This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Moral, Political, and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2 Most of the principles, and reasonings, contained in this volume, were published in a work in three volumes, called A Treatise of Human Nature A work which the Author had projected before he College, and which he wrote and published not long after. But not finding it successful, he was sensible of his error in going to the press too early, and he cast the whole anew in the following pieces, where some negligences in his former reasoning and more in the expres sion, are, he hopes, corrected. Yet several writers, who have honoured the Author's Philosophy with answers, have taken care to direct all their batteries against the juvenile work, which the Author never acknowledged, and have affected to triumph in any advantages, which, they imagined. They had obtained over it: A practice very contrary to all rules of candour and fairodealing, and a strong instance of those polemical artifices, which a bigotted zeal thinks itself author ised to employ. Henceforth, the Author desires, that the following Pieces may alone be regarded as containing his philosophical senments and principles) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Love s Knowledge

Download or read book Love s Knowledge written by Martha C. Nussbaum and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together Nussbaum's published papers on the relationship between literature and philosophy, especially moral philosophy. The papers, many of them previously inaccessible to non-specialist readers, deal with such fundamental issues as the relationship between style and content in the exploration of ethical issues; the nature of ethical attention and ethical knowledge and their relationship to written forms and styles; and the role of the emotions in deliberation and self-knowledge. Nussbaum investigates and defends a conception of ethical understanding which involves emotional as well as intellectual activity, and which gives a certain type of priority to the perception of particular people and situations rather than to abstract rules. She argues that this ethical conception cannot be completely and appropriately stated without turning to forms of writing usually considered literary rather than philosophical. It is consequently necessary to broaden our conception of moral philosophy in order to include these forms. Featuring two new essays and revised versions of several previously published essays, this collection attempts to articulate the relationship, within such a broader ethical inquiry, between literary and more abstractly theoretical elements.

Book Reminiscences Addresses and Essays Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences Addresses and Essays Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Francis Lieber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Addresses, and Essays, Vol. 1 At the request of the widow of Dr. Francis Lieber, I have undertaken to examine and arrange for publication some of his less extended, I can hardly call them his less important, writings. The task, though a pleasant one, was not easy, for the papers submitted to me were voluminous, related to a great variety of subjects, and were originally printed in divers forms during a period of literary activity which extended through almost fifty years. Moreover, while much that he wrote was upon transient topics, not much was trivial. He brought to the discussion of local and temporary questions rich stores of learning and habits of philosophical thought. Even in those essays and paragraphs which are humorous there is a grave and substantial foundation. He was thoroughly earnest in that which was least and in that which was most. He was zealous in his desire to promote the highest good of modern society by a study of the past, by a comparison of existing institutions and of the most recent acts of legislation in different countries, and by applying the fundamental principles of justice - of rights and of duties - to the passing events in America and Europe. There is consequently very little which he printed in pamphlets, magazines, or newspapers which would not be valued by a student of political science, interested in the lessons to be derived from the history of the United States. Book Literary Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Literary Essays Classic Reprint written by William Greenough Thayer Shedd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Essays A yet worse feature, perhaps, because it stands in the way of reformation, is found in the dislike of stern recuperative theories generally, and the disposition to dilute truth and tone down the austere. The intellectuality of the nation has lost a great deal of its early fibre. In theology, men shrink from thorough statements and absolute punishments, as a weak nerve does from the north wind. In philosophy, even professed stu dents avoid all the deeper problems, and all the strict science. In poetry, those who read and relish Sopho.cles, Dante, and Milton, are greatly in the minority. And in art, the lofty abstract ideal has well-nigh vanished, so that in much that goes under this name, sense becomes still more sensuous, and flesh still more carnal. The true course is to look these facts in the eye, and to act accordingly. In 1802, a great poet, English to the bone, and loving his country as he loved his own flesh, denominated Eng land a fen of stagnant waters, and invoked the stern shade of Milton to raise her up, and give her manners, virtue, free dom, power. The American Republic needs to-day a similar fidelity, and a similar affection, from all her true sons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The new views which these essays deve loped, were considered both curious and important. The essays were re-published in several Philosophical Journals, and soon after translated into French and German, and cir culated abroad through the medium of the foreign Journals. The author was not remiss in prosecuting his researches, in which he was considerably assisted by the application of principles derived from the above essays. In 1803, he was gradually led to those primary Laws, which seem to Obtain in regard to heat, and to Chemical combinations, and which it is the Object Of the present work to exhibit and elucidate. A brief outline of them was first publicly given the ensuing winter in a course of Lectures on Natural Philosophy, at the Royal Institution in London, and was left for publication in the Journals Of the Institution but he is not informed whether that was done. The author has ever since been occasionally urged by several of his philosophical friends to lose no time in communicating the results Of his enquiries to the public, alleging, that the interests of science, and his own reputation, might suffer by delay.
