Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Report on the Commercial Fibers of the Philippines, Memoria Preliminar Las Fibras Comerciales De Filipinas, 1903 It is the object of this paper to set forth briefly some facts regarding the fiber plants and their products of the Philippine Archipelago which are at the present time receiving commercial attention. It is not now practicable to mention all those which are of economic importance; for, as this is one line of work which this Bureau is taking up, treatment of such plants and their fibers will be reserved for later publications. Strictly speaking, Manila hemp and maguey are the only raw fibers exported from these Islands at the present time, and of these the former rank among the economic products of the Archipelago. The production and exportation of Manila hemp is indeed the most important industry of the Islands at the present time, both from a financial and a commercial point of view. Almost every ship that makes a trip to the south of Manila brings back a consignment of Manila hemp, which in turn is loaded into regular hemp-carrying steamers for American and European ports. Formerly the fiber was shipped to Manila, but during the past two years ocean-going vessels have loaded in Cebu with full cargoes for foreign ports. Manila hemp came into notice in the early part of last century, but it was not recognized as a product of importance until about 1850. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New or Noteworthy Philippine Plants, V.-XII The present article has been prepared as material and data became available, as was the case with the previous papers published under the above title.1 Our receipts of Philippine botanical material from various sources approximate numbers annually and the percentage of un described species and interesting forms is very large, as is to be expected in a region botanically so little known as is this Archipelago. In making the preliminary identifications, immediately after the receipt of the material in the herbarium, many of the interesting forms are detected and described, but in this paper, as in the preceding ones of the series, only a portion of these forms are considered. Practically no work in some groups can at present be done in Manila, owing to a lack of literature; in certain ones, all material is submitted to specialists for identification and report. Frequently, specific identifications can not be made at once, because of a lack of complete material, so that several hundred sheets, apparently representing undescribed species, remain in the herbarium of this Bureau and for one reason or another these will need to be considered at a later date. In general, it is not considered good policy to describe species based on a single specimen and many of the apparently un described plants at present in our herbarium have no corresponding duplicate material. In general, well-known and widely distributed species are merely enumerated with their synonyms, occurrence, distribution, etc., without the citation of specimens. In critical groups selected representative specimens only are cited. Generally speaking, when only one or two collections are cited under a species these represent the only collections extant. It Should be noted that in approximately cases Philippine records for individual species are based solely on Single collections, while in about 900 additional cases individual species records are based on two collections only. This will give some idea of the great amount of work still remaining to be done before we can hope to have a reasonably complete knowledge of the very rich Philippine flora. Collections cited in parentheses - for example, (warbufrg 14231) (loher 4250) indicate specimens not examined by me during the actual prep aration of this work, although most of these were seen by me in various European herbaria in 1907 and 1908.
