The Fallopian tubes, for several reasons, may become inflamed, a common cause being gonorrhoeal poison. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia Medical Times, Vol. 7: A Bi-Weekly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science; October 14, 1876 It is plain that the definite announce ment of papers upon fixed topics by men of acknowledged rank is far more likely to attract than the expectation Of volunteer articles by medical nobodies. Further, very few men are prepared to discuss any serious question usefully without previous warning or preparation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia Medical Times, Vol. 7: A Bi-Weekly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science; April 14, 1877 Of the various books written by this John the present has, we believe, been the most widely praised, and perhaps will be the most generally liked. In some parts it certainly is deserving of much admiration; but we confess to a prejudice in favor of his first book, Odd Hours of a Physician. The opening and closing chapters of the volume before us have pleased us most; and we think all husbands whose name is legion - should read them. Concerning a Wife is not mere words and theory: it has in it much that is the very basis of happiness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia Medical Times, Vol. 8: A Bi-Weekly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science; September 14, 1878 Under these Circumstances it is very obvious that erecting and sustaining hos pitals in Philadelphia and similar places would add very materially to the expenses of the service, provided Of course the food, etc., were as good in those hospitals as the sailors now receive. Again, in these same city hospitals are found large staffs of the most eminent men of the profession, devoted each to some special branch of medical science; a band whose collective wisdom and skill certainly must be much greater than that Of the single marine hos pital surgeon, who would unite in his own person all the medical and surgical knowl edge and skill available in the proposed hospital. It certainly is very clear that there are many disadvantages in the proposed change, and the report of Dr. Woodworth fails to make apparent any at all commensurate advantages other than the magnifying of the number and importance of the marine hospital service, and the supporting by government of an increased number of physicians, - the last, indeed, a result, in, the present overcrowded state of the pro fession, devoutly to be prayed for. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia Medical Times, Vol. 6: A Bi-Weekly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science; August 5, 1876 Dr. Hu'tchinson replied that the average size of the vegetations on the mitral valve was about that of a pin's head. More of them were certainly too large to find their way so far as to the smaller vessels of the brain, and they were all unquestionably the result of re cent in ammation. Dr. Longstreth said he had met the state ment, but could not now recall its source, that emboli derived from vegetations on the mitral orifice were smaller than those coming from a similar condition of the aortic valve. The ex planation offered was that, having a greater distance to travel, and also from the fact of being within the cavity of the ventricle dur ing at least one contraction of the muscular wall of the heart, the emboli of mitral origin were more likely to be broken into very small fragments than those of aortic origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia Medical Times, Vol. 6: A Bi-Weekly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science; July 8, 1876 I have given it (by inhalation) in at least fifty different cases, comprising not less than half that number of different forms of diseases; and found it to be of service in angina pectoris, in dyspnoea often attending phthisis immediately preceding death, hysterical convulsions, asthma, neuralgia, intermittent fever, and chorea. In angina pectoris it does not act very quickly, but it undoubtedly shortens the attack. In dyspnoea due to the above mentioned cause I have found it to be very efficacious; often, I feel confident, tiding a patient through the night when it seemed inevitable that he must succumb. To this statement, my colleague Dr. Ro land, who has likewise, at my suggestion, given the amyl a fair trial in this difficulty, will hear his testimony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia Medical Times, Vol. 7: A Bi-Weekly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science; October 28, 1876 Forced to meet these facts, -one of the New York dailies asserts that, although there are fewer deaths in this city, there is vastly more sickness than in the great me tropolis. AS is well put by one of our city newspapers, the lesser number of deaths in the greater number of cases proves how much better the Philadelphia doctors are than those of New York. Although we feel'this superiority, truth requires us to ac knowledge that our New York friends have magnified the number of our cases. The newspaper accounts of the frightful risk to be run in seeing the Centennial have had a great effect; not in diminishing attend ance at the great exhibition, but rather in alarming those who congregate to it. The desire to see it is so deep-rooted that the multitude comes, although it may feel like an army going to the conflict. The precautions taken by some of the fearful ones are very amusing. One party we know of brought a cask of the notorious Croton water and persisted in drinking it at the table-d hote and elsewhere, although by standing it had become fairly putrid. Another family, Staying fifteen miles away from the city, in a hilly district full of springs of the best water, receive daily their beloved and trusted Croton, bottled at their residence in New York. Ephraim truly is joined to his idols. The hotel keepers, wine-merchants, etc., owe a debt of gratitude to the New York press, as the extra demand for claret at the table helps in no mean way to fill the general ex chequer.
