His writings are overflowing with conceptions that range from the Presocratics to Hegel. Nevertheless, the philosophical aspect of his work has been neglected with scholars satisfying themselves in making loose allusions to transcendentalist ideas that are said to “respire” in his writings. Therefore, our attention has been drawn to the connection of his poetry with philosophy (phenomenology), since as Emanuel Levinas once stated, “the whole of philosophy is only a meditation of Shakespeare.” Therefore, this book throws the Whitmanesque self into a typically phenomenological context, silhouetting the notion of selfhood against the views of Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Emanuel Levinas. Moreover, the book differentiates between the overall understanding of subjectivity and selfhood. The former corresponds to the representative capacities of the Cartesian cogito, which in itself is detached from the world of life. On the other hand, selfhood is defined though the idea of commitment to the overall “mattering” of the world, which in itself is not reduced to the materialist or idealist understanding. Rather, the world is what phenomenology – following Husserl – calls Lebenswelt, which corresponds to the general way in which the self finds itself attuned to the horizon of its existence.

Book excerpt: Merleau-Ponty says in his Institution and Passivity lectures that he wants to "consider criticism itself as a symbolic form" instead of doing "a philosophy of symbolic form." This invites the possibility of an unconventional thought: If critical philosophy is a symbolic form, it cannot disclose its own limits and is, in fact, uncritical. Furthermore, the symbolic form can never itself be thought according to the terms of the criticism it produces but is always only constellated and matrixed within them—a symbolic form within both reflection and what it reflects on, within consciousness and the world. Thus, as Rajiv Kaushik argues, the symbolic form is another name for what Merleau-Ponty calls ontological divergence. Only now divergence introduces the question of a limit to both the subject and philosophy itself. This is nothing less than a psychoanalysis of philosophy. Kaushik's analyses of the matrices between space—imagination, light—dark, awake—asleep, and repression—expression reveal this symbolism in its form of divergence, its lack of origin and destination. Kaushik also argues that the phenomenology of symbolism must detour from the purely descriptive method. Drawing from Merleau-Ponty's recently published course materials, and attentive to his reliance on literature and literary language, Merleau-Ponty between Philosophy and Symbolism continues the living force of Merleau-Ponty's thought and develops his radical insight of the primacy of the symbolic form, even in an ontology that claims to be about the sensible and its elements.

For Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre, debate has been rendered intractable by a fundamental misunderstanding of the terms involved. This is exacerbated, they argue, by a failure to identify and adopt an appropriate methodological approach to the problem. In this respect and for both philosophers, this error in the free will debate is symptomatic of a broader misunderstanding of philosophical enquiry as such and the method it necessitates. For Heidegger, the entire history of ‘Analytic/Western’ ontology has been fatally misconceived as a result of an effort to define the being of entities in static terms. The insistence on framing questions in respect of whether/what a being ‘is’ thus obstructs any meaningful enquiry by conceding existence at the outset of the investigation. He demands nothing less than the ‘destruction’ of that framework as a necessary step towards a radical account of freedom as a necessary feature of human experience. Sartre’s project is founded on Heidegger’s argument though he is critical of what he considers the ethical ambiguities inherent to Heidegger’s account of Dasein. Instead, Sartre pushes the premises of Heidegger’s project into a definitive claim about the nature of consciousness. Therein he argues that as the only being for whom ‘meaning’ is possible, consciousness is distanced from beings by ‘nothingness’ which ensures its ontological freedom. We propose that a thorough investigation of their projects will reveal an account of ontological freedom that does not suffer from the shortcomings of Sartrean existentialism whilst avoiding the methodological missteps of the traditional discourse. Moreover, we will suggest that overcoming Heidegger’s ambiguities can be achieved by advancing his concerns into an interrogation of the ground of Dasein and its ontological priority. Thus we can satisfy Sartre’s criticism while reinforcing the commitment to a radically different approach to philosophical enquiry. Our investigation will argue that although Sartre has misconstrued Heidegger’s work, making comprehension of his freedom all the more complicated, an argument persists which sheds new light on a seemingly stubborn philosophical problem. In so doing, a challenge will be presented to some of the fundamental premises of modern philosophical discourse, promising to reorient the approach to enquiry as such.
