approach which takes in the relationships governing philosophy, education, and language, to reveal education's fundamental achievements and metaphysical significance. The realization of educational ideals and policies are read alongside growing skepticism regarding the theoretical and practical significance of philosophical thinking, and the emphasis on resource efficiency and measurable outcomes which characterise schooling today. It is from this context that McInerney defends the value inherent to the philosophy of education. Drawing upon contemporary continental and analytic thinkers including Nietzsche, Gadamer, and Wittgenstein, McInerney charts the role of education in shaping the child's metaphysical transformation through language acquisition. Connecting early years and primary school education, McInerney pinpoints rationality as the crucial factor which produces critical, thinking beings. He presents the pursuit of philosophically minded education as a rational pursuit which enables us to philosophise and educate others in turn, dispensing with the epistemological and conceptual foundationalisms of the past.

There is an underlying principle running through the discussion which gives unity and coherence to the multiplied facts and. activities in education. A metaphysics of education grounds the facts and processes of education in a world principle and shows how this principle takes care of the practical problems of education. This text emphasizes the fact that there is an inner connection and an inner penetration of philosophic principles and educational facts. A comparative study is made of educational facts and basal concepts in education in order to test their philosophical significance and implications. Such facts as teaching, the school, the curriculum, educational aims, etc., are compared and related to mind, law, interaction, purpose, etc. These problems are studied inductively beginning with the concrete educational facts, deriving the fundamental conceptions in education and finally relating both facts and concepts to a universal principle which binds both together into a harmonious whole. Finally a critical study of the principal philosophical systems is made to ascertain what influence each system, atomism, rationalism, pragmatism, idealism, etc., has had on educational theory and practice. Our pedagogical literature is filled with metaphysical concepts and it is impossible to teach even one of the common branches without using philosophical principles. Systems of thought create systems of education; methods of thought determine methods of teaching. In fact our whole educational procedure is permeated and colored by philosophic thinking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite pervading all aspects of educational practice and theory, little scholarship focuses on time in education. This book addresses that lacuna questioning our assumptions about time and their ramifications on theories of learning, issues of equity and diversity, and on the purposes of education itself. The authors examine ideas about time in a wide variety of contexts, from ancient Greek fiction to 19th century theories of evolution and from 20th century indigenous stories to 20th century afro-futurist fiction. They show how pervasive the image of 'time as an arrow' has become, an image of time that is one-way, singular and teleological. Through exploring other theories of time, the authors propose alternatives for time in education. They argue that time is one of the key biopolitical tools we think and operate with, but rarely address as a historical, cultural and pedagogical category with which schools reproduce oppressive structures around race, class, and gender in society. The book draws on ideas from the arts and the sciences to illustrate and trouble assumptions of time drawing on artistic and theoretic work from Édouard Glissant, Henri Lefebvre, Giordano Nanni, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Bonnie Honig and others.

Book Making Sense of the World

Download or read book Making Sense of the World written by Neil Hooley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Sense of the World: Living, Learning and Teaching with Radical Philosophy of Education proposes that human knowledge arises from an integrated physical and metaphysical experience involving the continuing social acts of personal and community cultures and languages. It seeks to provide a means of thinking about and acting with the philosophical nature of human existence, so that the daily activities and achievements of all are respected and taken into account. Given the dominance of neoliberal politics and economics in many countries, it is unusual to find the work of educators and practitioners being framed generally by an explicit philosophy of knowledge.

Download or read book Modes of Learning written by George Allan and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-05-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators are familiar with Alfred North Whitehead's three stages of education: romance, precision, and generalization. Philosophers are familiar with his metaphysical theories about the primacy of temporal processes. In Modes of Learning, George Allan brings these two sides of Whitehead's thought together for the first time in a book suitable for both those initially approaching Whitehead's metaphysics and experts alike. Allan develops a series of analogies between Whitehead's ideas about how we learn and key concepts in his later metaphysical writings, demonstrating that both how we learn and how the world changes involve a tension between open-ended exploration and systematic organization. Novel ideas free us from the blinders imposed by old habits and beliefs. Yet only when these ideas are integrated with the old ways are we able to improve our individual and collective lives—until changing circumstances call for further new ideas and fresh integrations. Using a rich variety of examples, Allan illuminates the metaphysical ideas he explores by tethering them concretely to the educational practices in which they are rooted. This shows a key but neglected feature of Whitehead's thought: his pragmatic theory of truth, with its functionalist approach to experience and its humanistic appreciation of the frailty of all human endeavors.

Book Philosophy and History of Education

Download or read book Philosophy and History of Education written by Antoinette Errante and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies of philosophy and history of education are under siege. These studies do not attract large grant funds and, to many, do not seem useful, even while much of educational research is dismissed as inconsequential or self-evident and the crisis in American education deepens. Philosophy and history of education have therefore been pushed to the margin--or beyond--in colleges and schools of education, commensurate with the "decline of the humanities" in higher education generally. Philosophy and History of Education examines the complex relationship between these studies, and the value of these related studies for improving educational knowledge, policy, and practice. From diverse perspectives, the philosophers and historians in this volume explore how bringing these disciplines together yields insights about unacknowledged or occult aspects of education problems that neither could achieve on their own.
