Richmond, of Jefferson, Ohio, requesting me to embody the facts and reasons in support of the alleged Spiritual origin of the Manifestations, which he proposed to accompany with a critical review and numerous facts and observations of his own, and expressing a desire that the whole might be published in a volume of several hundred pages. Dr. Richmond's letters in the Tribune had previously attracted very general attention, and he was regarded, at that time, as the most formidable opponent to the Spiritual theory in this country. Indeed, the editor of the Tribune had expressed the opinion that he was the ablest man which the Spiritual phenomena had called into the field; and it was manifest to all, that he had at least the candor to acknowledge the facts, if he had not the ability to explain them, on his favorite hypothesis. All other opposing theories seemed childish or absurd, while the one suggested by my correspondent certainly demanded the most serious consideration. I had no wish to shun the proposed ordeal; but having to perform, in addition to numerous other duties, the entire editorial labor of a weekly paper and a monthly magazine, I was quite too much occupied to accept the proposition of Dr. Richmond, which, for these reasons, was respectfully declined. It is Spiritual Knowledge, reasoned out and corroborated by personal experience. Diogenes Laërtius traces Theosophy to an epoch antedating the dynasty of the Ptolemies. But, in fact, Theosophy is much older: It is the parent stem of Archaic Wisdom. The term was revived in the 3rd century AD by Ammonius Saccas, the Alexandrian Socrates of Neo-Platonism, teacher of Plotinus, and founder of the Eclectic Theosophical System. Briefly, Eclectic Theosophy asserts that: 1. Humanity is a periodic emanation from a single noetic essence and, 2. When by exertion and merit, a mortal soul activates its latent faculties and potencies, it can be re-connected with its immortal noetic origin and source. Hence, the Buddhistic, Vedantic, and Magian or Zoroastrian systems were taught in the Eclectic Theosophical School along with all the philosophies of Greece. It was Theosophy which prompted such men as Hegel, Fichte, and Spinoza, to take up the labours of the old Grecian philosophers and speculate upon the One Substance — the Deity, the Divine All, proceeding from Divine Wisdom. And it was Theosophy that made it possible for great thinkers such as Plotinus, Schelling, and Emerson, to reflect upon man’s divine ancestry. What Theosophy is and is not. By looking inwards at the noumenal worlds and causes, Theosophy is Esoteric Science, par excellence. Exact Science is only concerned with phenomenal worlds and effects. Esoteric Science corroborates Nature’s metaphysics and Divine Laws; Exact Science, Its physics and natural laws. In Its fruition, Theosophy is Inner Knowledge about the divinity of Cosmos and Man, and a noetic progression from the known and knowable, to the unknown and, otherwise, unknowable. And, as such, It lies at the root of every moral philosophy, religion, and science. Theosophy is the world’s tree of knowledge and sum total of all sciences. Sophia is the accumulated wisdom of Divine Beings from the beginning of time, who have willingly accepted the harshness and drudgery of sentient life to help their toiling brothers. Theosophy is not a religion. It is but an analytical science, the ally of every honest religion. Being the culmination and practical demonstration of the Truths underlying every creed, Theosophy is compatible with every religion. It believes in no miracle, whether divine or devilish, and cherishes no anthropomorphic concepts, whether gods or demons. Theosophy discriminates between finite animal man, and Infinite Divine Man, and differs from the Vedantin doctrines. It is not even “esoteric” religion! Every old religion is but a chapter or two of the entire volume of archaic primeval mysteries — Eastern Occultism alone being able to boast that it is in possession of the full secret, with its seven keys. In other words, Theosophy is Religion itself! Loyalty to Truth is Its creed, Brotherhood of all beings, not just men, Its noble aim. Theosophy is Inner Wisdom or Divine Knowledge. It is at the heart of all religions and philosophies from the earliest time to the present day, embracing all domains of mundane knowledge and human endeavour. Yet, It is a practical, and an ethical philosophy, ever transcending self-imposed boundaries to expand consciousness, and to dispel lingering doubts. In short, Theosophy is Supernal Philosophy, Wisdom’s True Love, not mere verbiage. It is a philosophy to live by. Metaphysically, Theosophy is the accumulated testimony and wisdom of the ages. Theosophy is not knowledge of a “God,” It is knowledge of gods, Celestial Knowledge: a shoreless ocean of Everlasting Truth, Love, and Impartiality, monistic through and through. By seeking the One Truth, its allied with the ideals of every seeker of Truth. To fully define Theosophy, we must consider it under all its aspects. By means of Its Golden Precepts, those who are intellectually and ethically fit might gain insights of the inner world of being. There, mystics can see past, present, and future as in a mirror. In complying, I exclude everything outside my psychic sensitiveness. That I was born in what was then a wilderness on the southern shores of Lake Erie (Ohio, U. S. A.), and for the early years of my life to the time I began to write for the superior intelligences had exceedingly limited social and educational advantages, may be of interest to the readers as showing how the communications transcended my own capabilities, and the education which came with its inspiration. No one can write of the vicissitudes, emotions, or thoughts of a medium as well as the medium himself. By the essential conditions of mediumship, he is sensitive and easily disturbed by antagonism. What to others would be a jest, to him becomes agonizing, and he is often disturbed by causes unknown by their subtlety. The voice of censure is unbearably harsh; a word of praise lifts his soul with unspeakable delight; he is a bundle of nerves, tense, sensitive to a breath, responding to a touch. These conditions are not of his seeking, but are thrust upon him, and he cannot cast them off. Like all human capabilities, sensitiveness is susceptible of culture, of intensification, and of being lost by neglect or abuse; of yielding unspeakable delight or pain. Hence, for the medium who has traversed this path- way to clearly present the conflicting impressions he experiences is difficult, but important data for the study of the phenomena may be thereby furnished. At an age when the mind is usually absorbed in sports my thoughts turned to the great questions of theology and religion. This I refer to the fact that my parents were Unitarians in a community of Trinitarians. Their house was the headquarters for the itinerant preachers, both orthodox and heterodox, who, on circuits, carried their doctrines into the wilderness, and the atmosphere was burdened with dogmatic disputations, based on the literal text of the Bible, for the “higher criticism” was then unknown and doctrinal sermons, hot with the fires of hell, and terrible threatenings of God's wrath met the popular demand. The result was that at an early age I became sceptical of the entire Church scheme. The gloom of doubt was cast over my young life. Annihilation was appalling, yet I saw no escape. They who professed to know the secrets, not only of life but of death, were in direct conflict on vital issues, and their light darkened understanding. Outside of their domain there was no assurance. Man physically dies like the animal. Death in both is accompanied by the same phenomena, and after death the chemistry of change resolves the substance of each to the same elements. Why should we suppose the one to be immortal and the other not? If immortality be doubted, all dependent dogmas share its fate. I was more infidel than Paine, for I doubted everything. The beginning of my doubts may be dated to an accident which befell me, and my application of the prayer test. I had been brought up to pray every night before retiring, as a duty which must not be neglected. When I was near ten years old I was set to spreading hay after the mowers, and was given a steel fork, because I was not strong enough to use a wooden one. In those days such a fork was a treasure, and I was strictly charged to be careful of it. All went well, and I kept near the gleaming scythes. Then I fell behind, further and further. Suddenly a snake darted over the swarthe. Filled with that hereditary hatred which has been instilled for countless generations against the serpent, I struck at it with the fork. I gave it no harm, but one tine of the fork snapped short, I was overwhelmed with fear. My father was stern and not inclined to "spare the rod," and I was hopeless....
