Book Philodemus and Greek Papyri Classic Reprint

Download or read book Philodemus and Greek Papyri Classic Reprint written by Paul G. Naiditch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philodemus and Greek Papyri Coming to the island of Chios in the year 1749, the Irish traveller Lord Charlemont observed that its Monastery possessed "a sort of library with many manuscripts lying in dust and rubbish. We spent an hour looking them over, hoping to have discovered some ancient treasure, but found nothing but some manuscripts of the Greek Fathers." Charlemont's desire to locate notable classical works was hardly limited to him: it belonged to an old tradition. Efforts to recover manuscripts of classical writings reach back to antiquity itself. These were, inevitably, both occasional in nature as well as rigorous and deliberate. Only a few attempts, however, were systematic. Perhaps most notable were the efforts made at the Library of Alexandria. Over twenty-two hundred years ago, its collections contained hundreds of thousands of papyrus rolls. These survived at least for two centuries and not impossibly for half a millennium or more. Eventually, however, they were lost. The rolls themselves, whether burnt by Caesar's fire or destroyed by disintegration, infestation, accident, censorship, or indifference, disappeared. Additional copies, if they were produced, were insufficient to preserve the collections; and, with the decline of interest in classical literature, there was in addition less incentive either to copy texts anew or to preserve texts already in existence. During the second century of the common era, the works of scores of authors had been available: by the fifth century, it appears that only a handful of authors were regularly read or consulted; and much of classical literature was lost. In the fourteenth century and the fifteenth another notable attempt to recover the classics was inaugurated. Inspired by Petrarch and his circle, enthusiasts undertook to retrieve and revivify the literature of classical antiquity. Petrarch himself has been described as "the first man since antiquity to make a systematic collection of Latin classical manuscripts." His friends and successors continued his work, and the invention of printing established on a firm basis, and made generally available, the texts thus laboriously or fortuitously recovered. Indeed, most of the ancient compositions included in classical series today were first printed in the fifteenth or sixteenth century: Latin classics notably by the printers Sweynheym and Pannartz, Johann de Spira, and Nicolaus Jenson, the Greek classics chiefly by Aldus Manutius and his heirs, Froben and the Stephani. The discovery of classical writings did not cease with the 1500's. Yet, after mid-centuty, those new works that came to light were of less interest to the majority of scholars and men of letters than those that earlier had been found. Where previous years had seen the first published editions of major works, writings by Cicero, Vergil, and Livy, Homer, Aristotle, Thucydides, Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Pindar, the latter had to be content with Appian. Aretaeus, Aristaenetus and Antoninus Liberalis: authors not without significance, but also unlikely to excite general interest or enthusiasm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Papyri in the British Museum, Vol. 5: Catalogue, With d104s The Early Byzantine documents are in general not very noteworthy, but 1649 and 1650, which throw light on some liturgical officials and on the care of the embankments, and the interesting but unfortunately mutilated petition, 1651, deserve mention. The Late Byzantine documents include a number of tax receipts, a fair number of leases, a Latin letter mutilated but valuable because of the rarity of Latin letters, a Greek letter (1786) interesting for its vulgar Greek, and some useful contracts of'a miscellaneous character, age a contract of surety (1793) mentioning the carpal-unit of taxation, two contracts of partnership (1794 and and a very puzzling agreement about land (1796) which would be of really exceptional interest if the editor's conjecture as to its nature (about which he is now even more dubious than when the sheet in question was printed off) should be correct. Download or read book Greek Papyri in the British Museum Vol 4 written by Harold Idris Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-10 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Papyri in the British Museum, Vol. 4: Catalogue, With Texts; The Aphrodito Papyri The general principles followed in this volume are the same as those adopted in the previous ones, which were explained and justified in the introduction to vol. II. There are, however, certain changes, which require a brief notice. As announced in the introduction to vol. III, the method of numbering the texts by their inventory numbers only has been abandoned in favour of a numerical sequence of catalogue numbers, the inventory numbers being of course added in each case. The catalogue numbers begin with I 332, the last number contained in the previous volume having been 13 31. This change has involved certain others. The references in the index are now not to the pages of the catalogue but to the papyri themselves and moreover, since all the Greek papyri of the present collection are included in the volume, either among the texts or among the descriptions, the previous 'table of papyri has been omitted. A numerical index, in order of inventory numbers, has been added for the purpose of enabling readers to find any papyrus pre viously referred to by its inventory number. The numbers of papyri contained in this volume are given in heavy Arabic numerals, according to the principle adopted in the volumes of the Egypt Exploration Fund those, on the other hand, which occur in previous volumes are referred to, as before, in ordinary type. There is, however, an exception to the foregoing rule. The Coptic papyri of the collection were not finally arranged for publication, and consequently did not receive their catalogue numbers, until almost the whole of the Greek portion of the catalogue had been printed off. Consequently most of the references to them in the commentary on the Greek texts are to their inventory numbers only. Since they are included in the numerical index at the end, documents thus referred to can, however, be identified without much trouble. Book Greek Papyri in the British Museum Vol 2

