Book Philadelphia Naval Shipyard

Download or read book Philadelphia Naval Shipyard written by Joseph-James Ahern and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first government-owned navy yard in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the nation and the largest city in the young republic, was started with two docks in 1798. The area was enlarged and shipbuilding at this site increased, notably during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The yard's area was not dramatically increased, however, until the federal government purchased the 800-acre League Island and closed the former facility in 1868. The golden age of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard came during World War II, when it built fifty-three ships and converted or overhauled some twelve hundred more. Workers at the yard numbered seventy thousand at its peak. After the 1970s, however, shipbuilding was discontinued. The yard continued to serve its country through the modernization of existing craft, but it was closed by the government in 1990 and officially decommissioned in 1996.

Book The Closing and Reuse of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard

Download or read book The Closing and Reuse of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War left the United States with a larger defense infrastructure than needed to ensure the nation's security in the post-Cold War era. Accordingly, at the instigation of the Defense Department, Congress passed Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) legislation to enable the department to close, reorganize, or other-wise convert assets to other purposes. Four rounds of BRAC closures ensued, resulting in the closure of 97 of 495 major installations. One of these was the Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although considerable work has been done to examine the economic consequences of closing or scaling back shipyards, ' these efforts have not had a great deal of quantitative data to examine. Thus, the closure of four shipyards during the BRAC process provided a unique opportunity to gather specific data about costs of closure and reuse of temporarily excess shipbuilding facilities. Recognizing this opportunity, the Navy asked RAND's National Defense Research Institute to develop a case study of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard (PNSY).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boston Marine Barracks is one of the oldest in the United States: it stands within eyeshot of the USS Constitution. Lt. Col. John R. Yates, Jr., the last commanding officer of the Barracks when it closed in 1974, researched the hundreds of letters left behind by previous Barracks commanders, their superiors and many others. They reveal the life and times of the Marines billeted at the Barracks from the early 19th century until World War II. Often, of course, the Marines were deployed to far-off events and places. This book also tells the story of the Barracks Marines' participation in the Seminole Wars, the action in Samoa, the Boer Wars, the Philippine Insurrection, Panama, the Boxer Rebellion, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War and World War I. This book reveals a naval prison's existence on the shipyard for which the Marines were responsible for many years.
