Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume consists of a chronological list of Quaker immigrants who registered, upon their arrival in Philadelphia, with the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends, by far the largest Quaker meeting in the province. It is based on the certificates of removal from the Meetings of Friends of which they were members in other countries and other colonies. The work is instrumental to the researcher interested in tracing early immigrants to Penn's Colony. A large proportion of the Quakers who immigrated into the Province of Pennsylvania took up residence in Philadelphia. Of the nineteen monthly meetings established in Pennsylvania prior to 1750, the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting easily ranks first in the number of certificates received. As a rule, the certificates give the following information: name, date of certificate, former place of residence, former meeting, date of receipt, and other details of quaint and useful interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "holy experiment" of the Quakers involved political hegemony and economic wealth. Gradually the Quakers realized that they had become involved in the compromises fatal to the spiritual integrity of the Society of Friends itself. Download or read book Prisoners of Congress written by Norman E. Donoghue II and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1777, Congress labeled Quakers who would not take up arms in support of the War of Independence as “the most Dangerous Enemies America knows” and ordered Pennsylvania and Delaware to apprehend them. In response, Keystone State officials sent twenty men—seventeen of whom were Quakers—into exile, banishing them to Virginia, where they were held for a year. Prisoners of Congress reconstructs this moment in American history through the experiences of four families: the Drinkers, the Fishers, the Pembertons, and the Gilpins. Identifying them as the new nation’s first political prisoners, Norman E. Donoghue II relates how the Quakers, once the preeminent power in Pennsylvania and an integral constituency of the colonies and early republic, came to be reviled by patriots who saw refusal to fight the English as borderline sedition. Surprising, vital, and vividly told, this narrative of political and literal warfare waged by the United States against a pacifist religious group during the Revolutionary War era sheds new light on an essential aspect of American history. It will appeal to anyone interested in learning more about the nation’s founding.

Book In the Midst of Perpetual Fetes

Download or read book In the Midst of Perpetual Fetes written by David Waldstreicher and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative study, David Waldstreicher investigates the importance of political festivals in the early American republic. Drawing on newspapers, broadsides, diaries, and letters, he shows how patriotic celebrations and their reproduction in a rapidly expanding print culture helped connect local politics to national identity. Waldstreicher reveals how Americans worked out their political differences in creating a festive calendar. Using the Fourth of July as a model, members of different political parties and social movements invented new holidays celebrating such events as the ratification of the Constitution, Washington's birthday, Jefferson's inauguration, and the end of the slave trade. They used these politicized rituals, he argues, to build constituencies and to make political arguments on a national scale. While these celebrations enabled nonvoters to participate intimately in the political process and helped dissenters forge effective means of protest, they had their limits as vehicles of democratization or modes of citizenship, Waldstreicher says. Exploring the interplay of region, race, class, and gender in the development of a national identity, he demonstrates that an acknowledgment of the diversity and conflict inherent in the process is crucial to any understanding of American politics and culture.

Book A Retrospect of Early Quakerism

Download or read book A Retrospect of Early Quakerism written by Ezra Michener and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Retrospect of Early Quakerism: Being Extracts From the Records of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the Meetings Composing It; To Which Is Prefixed an Account of Their First Establishment The task may be difficult and the performance rare, but a well-written autobiography is perhaps the most interesting and instructive history which we can have of a man. While it describes his actions, and delineates his character with a precision to which other pens could not attain, it correctly informs us of the motives which prompted the one, and the circumstances which formed the other. The same is true of any number of men, considered in their collective capacity. None can so certainly know their performances, none so clearly comprehend their motives, none so fully appreciate their true character, its lights and shadows, as themselves. The follow ing work is founded upon this assumption. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book World of Trouble

Download or read book World of Trouble written by Richard Godbeer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate account of the American Revolution as seen through the eyes of a Quaker pacifist couple living in Philadelphia Historian Richard Godbeer presents a richly layered and intimate account of the American Revolution as experienced by a Philadelphia Quaker couple, Elizabeth Drinker and the merchant Henry Drinker, who barely survived the unique perils that Quakers faced during that conflict. Spanning a half-century before, during, and after the war, this gripping narrative illuminates the Revolution's darker side as patriots vilified, threatened, and in some cases killed pacifist Quakers as alleged enemies of the revolutionary cause. Amid chaos and danger, the Drinkers tried as best they could to keep their family and faith intact. Through one couple's story, Godbeer opens a window on a uniquely turbulent period of American history, uncovers the domestic, social, and religious lives of Quakers in the late eighteenth century, and situates their experience in the context of transatlantic culture and trade. A master storyteller takes his readers on a moving journey they will never forget.

As the metropolis of the new Province on the Delaware, Philadelphia became better known abroad than any other part of Penn sylvania, and a large proportion of the steady stream Of Quaker colonists which poured into the Province made this city its Objective point. Of the nineteen monthly meetings established in Pennsylvania prior to 1750, as the writer's investigation Of the manuscript records has shown, Philadelphia Monthly Meeting easily ranks first as to the number of certificates received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Perennial Philadelphians tells the story of the city's inherited aristocracy—of Wanamakers and Drexels, of Biddles and Cadwaladers. Drawing on history, genealogy, politics, economics, the fine arts, private diaries, and the impressions and anecdotes of myriad living witnesses, Nathaniel Burt paints a fascinating portrait of Old Philadelphians. He traces the succession of a dynasty of doctors or lawyers, explores the country club scene, and takes us to regattas on the Schuylkill, fox hunts in Radnor, and horse shows in Devon. First published in 1963, this classic text has lost none of its timeliness. An adept social commentator, Burt cuts aside the centuries-old protective coloration in which Old Philadelphians have wrapped themselves, and reveals who these people are and how they manage to perpetuate themselves from generation to generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philadelphia Quakers: A Brief History is a concise but insightful account of the Religious Society of Friends, beginning with their founding in mid-seventeenth-century England. Persecuted for his non-conformist beliefs, William Penn, in 1682, established a refuge for Quakers in his New World colony of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia became the capital city of Penn's utopian colony dedicated to the ideals of religious toleration, participatory government, and brotherly love. Afterward, Philadelphia Quakers became a minority in the City of Brotherly Love, but continued to exercise a disproportionate influence on local, state, and national affairs through such humanitarian reforms as abolitionism, women's rights, care for the mentally ill, Native American affairs, and prison reform. Quakers also experienced a religious schism between more traditional Quietists and evangelical Friends. That schism plagued Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the central governing body of Friends, until 1955 when the two sides reunited. Richly illustrated, Philadelphia Quakers tells the story of a remarkable people whose active commitment to religious freedom, social diversity, and peace has had a profound impact on American society and government.
