Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the progress and shifts that have taken place towards understanding fungi, this volume examines most of the major groups, including Chytridiomycota, Zygomycota, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota. Topics include advances in morphological and molecular taxonomy of the highly toxigenic Fusarium species, understanding the phylogeny of the alternarioid hyphomycetes, and methods used in fungal evolutionary biology along with theory, examples, and potential applications. Also discussed are proteomics research for rapid diagnosis to invasive candidiasis as well as ways in which molecular biologists and morphosystematists can develop synergy.

Book Genetic Diversity and Colonization Patterns of Onnia Tomentosa and Phellinus Tremulae Hymenochaetaceae Aphyllophorales in the Boreal Forest Near Thunder Bay Northwestern Ontario

Download or read book Genetic Diversity and Colonization Patterns of Onnia Tomentosa and Phellinus Tremulae Hymenochaetaceae Aphyllophorales in the Boreal Forest Near Thunder Bay Northwestern Ontario written by Zachary R. W. Hoegy and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest health is impacted greatly by fungi, particularly those that cause disease in living trees. By examining genetic diversity within populations of pathogenic fungi and their patterns of colonization it is possible to gain a greater understanding of host-pathogen interactions. Two common pathogens in the boreal forest are Onnia tomentosa, causal agent of a root-rot disease in spruce known as stand opening disease, and Phellinus tremulae, causal agent of white heart rot in stems of trembling aspen. Both fungi are members of the Hymenochaetaceae in the Basidiomycota. Two black spruce (Picea mariana) plantations located north of Nipigon were examined for Onnia tomentosa. Spatial coordinates of 124 basidiomata were taken, and the basidiomata collected from plots that had received different commercial thinning treatments. Using extracted DNA from each of the basidiomata, it was possible to measure genetic diversity and consequently genet size. One hundred and sixteen genetically distinct individuals were found suggesting that the majority of the basidiomata represented unique genets. The distribution pattern was mapped. Stand thinning appears to negatively impact colonization of spruce by O. tomentosa compared with that observed in unthinned control stands. In an ancillary study, a stand of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) located at Silver Mountain (74 km SW of Thunder Bay) was examined for Phellinus tremulae. Four infected trees were harvested and each stem cut into 50 cm sections with the top 5 cm from each section removed as a cookie. From each cookie, isolations of P. tremulae were made onto agar media and somatic compatibility techniques were utilized to determine size and distribution of genets in each tree. Two trees contained two genets of P. tremulae, one tree contained a single genet, while the remaining tree failed to yield any isolations of P. tremulae at all.

Book excerpt: Tropical mycology is attracting increasing interest, as the key role of fungi in tropical ecosystems and as pathogens becomes appreciated. This book is the first of two complementary volumes (Volume 2 covers Micromycetes) produced from papers given at the British Mycological Society's symposium held in Liverpool in April 2000. It describes the ecology, biology, economic dimensions and systematics of tropical Macromycetes. Written by leading experts in their field, the papers have been thoroughly edited and revised.

Book Ecology of Macrofungi

  • Author : Kandikere R. Sridhar
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2023-12-01
  • ISBN : 1003828825
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Ecology of Macrofungi written by Kandikere R. Sridhar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macrofungi have significant importance in human health, particularly in nutrition, medicine, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and industries. They occupy a variety of ecosystems such as terrestrial (agricultural lands, forests and deserts), freshwater (bogs and marshes) and maritime (mangroves and coastal sand dunes) habitats. Their ecosystem services like nutrition (humans and animals), medicinal pursuits (antibiotics and pharmaceuticals) and bioremediation (degradation of xenobiotics and insect control) potential are dependent on their diversity and ecological conditions. Macrofungal ecology serves as the basis for nutraceutical values, agricultural benefits, plant productivity, environmental protection and industrially valued biocomposites. This book focuses on various aspects of macrofungal distribution in diverse habitats, participation in organic matter decomposition, ectomycorrhizal associations and participation in biogeochemical cycles. This book reviews the current developments in macrofungal ecology in different habitats and their benefits. Due to the topics dealt with on macrofungal diversity, distribution, dynamics, lifestyles, ecosystem or substrate preferences and ecosystem services, this book is valuable to mycologists, botanists, zoologists, ecologists, foresters, geneticists, agronomists and field biologists.

Book Ethnobiology of Uzbekistan

Download or read book Ethnobiology of Uzbekistan written by Olim K. Khojimatov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 1486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural resources and associated biological diversity provide the basis of livelihood for humans, particularly in rural areas and mountain regions around the world. Over centuries, indigenous peoples, traditional societies and local communities have developed their own specific knowledge regarding plant use, management, and conservation. The history of plant use by humans as food and to treat diverse ailments dates back to ancient civilizations. Even though the advent of allopathic medicine has somehow minimized the role of medicinal plants in favor of synthetic drugs, a number of modern drug discoveries have been based on medicinal plants used by indigenous peoples. Ethnobiology is the burgeoning interdisciplinary scientific field which covers all sorts of interactions between plants and people, and Central Asia is recognized as a plant diversity hot spot. The mountains and valleys of this region are rich in unique medicinal and food plant species. Local communities residing in the mountain regions of Central Asia possess unique knowledge of surrounding resources, which is the result of many years of interaction with and selection of the most desirable and pervasive plant species present. In this context, this book provides comprehensive information on cross-culture variation in the traditional uses of plants, fungi, and animal species as food, medicine, and for cultural purposes among the diverse communities of Uzbekistan. The key areas of focus include plant diversity in Uzbekistan, cross cultural variation in traditional uses of plant species, high-value medicinal and food plant species, and threats and conservation status of plant species and traditional knowledge
