  • Author : Leslie Atzmon
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2023-01-12
  • ISBN : 1350061948
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Design and Science written by Leslie Atzmon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Science addresses the inter-relationship, in both historical and contemporary contexts, between design thinking and design processes and scientific and medical research methods. Contributors address the parallels between research methodologies in design and the sciences, both of which involve the recognition of an issue, conceptualisation of ways to resolve it, and then the modelling and implementation of a viable solution. Much research across various scientific disciplines follows a similar pattern. Thematic sections explore visualisation, visual narrative and visual metaphor; biodesign and biomimicry; makers and users in design and science, and data visualisation, discussing the role of data from nature as an ultimate source of design.

Book excerpt: Single crystals of over 100 different electronically active materials have been synthesized using a variety of methods, including growth by flame-fusion, flux, melt, gel diffusion, low-temperature solution, vapor, as well as synthesis by ultra-high-pressure techniques. These crystals, including a large number of doped specimens, emphasize oxides, garnets, silicates, ferrites, fluorides, as well as a large variety of other electromagnetic materials. Charts are presented giving summary data on single crystals grown, percentage and kind of dopants, growth methods and apparatus, crystal dimensions and other physical characteristics, primary research interest or use, crystal system, class, space group, and pertinent references. Several of the growth methods and recent Laboratory accomplishments are described. (Author).

Book Advances in Photonic Crystals and Devices

Download or read book Advances in Photonic Crystals and Devices written by Narendra Kumar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, there has been a phenomenal growth in the field of photonic crystal research and has emerged as an interdisciplinary area. Photonic crystals are usually nanostructured electromagnetic media consisting of periodic variation of dielectric constant, which prohibit certain electromagnetic wave frequency ranges called photonic bandgaps to propagate through them. Photonic crystals elicited numerous interesting features by unprecedented control of light and their exploitation is a promising tool in nanophotonics and designing optical components. The book ‘Advances in Photonic Crystals and Devices’ is designed with 15 chapters with introductory as well as research and application based contents. It covers the following highlighted features: Basics of photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers Different theoretical as well as experimental approaches Current research advances from around the globe Nonlinear optics and super-continuum generation in photonic crystal fibers Magnetized cold plasma photonic crystals Liquid crystal defect embedded with graphene layers Biophysics and biomedical applications as optical sensors Two-dimensional photonic crystal demultiplexer Optical logic gates using photonic crystals A large number of references The goal of this book is to draw the background in understanding, fabrication and characterization of photonic crystals using a variety of materials and their applications in design of several optical devices. Though the book is useful as a reference for the researchers working in the area of photonics, optical computing and fabrication of nanophotonic devices, it is intended for the beginners like students pursuing their masters’ degree in photonics.

For each moon, find information on how to work with its corresponding crystals and energetic qualities, along with lists of its associated herbs, colors, essential oils, animals, and deities. Written by leading crystal expert Ashley Leavy and including lavish photography, this beautiful book will have a place on every crystal enthusiast's book shelf.

Book Photoelastic and Electro Optic Properties of Crystals

Download or read book Photoelastic and Electro Optic Properties of Crystals written by T. S. Narasimhamurty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatise reviews, for the first time, all the essential work over the past 160 years on the photoelastic and the closely related linear and quadratic electro-optic effects in isotropic and crystalline mate rials. Emphasis is placed on the phenomenal growth of the subject during the past decade and a half with the advent of the laser, with the use of high-frequency acousto-optic and electro-optic techniques, and with the discovery of new piezoelectric materials, all of which have offered a feedback to the wide interest in these two areas of solid-state physics. The first of these subjects, the photoelastic effect, was discovered by Sir David Brewster in 1815. He first found the effect in gels and subsequently found it in glasses and crystals. While the effect remained of academic interest for nearly a hundred years, it became of practical value when Coker and Filon applied it to measuring stresses in machine parts. With one photograph and subsequent analysis, the stress in any planar model can be determined. By taking sections of a three-dimensional model, complete three-dimensional stresses can be found. Hence this effect is widely applied in industry.