Download or read book Greek Papyri in the British Museum Vol 2 written by F. G. Kenyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Papyri in the British Museum, Vol. 2: Catalogue, With Texts HE present volume of the Catalogue of Papyri differs in some points of detail and arrangement from the first. The first volume dealt with the papyri acquired by the Museum up to the year 1890, and every such papyrus, with the exception of the merest scraps (and not excepting some even of them), was included in it, both in the texts and in the accompanying atlas of facsimiles. Since that date, however, the number ofpapyri discovered in' Egypt has increased to such an extent that it is no longer either possible or desirable to publish the texts of all in full. In the present volume, therefore, which covers the acquisitions of the Museum from the beginning of 1891 to the middle of 1895, a selection has been made, and only the texts of the more perfect and important papyri are given in full. By way of compensation, however, the numerical table prefixed to the texts, which in the first volume gave merely the briefest possible description of each papyrus, has been enlarged into a full descriptive catalogue, so as to provide an adequate amount of information with regard to those papyri of which the full texts are not printed 1. In all, about 410 papyri are included within the range of this volume; and the texts of 262 distinct documents are printed in full. A Similar principle of selection has been applied to the facsimiles, the best and most important papyri only (especially those which have precise dates) being selected for reproduction. The scope of this volume has been determined, so far as the lower limit of time is concerned, by the 'date (may, 1895) at which the British Museum received its share of the Petrie Papyri. To have included descriptions of these (amounting to about'120 in all), together with the texts of those which have not hitherto been published, would have swelled considerably the $126 of a volume already much larger than its predecessor. The Petrie papyri, therefore, together with all subsequent acquisitions of the. Museum, are excluded from its survey. It so happens, however, that nearly all the. More important papyri acquired Since the date at which it closes have already been, published elsewhere; the Petrie Papyri in the two volumes edited by Prof. Mahaffy 2, and a large proportion of the more recent acquisitions in the two volumes edited by Messrs. B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt 3. With a few exceptions, therefore, all the Greek papyri in the British Museum are now accessible to scholars. Book Oxford Handbook of Epicurus and Epicureanism

Download or read book Oxford Handbook of Epicurus and Epicureanism written by Phillip Mitsis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BCE), though often despised for his materialism, hedonism, and denial of the immortality of the soul during many periods of history, has at the same time been a source of inspiration to figures as diverse as Vergil, Hobbes, Thomas Jefferson, and Bentham. This volume offers authoritative discussions of all aspects of Epicurus's philosophy and then traces out some of its most important subsequent influences throughout the Western intellectual tradition. Such a detailed and comprehensive study of Epicureanism is especially timely given the tremendous current revival of interest in Epicurus and his rivals, the Stoics. The thirty-one contributions in this volume offer an unmatched resource for all those wishing to deepen their knowledge of Epicurus' powerful arguments about happiness, death, and the nature of the material world and our place in it. At the same time, his arguments are carefully placed in the context of ancient and subsequent disputes, thus offering readers the opportunity of measuring Epicurean arguments against a wide range of opponents--from Platonists, Aristotelians and Stoics, to Hegel and Nietzsche, and finally on to such important contemporary philosophers as Thomas Nagel and Bernard Williams. The volume offers separate and detailed discussions of two fascinating and ongoing sources of Epicurean arguments, the Herculaneum papyri and the inscription of Diogenes of Oenoanda. Our understanding of Epicureanism is continually being enriched by these new sources of evidence and the contributors to this volume have been able to make use of them in presenting the most current understanding of Epicurus's own views. By the same token, the second half of the volume is devoted to the extraordinary influence of Epicurean doctrines, often either neglected or misunderstood, in literature, political thinking, scientific innovation, personal conceptions of freedom and happiness, and in philosophy generally. Taken together, the contributions in this volume offer the most comprehensive and detailed account of Epicurus and Epicureanism available in English.
