C'est là de même que se met en place et en forme, sous la plume notamment d'un Mignet, l'objet Révolution tel que nous continuons de le viser, tandis qu'avec Guizot la catégorie de civilisation acquiert son rôle régulateur d'une histoire ambitionnant la totalité. Qu'on reprenne enfin les textes inauguraux d'un Thierry et l'on pourra mesurer combien la fonction de l'idée de Nation déborde les limites d'un projet étroitement politique.La plupart de textes réunis ici n'ont pas été republiés depuis le siècle dernier. Il s'agit, en les rassemblant, de rappeler l'attention, avec les pièces mêmes du dossier, sur l'un des grands remaniements de la mémoire française.

I am in full ag, reement with certain ideas expounded in that book, although it also contains others that I must object to. I have decided to make some remarks about them at the beginning of my book, as I believe that they may prove useful by way of int, roduction to the English version of this volume. I hope that anyone who has professional reasons to turn his attention to this volume will have acquainted himself with Scientific Knowledge and Socio logical Theory before he proceeds any further. I fully share Barnes' view that it is possible and desirable to undertake descrtptive-sociological investigations of scientific research. The main subjeot of this research should be the na tural science, and, moreover, such findings in these sciences whose cognitive value has never been questioned by profession als. These investigations must avoid becoming entangled in epistemologtical controversies, and through epi:stemo}. ogy in, phi losophical controversies. They must not defend any of the contended theses and must not Hrterally, rely on evaluative pre mises that have been questicmed.

His demystifying approach to nationalist and Zionist historiography provoked much criticism from other professional historians, as well as praise. The furore gave him a privileged position to consider his academic discipline, which he reflects on here in Twilight of History. Drawing on four decades in the field, Sand takes a wider view and interrogates the study of history, whose origin lay in the need for a national ideology. Over the last few decades, traditional history has begun to fragment, yet only to give rise to a new role for historians as priests of official memory. Working in Israel has sharpened Sand’s perspective, since the role of history as national myth is particularly salient in a country where the Bible is treated as a source of historical fact. He asks such questions as: Is every historical narrative ideologically marked? Do political requirements and state power weigh down inordinately on historical research and teaching? And, in such conditions, can there be a morally neutral and “scientific” truth? Despite his trenchant criticism of academic history, Sand would still like to believe that the past can be understood without myth, and finds reasons for hope in the work of Max Weber and Georges Sorel.

The unifying theme is the nature of the philosophical problems surrounding the postulation of unobservable entities such as light waves, molecules, and electrons. How, if at all, is it possible to confirm scientific hypotheses about "unobservables"? Achinstein examines this question as it arose in actual scientific practice in three nineteenth-century episodes: the debate between particle and wave theorists of light, Maxwell's kinetic theory of gases, and J.J. Thomson's discovery of the electron. The book contains three parts, each devoted to one of these topics, beginning with an essay presenting the historical background of the episode and an introduction to the philosophical issues. There is an illuminating evaluation of various scientific methodologies, including hypothetico-deductivism, inductivism, and the method of independent warrant which combines features of the first two. Achinstein assesses the philosophical validity of both nineteenth-century and modern answers to questions about unobservables, and presents and defends his own solutions.

La periode envisagee (1204-1453) recouvre les deux dernieres etapes de la vie de Byzance, jalonnees par les deux prises de Constantinople : la premiere, en 1204, est effectuee lors de la quatrieme croisade, alors que la seconde, en 1453, est l'oeuvre des Turcs ottomans. Entre ces dates se situe l'occupation latine de l'empire byzantin, qui prendra fin pour Constantinople en 1261 et qui sera suivie par la restauration progressive, mais partielle, de l'empire, effectuee sous les Paleologues.
