Book Phil Dunn s Fury at Sea Rapid Naval Wargaming Including Paddy Griffith s One Eyed Napoleonic Naval Rules

Download or read book Phil Dunn s Fury at Sea Rapid Naval Wargaming Including Paddy Griffith s One Eyed Napoleonic Naval Rules written by John Curry and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phil Dunn, author of the classic naval wargaming book, Sea Battles, has written a new book on rapid naval wargames. Chapters include fast play rules that allow even the largest battles to be fought to a satisfying conclusion in a single session. In 1916, Jutland was a 'no-hoper' for the Germans. This was not true earlier in the war. The scenario is for a classic war-deciding encounter set in 1915. During the late 1920's, the USA made plans for war with Britain. The rules and scenario allow this classic 'what if' scenario of the Royal Navy to be set against the United States Navy. The outcome would have changed the political map of the world and the course of the 20th century. Also included are memories of a lifetime of naval wargaming, The book is supplemented by Paddy Griffith's One-eyed Napoleonic Naval Rules as used by the Royal Military Academy's Wargaming Club. Also included is an example of Paddy Griffith's naval wargaming scenario for the Battle of the Nile in 1798.

This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phil Dunn, founder of the Naval Wargaming Society and author, presents his World War II era campaign rules. This book documents the rules for one of the classic wargaming campaigns of early British Wargaming. Phil Dunn created global wargames using simple rules to allow players to run large scale world wars. Each player prioritises their production between naval, air and land forces and then decides on which units to build. Straightforward rules are used to control movement on the maps and arbitrate combat in the three domains of warfare. The battles can be resolved using dice rolls or, for critical battles, transferred to be fought out on the table top. The book also includes two smaller games which are eminently suitable for a solo wargamer; The Battle of Britain and Operation Sealion. This is Phil Dunn's third wargaming book. The History of Wargaming Project is edited by John Curry. It aims to present the very best wargaming books and rules to a modern audience.

Book excerpt: Naval Command is a set of wargame rules for recreating naval battles with fleets of miniature warships and aircraft in the age of the guided missile and jet aeroplane. Covering the period from the late 1950s to the modern day or near future. The game can be played with fleets ranging in size form one or two ships per side to full sized battlegroups of ten or more ships. The rules can be used for different sizes of ships ranging from small fast attack craft up to super-carriers engaged in open sea battles or littoral and amphibious missions. The aim of these rules is to create a game that captures the feel and provides a fairly accurate recreation of modern naval engagements but is still relatively quick to play with reasonably sized fleets and does not require excessive bookkeeping and paperwork. The rulebook contains all the rules needed to play the game and fleet lists for a range of nations.

Book The Viking Art of War

Download or read book The Viking Art of War written by Paddy Griffith and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of their strategic problem was the scarcity and even unreliability of their shipping. They had an essentially coastal rather than oceanic navy, and their manpower was limited. For most of the high Viking era they could field only one 'Great Army' at a time, and had to be content with relatively minor raiding operations elsewhere. Nevertheless, the appearance of even few highly-motivated Vikings in an area without good coastal defence could often spread.

Book Zones of Control

Download or read book Zones of Control written by Pat Harrigan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at wargaming’s past, present, and future—from digital games to tabletop games—and its use in entertainment, education, and military planning. With examples from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Harpoon, Warhammer 40,000, and more! Games with military themes date back to antiquity, and yet they are curiously neglected in much of the academic and trade literature on games and game history. This volume fills that gap, providing a diverse set of perspectives on wargaming’s past, present, and future. In Zones of Control, contributors consider wargames played for entertainment, education, and military planning, in terms of design, critical analysis, and historical contexts. They consider both digital and especially tabletop games, most of which cover specific historical conflicts or are grounded in recognizable real-world geopolitics. Game designers and players will find the historical and critical contexts often missing from design and hobby literature; military analysts will find connections to game design and the humanities; and academics will find documentation and critique of a sophisticated body of cultural work in which the complexity of military conflict is represented in ludic systems and procedures. Each section begins with a long anchoring chapter by an established authority, which is followed by a variety of shorter pieces both analytic and anecdotal. Topics include the history of playing at war; operations research and systems design; wargaming and military history; wargaming’s ethics and politics; gaming irregular and non-kinetic warfare; and wargames as artistic practice.

Book Complex Terrain

Book excerpt: "This book explores military operations, including indirect support to other interagency actors and functions in dense urban terrain and megacities. Dense urban terrain describes urban areas with high population densities that, in the developing world, often outstrip the capacity of local governance systems to exert formal control. The term megacity describes a city with a population of 10 million or more. These environments define patterns of human settlement. In 1950, only 30 percent of the world's population lived in cities compared to more than 55 percent in 2018. Much of this growth is concentrated in large, urban centers that connect a global flow of goods and ideas. By 2030, there will be more than 40 of these megacities"--

Book Paddy Griffith s Wargaming Operation Sealion 1940

Download or read book Paddy Griffith s Wargaming Operation Sealion 1940 written by John Curry and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paddy Griffith's wargame of Operation Sealion at the British Army Staff College in 1974 was ground breaking. It was a serious piece of academic research, using a wargame to explore a contested area of military history. He assembled a team of subject matter experts from Britain and Germany to run a wargame to explore what would have happened if the Germans had launched their planned invasion of Britain. To umpire and play in the game, he used combat veterans with senior command experience, including some who were involved in 1940. They included Adolf Galland, the Luftwaffe ace. This is the story of that game, including previously unpublished material such as briefings, analysis, guidance for umpires and post-game reflections. Their conclusions about the outcome of the game, based on using a wargame as an academic tool, were unanimous. "The resulting analysis of the Sealion Wargame is the most authoritative assessment yet produced of the prospects for this titanic and consequential hypothetical struggle." Peter Perla The book is published by the History of Wargaming Project as part of its work to document the development of wargaming.
