Book Philosophical Difference and Advanced Computation in Architectural Theory

Download or read book Philosophical Difference and Advanced Computation in Architectural Theory written by Jefferson Ellinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new take on the evolution of digital design theories in architecture from modernity to today, as they have been inspired both by contemporary philosophy and the emergence and access to advanced computation. It focuses on how concepts of difference in philosophy transformed architectural design theory and takes on even more significance with the introduction and ubiquitous use of computers within the discipline, changing the architectural design paradigm forever. Beginning with a presentation of American Pragmatism’s push towards process, the book continues on to Husserl’s influence on the modern movement, mid-century phenomenology, post-structuralist Derridean exchanges with architects, the Deleuzian influence on the smoothing of form and finally contemporary architectural references to speculative realism. Analyzing the arc of design theory as influenced by philosophical and computational logics, this book presents the transformation to contemporary design approaches that includes more biology, more data and more information, moving from "less is more" to "From Less to More!" Philosophical Difference and Advanced Computation in Architectural Theory is an influential read for students and academics of architectural theory, computational design and related areas.

Book Architectural Philosophy

Download or read book Architectural Philosophy written by Andrew E. Benjamin and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architectural Philosophy is the first book to outline a philosophical account of architecture and to establish the singularity of architectural practice and theory. This dazzling sequence of essays opens out the subject of architecture, touching on issues as wide ranging as the problem of memory and the dystopias of science fiction. Arguing for the indissolubility of form and function, Architectural Philosophy explores both the definition of the site and the possibility of alterity. The analysis of the nature of the present and the complex sructure of repetition allows for the possibility of judgement, a judgement that arises from a reworked politics of architecture.>

Book Algorithmic Architecture

Download or read book Algorithmic Architecture written by Kostas Terzidis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the word design owe its origin to Latin and not Greek roots? Where do the limits of the human mind lie? How does ambiguity enter the deterministic world of computation? Who was Parmenides and why is his philosophy still puzzling today? This unique volume challenges the reader to tackle all these complex questions and more. Algorithmic Architecture is not a typical theory-based architectural book; it is not a computer programming or language tutorial book either. It contains a series of provocative design projects, and yet it is not just a design or graphic art book per se. Following the tradition of architecture as a conglomeration of various design fields - engineering, theory, art, and recently, computation - the challenge of this book is to present a concept that, like architecture, is a unifying theme for many diverse disciplines. An algorithm is not only a step-by-step problem-solving procedure, a series of lines of computer codes or a mechanistic linguistic expression, but is also an ontological construct with deep philosophical, social, design, and artistic repercussions. Consequently, this book presents many, various and often seemingly disparate points of view that lead to the establishment of one common theme; algorithmic architecture.

Download or read book EigenArchitecture written by Ludger Hovestadt and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shifts the frame of reference for today’s network- and structure oriented discussions from the applied computational tools of the 20th century back to the abstractness of 19th century mathematics. It re-reads George Boole, Richard Dedekind, Hermann Grassmann and Bernhard Riemann in a surprising manner. EigenArchitecture argues for a literacy of the digital, displacing the role of geometrical craftsmanship. Thus, architecture can be liberated from today’s economical, technocratic and bureaucratic straight jackets: from physicalistic optimization, sociological balancing, and ideological naturalizations. The book comprises a programmatic text on the role of technology in architecture, a philosophical text on the generic and on algebraic articulation, and six exemplary projects by postgraduate students in 2012 at the Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design at ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Book Contagious Architecture

Download or read book Contagious Architecture written by Luciana Parisi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proposal that algorithms are not simply instructions to be performed but thinking entities that construct digital spatio-temporalities. In Contagious Architecture, Luciana Parisi offers a philosophical inquiry into the status of the algorithm in architectural and interaction design. Her thesis is that algorithmic computation is not simply an abstract mathematical tool but constitutes a mode of thought in its own right, in that its operation extends into forms of abstraction that lie beyond direct human cognition and control. These include modes of infinity, contingency, and indeterminacy, as well as incomputable quantities underlying the iterative process of algorithmic processing. The main philosophical source for the project is Alfred North Whitehead, whose process philosophy is specifically designed to provide a vocabulary for “modes of thought” exhibiting various degrees of autonomy from human agency even as they are mobilized by it. Because algorithmic processing lies at the heart of the design practices now reshaping our world—from the physical spaces of our built environment to the networked spaces of digital culture—the nature of algorithmic thought is a topic of pressing importance that reraises questions of control and, ultimately, power. Contagious Architecture revisits cybernetic theories of control and information theory's notion of the incomputable in light of this rethinking of the role of algorithmic thought. Informed by recent debates in political and cultural theory around the changing landscape of power, it links the nature of abstraction to a new theory of power adequate to the complexities of the digital world.

Book Paradigms in Computing

Download or read book Paradigms in Computing written by David Jason Gerber and published by Evolo. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably, the convergence of the cyber, physical, and social is producing a potent set of possibilities that challenges and fosters an open polemical debate of the notions of Design Agency and the pluri-potent Paradigms in Computing for design practice. By soliciting contributors from the fields of Design, Architecture, Media Arts, Science, Engineering, Philosophy, and Cultural Theory, Paradigms in Computing will lend itself to furthering this discourse. In order to elicit critical discussion, the book sought answers and provocations to the questions of integration, disintegration, and or novel realizations of computation for design practices from within these fields of inquiry and for the highly information-rich built environments of today and the future. Paradigms in Computing: Making, Machines, and Models for Design Agency in Architecture is a curated series of essays and projects.

Book The Tao of Architecture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amos Ih Tiao Chang
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2017-04-04
  • ISBN : 1400885086
  • Pages : 102 pages

Download or read book The Tao of Architecture written by Amos Ih Tiao Chang and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Lloyd Wright first noted the affinity between modern Western architecture and the philosophy of the ancient Chinese writer Laotzu. In this classic work, Amos Ih Tiao Chang expands on that idea, developing the parallel with the aid of architectural drawings and Chinese paintings. Now with a new foreword by David Wang, this book reveals the vitality of intangible, or negative, elements. Chang writes that these qualities make architectonic forms "come alive, become human, naturally harmonize with one another, and enable us to experience them with human sensibility." The Tao of Architecture continues to be essential reading for understanding the intersection between architecture and philosophy.

Book A Productive Misunderstanding Architecture Theory and French Philosophy 1965 to 1990

Download or read book A Productive Misunderstanding Architecture Theory and French Philosophy 1965 to 1990 written by Jana Berankova and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These case studies share a common thread: a preoccupation with structuralist and poststructuralist concerns with language. However, concepts such as "structure," "event," and "meaning" often have different meanings for each of these architects. Thus, my project could be described as a history and criticism of architectural theory--one that focuses specifically on the dissonances and contradictions present within the theoretical writings of these architects, while examining the polemics and discussions between them. I consider their built work only to the extent that it helps to elucidate or challenge theoretical concepts. Thus, in my case study on Aldo Rossi's writings, I interrogate the analogy between the structuralist concern for articulating discrete and finite linguistic units and the latter's notion of "type" and urban morphology. In the chapter on Alan Colquhoun, I discuss the influence that the work of Roland Barthes, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Ferdinand de Saussure had on his reflections about "meaning" and "convention" in architecture.
