Book Fools Frauds and Firebrands

Download or read book Fools Frauds and Firebrands written by Roger Scruton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A devastating critique of New Left thinking. In Fools, Frauds and Firebrands, Roger Scruton first surveys and then deconstructs the golden idols of left wing thought from the 1960s to the present day. He dissects the hollow works of Hobsbawm and E. P. Thompson, Galbraith and Dworkin, Sartre and Foucault and exposes the lack of coherence in the works of Althusser, Lacan, Deleuze, Badiou and Žižek. Scruton ponders why the humanities have become so unambiguously aligned to the left, and reveals how fully such thinking has seized the academy in its grasp. In this provocative, compelling and highly entertaining book he explains why empty rhetoric abounds over careful analysis and blatant nonsense over respectable logic, in a shattering demolition of some of today's most fashionable philosophers.

Book The Moral Fool

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hans-Georg Moeller
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-15
  • ISBN : 0231519249
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Moral Fool written by Hans-Georg Moeller and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justice, equality, and righteousness these are some of our greatest moral convictions. Yet in times of social conflict, morals can become rigid, making religious war, ethnic cleansing, and political purges possible. Morality, therefore, can be viewed as pathology-a rhetorical, psychological, and social tool that is used and abused as a weapon. An expert on Eastern philosophies and social systems theory, Hans-Georg Moeller questions the perceived goodness of morality and those who claim morality is inherently positive. Critiquing the ethical "fanaticism" of Western moralists, such as Immanuel Kant, Lawrence Kohlberg, John Rawls, and the utilitarians, Moeller points to the absurd fundamentalisms and impracticable prescriptions arising from definitions of good. Instead he advances a theory of "moral foolishness," or moral asceticism, extracted from the "amoral" philosophers of East Asia and such thinkers as Ludwig Wittgenstein and Niklas Luhmann. The moral fool doesn't understand why ethics are necessarily good, and he isn't convinced that the moral perspective is always positive. In this way he is like most people, and Moeller defends this foolishness against ethical pathologies that support the death penalty, just wars, and even Jerry Springer's crude moral theater. Comparing and contrasting the religious philosophies of Christianity, Daoism, and Zen Buddhism, Moeller presents a persuasive argument in favor of amorality.

Book God and the Philosophers

Download or read book God and the Philosophers written by Paul Edwards and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This witty and learned exploration of critical views on the nature and existence of God, as expressed by major philosophers of the Western world from the medieval period to the present day, is the last work of noted philosopher Paul Edwards. In his unique trademark style, laced with erudition and acerbic humor, Edwards addresses how the concept of God has changed over the centuries, in large part due to the analyses of such skeptical thinkers as David Hume, Thomas Paine, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Bertrand Russell. A longtime critic of theistic arguments, Edwards demonstrates a masterful understanding of the ways in which the scientific revolution of the 17th century, the Enlightenment of the 18th century, the evolutionary materialism of the 19th century, and the rise of analytic and existentialist philosophies in the 20th century prepared the way for the growing role of atheism in the 21st century. This work is a tour de force - a master storyteller''s idiosyncratic evaluation of the views of dozens of Western thinkers on perennial topics in the philosophy of religion. Though not all of the philosophers discussed were nonbelievers or antireligious, they can be considered to be - like Edwards himself -"freethinkers." They pursued the cause of knowledge wherever their thinking led them, often to iconoclastic positions. Editor Timothy Madigan, who gave Edwards thoughtful feedback over the years on various drafts of this work and compiled it for publication after Edwards''s death, has written an appreciative and informative introduction.

Book Tyranny from Plato to Trump

Download or read book Tyranny from Plato to Trump written by Andrew Fiala and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power grabs, partisan stand-offs, propaganda, and riots make for tantalizing fiction, but what do we do when that drama becomes a reality all around us? For a country founded as an escape from British tyranny, the United States seems to have devolved into a land where tyrants rise to power, sycophants blindly follow, and the entire nation suffers. As ancient Greek philosophers warned us, chaotic tragedy unfolds in the absence of reason, and the only cure is a return to wisdom and virtue. America’s founding fathers knew this lesson all too well and dreamed of an enlightened citizenry guided by better-than-ideological dictators. Using contemporary events to illuminate universal human weaknesses, Andrew Fiala charts the perennial history of tyrannical takeovers and the masses who support them and ultimately suffer under their rule. Ultimately, Fiala also points to a solution. Knowing the cyclical nature of tyranny, we can build safeguards against our worst inclinations and keep alive the freedoms our founding fathers envisioned for this nation.

Download or read book The Rattling Grave written by Michael Darklight and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Rattling Grave" is a more personal, more intricate look into the mind of MvDarklight. It wanders into the flickers of light, between life, love, death, and darkness. It does so in a sweet and beautiful way that few books have ever done. It never glorifies the dark but rather, creates a contrast between these themes to ultimately deliver a resonating, powerful message of hope, of love, dignity, inspiration, and resurrection. "The Rattling Grave expands on what my first book tried to accomplish in every way, from surreal short stories to tense, chilling narratives, to the full versions of my work not shared in their entirety on social media. It is the accumulation of many sleepless nights and deep introspection.Several stories are true, as bizarre as they might seem, others are even nods to the fans of my work who have touched my life. Some stories are intense, some of the poems are too, but they are for the faint of heart; That is the point. That even a faint pulse, even a flicker of light, even the tiniest bit of love left in a broken heart can bring you back to life." Michael V Darklight

Book Concepts and Reality in the History of Philosophy

Download or read book Concepts and Reality in the History of Philosophy written by Fiona Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-01-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces a deep misunderstanding about the relation of concepts and reality in the history of philosophy. It exposes the influence of the mistake in the thought of Locke, Berkeley, Kant, Nietzche and Bradley, and suggests that the solution can be found in Hegelian thought. Ellis argues that the treatment proposed exemplifies Hegel's dialectical method. This is an important contribution to this area of philosophy.
