Book The Philosophical Foundations of Management Thought

Download or read book The Philosophical Foundations of Management Thought written by Jean-Etienne Joullié and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book's premise is that the theories taught in management schools are based on unacknowledged philosophical perspectives that are significant not so much for what they explain, but for what they assume. Rarely made explicit, these perspectives cannot be reconciled, with the result that the study of management has been dominated by contradictions and internecine intellectual warfare. However, the ability critically to analyze these diverse perspectives is essential to practicing and aspiring managers if they are to evaluate expert opinion. Moreover, since management is primarily an exercise in communication, managing is impossible in the darkness of an imprecise language, in the absence of moral references, or in the senseless outline of a world without intellectual foundations. Managing is a prime example of applied philosophy.

Book The Philosophical Foundations of Management Thought

Download or read book The Philosophical Foundations of Management Thought written by Jean-Etienne Joullié and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a review of important Western philosophies and their significance for managers, management academics, and management consultants. Management theories taught in management schools that managers and consultants are supposed to apply are built upon different perspectives of the world, man, and society that are important not so much for what they lead to, but for what they assume. Although rarely made explicit, these assumptions cannot be reconciled and are at the source of many incompatibilities that management academia has been busy ignoring or obfuscating. The ability to evaluate critically these perspectives is essential to managers if they are to make sense of what experts profess, however. Moreover, since management is primarily an exercise in communication, managing is impossible in the darkness of an imprecise language, in the absence of moral references or in the senseless outline of a world without intellectual bases. Managing is an applied philosophical activity; any attempt at repairing management academia and the practices it has produced must accept this conclusion as its premise.

Book Developing Control Concepts in the Twentieth Century RLE Accounting

Download or read book Developing Control Concepts in the Twentieth Century RLE Accounting written by Lee D. Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the conceptual development of control in the literature of both management and accounting disciplines, from 1900 to 1980. In order to portray the development of control concepts over time, the chapters are organized into sections relating to the schools of thought from which they emanated and a model of control is constructed to represent each group of concepts and their hypothesised inter-relationships. Having traced the development of control models a comparative analysis of historical development in the two streams of management and accounting literature is undertaken. This analysis reveals a pronounced lag of accounting development behind that of management literature. The reasons for this are then discussed.

Book Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience

Download or read book Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience written by M. R. Bennett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of the seminal work in the field—revised, updated, and extended In Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience, M.R. Bennett and P.M.S. Hacker outline and address the conceptual confusions encountered in various neuroscientific and psychological theories. The result of a collaboration between an esteemed philosopher and a distinguished neuroscientist, this remarkable volume presents an interdisciplinary critique of many of the neuroscientific and psychological foundations of modern cognitive neuroscience. The authors point out conceptual entanglements in a broad range of major neuroscientific and psychological theories—including those of such neuroscientists as Blakemore, Crick, Damasio, Dehaene, Edelman, Gazzaniga, Kandel, Kosslyn, LeDoux, Libet, Penrose, Posner, Raichle and Tononi, as well as psychologists such as Baar, Frith, Glynn, Gregory, William James, Weiskrantz, and biologists such as Dawkins, Humphreys, and Young. Confusions arising from the work of philosophers such as Dennett, Chalmers, Churchland, Nagel and Searle are subjected to detailed criticism. These criticisms are complemented by constructive analyses of the major cognitive, cogitative, emotional and volitional attributes that lie at the heart of cognitive neuroscientific research. Now in its second edition, this groundbreaking work has been exhaustively revised and updated to address current issues and critiques. New discussions offer insight into functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the notions of information and representation, conflict monitoring and the executive, minimal states of consciousness, integrated information theory and global workspace theory. The authors also reply to criticisms of the fundamental arguments posed in the first edition, defending their conclusions regarding mereological fallacy, the necessity of distinguishing between empirical and conceptual questions, the mind-body problem, and more. Essential as both a comprehensive reference work and as an up-to-date critical review of cognitive neuroscience, this landmark volume: Provides a scientifically and philosophically informed survey of the conceptual problems in a wide variety of neuroscientific theories Offers a clear and accessible presentation of the subject, minimizing the use of complex philosophical and scientific jargon Discusses how the ways the brain relates to the mind affect the intelligibility of neuroscientific research Includes fresh insights on mind-body and mind-brain relations, and on the relation between the notion of person and human being Features more than 100 new pages and a wealth of additional diagrams, charts, and tables Continuing to challenge and educate readers like no other book on the subject, the second edition of Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience is required reading not only for neuroscientists, psychologists, and philosophers, but also for academics, researchers, and students involved in the study of the mind and consciousness.

Do you know that the heartbeat of your leader is associated with leadership failure? The leadership failure philosophical puzzles which are solved in the book, are detailed. LEADERSHIP SLEEPING FREQUENCY: At the deepest level of sleep, stage IV sleep, the predominant EEG activity consists of low frequency (1–4 Hz), high-amplitude fluctuations called delta waves, the characteristic slow waves for which this phase of sleep is named. The entire sequence from drowsiness to deep stage IV sleep usually takes about an hour. LEADERSHIP QUESTIONS: What is the sleep frequency of your political leaders? What is the heartbeat rate of your leader? This is an intellectual book that would add value to your knowledge. This book details the current philosophical situation of Nigerian governance. The Nigerian government has gone from a high level of awareness to a low level of awareness, then to controlled processes to automatic processes, and is now ruling Nigeria with daydreaming, which is referred to as the lower consciousness. LEADERSHIPS CONSCIOUSNESS: In neuroscience, daydreaming involves drifting off into a world of fantasy. Even if your leader is awake, he or she will have a reduced awareness of external stimuli. And this usually occurs while the leader is engaged in an automatic process where minimal attention is paid to the daily tasks of the leader while the citizens continue to complain. Is your authority on altered states of consciousness? What are the psychological terms for altered states of consciousness? Altered states of consciousness are characterized by a change in brain wave patterns. And when a leader experiences altered states of consciousness, there are significant changes to the way the leader experiences thoughts. Feelings and sensations are even more likely to experience the extremes of sensations and emotions while in an altered state of consciousness. Note: Altered states of consciousness may be occur naturally, such as sleeping. Or intentionally induced, like meditation. All these are psychological changes experienced as perceptual and cognitive distortions of failed leadership. Get your copy of the Intellect Book right now! Book Personality and Performance

Book excerpt: This book of psychology is written by two psychologists for managers and students of management. It consists of a two-pronged approach. First, it analyzes the work of psychologists who have adopted a scientific perspective. In management, this means treating people as predictable objects. Second, it offers an alternative to scientific psychology that treats people as purposive subjects. The purpose of this psychology is as a psychology of self-determination, to enable working people to gain insight into and mastery of themselves. To achieve this requires new foundations for managerial psychology based on purpose, choice, freedom, and responsibility. This book is an attempt to clarify certain ideas about managerial psychology and to suggest a new direction.
