Book excerpt: During the past few decades, dating back to the 1970s, success on the offensive side of the football has been predicated on a handful of fundamental and foundational concepts. As the years have passed, more emphasis and weight has been placed on the passing game through a variety of advanced strategies. The past 30 to 40 years have been witness to an array of innovative offensive methodologies affording the world of football a diverse spectrum of approaches comprised of various brands, styles, and trademarks when discussing football offense. Throughout the 1970s we saw the universal implementation of traditional option and veer offenses, all leveraging powerful ground attacks with the passing game acting in a supporting, ancillary role. In the 1980s, the Pro-I offense was used on a widespread basis while the west-coast offense was introduced with tremendous efficacy and popularity. By the end of the decade, numerous one-back systems were implemented at all levels of football. As the decade of the 1990s opened, the run-and-shoot offense surfaced, producing some of the most prolific quarterbacks, backs, and receivers in the history of the game. And, in the past 15-20 years, shovel-pass, zone-read, and hurry-up systems of offensive football have become ubiquitous standards throughout all tiers of the game. Whatever style of offense coaches and teams utilize and implement, a handful of key building blocks remain the foundational base for any successful football program. Further, a core nucleus of underlying concepts underpin the ability of a coaching staff when designing, teaching, implementing, and assessing today's complex and sophisticated offensive structures. These building blocks and concepts have remained consistent throughout the decades, from three-back power sets to spread formations, from triple-option schemes of the 1970s to contemporary zone-read schemes, and from ball-control west-coast offense systems to today's no-huddle hurry-up brand. No matter the official brand, title, style, or type of offensive system implemented, success on the offensive side of the ball manifests through a rigid football paradigm involving a tightly defined ideology of gridiron concepts and structures.

Book Mind and Matter

Download or read book Mind and Matter written by John Urschel and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller John Urschel, mathematician and former offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, tells the story of a life balanced between two passions For John Urschel, what began as an insatiable appetite for puzzles as a child developed into mastery of the elegant systems and rules of mathematics. By the time he was thirteen, Urschel was auditing a college-level calculus course. But when he joined his high school football team, a new interest began to eclipse the thrill he felt in the classroom. Football challenged Urschel in an entirely different way, and he became addicted to the physical contact of the sport. After he accepted a scholarship to play at Penn State, his love of math was rekindled. As a Nittany Lion, he refused to sacrifice one passion for the other. Against the odds, Urschel found a way to manage his double life as a scholar and an athlete. While he was an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, he simultaneously pursued his PhD in mathematics at MIT. Weaving together two separate narratives, Urschel relives for us the most pivotal moments of his bifurcated life. He explains why, after Penn State was sanctioned for the acts of former coach Jerry Sandusky, he declined offers from prestigious universities and refused to abandon his team. He describes his parents’ different influences and their profound effect on him, and he opens up about the correlation between football and CTE and the risks he took for the game he loves. Equally at home discussing Georg Cantor’s work on infinities and Bill Belichick’s playbook, Urschel reveals how each challenge—whether on the field or in the classroom—has brought him closer to understanding the two different halves of his own life, and how reason and emotion, the mind and the body, are always working together. “So often, people want to divide the world into two,” he observes. “Matter and energy. Wave and particle. Athlete and mathematician. Why can’t something (or someone) be both?”

Book excerpt: The scouting and game-preparation processes are conceivably the least exposed and least understood phases of the aggregate football program as it pertains to the general knowledge of the public and the average football aficionado. Supposition and conjecture suggest and imply few individuals, including the most dedicated of football fans, are aware of the time commitment, involvement, depth, and detail comprising the processes of film study, tendency analysis, statistical comparisons, producing the scouting report, computer-software applications, complex digital and video mechanisms, and personnel evaluation. Suffice to say - scouting and game-preparation methods are central to the success of today's football program through the leveraging of innovative technologies, computer software, data analysis, and database management. The ability to appropriately evaluate personnel, assess play-calling tendencies, coordinate large databases of statistics, and analyze various football schemes are all central tenets of the scouting process.

Book excerpt: The quarterback position is more important, crucial, and integral to the ultimate success of the football team than ever before. Although the quarterback position has always mandated intrinsic leadership and athletic qualities substantially differentiating the position from other athletes and positions on the football team, today's young quarterback must possess a broad and profound spectrum of skills to uniquely satisfy the requirements of the position; leadership, studiousness, concentration, focus, supreme athletic talent, running capacities, accuracy, efficiency, discipline, dedication, willpower, loyalty, humility, modesty, pride, ethics, morals, and trustworthiness are all traits and characteristics comprising the complete skill set of today's successful and championship-level quarterback. Today's versatile, intricate, and sophisticated offensive zone-read and passing schemes demand the quarterback to possess mobility, the ability to read and understand defensive fronts and coverages, combined with the traditional and conventional capacities to execute foundational drop-back and play-action schemes coupled with the ability to deliver accurate throws downfield. At its purest and most basic form, coaching and playing quarterback still revolves and centers around the passing game, especially with respect to the significant advancements made throughout the years with all aspects of football offense.

Defense is an integral key when formulating success for the football team and is one ingredient comprising a three-part recipe when actuating short- and long-term football success: 1)Offense. 2)Defense. 3)Special Teams. Of the three primary phases of football, defense is the most rudimentary in its design, approach, and strategy. Defense, quite simply, drills down to the core fundamentals and underlying concepts of football - hitting, tackling, aggressiveness, intensity, tenacity, and toughness. While there are specific alignments, fronts, coverages, shades, gaps, stunts, dogs, blitzes, and rotations a defensive staff can implement strategically, at its foundational level, defense is defined by speed, ferocity, violence, a willingness to hit the opponent, physical intimidation, flying to the ball, gang tackling, and getting after the opposition with an extreme level of intensity. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FACT: During the 2017 football season, 1 million fewer fans per game watched the NFL on television compared to the year before. Stadiums around the league were partially empty, ticket sales declined, popularity waned, corporate sponsors pulled their ads, and countless lifelong NFL fans were driven away from the game and alienated from the league they once loved. Is this the end of the NFL as we know it? Can the NFL win back its fans? Will the NFL survive? Is this the downfall of the NFL? Head football coach and award-winning author, Mike Lowry, takes a hard-hitting approach to the issues on and off the field impacting the NFL, consequently causing the league to lose millions of fans and viewers. Mr. Lowry leverages a lifetime of football experience when presenting a no-nonsense examination of the NFL, its commissioner, its players, its owners, and how social issues, player protests, transformative rule changes, and unprecedented political activism are in the process of permanently destroying professional football while driving away millions of loyal and diehard fans. Not only does Mr. Lowry document a host of extreme problems currently plaguing the league but in addition, he outlines an array of remedial measures to restore the game to its pure essence while preserving football's remarkable American tradition. Regardless of your personal stance concerning the NFL, its players, its owners, and its commissioner, no contemporary discussion of football is complete without consideration to the unique perspective and insight presented in PhD Football's Downfall of the NFL. Through a meticulous blitz of football information, Mr. Lowry's 6th volume in the PhD Football series is a MUST-READ for any football fan and documents for you what no one else will tell you about the NFL and its potential demise.

Book Football and Migration

Download or read book Football and Migration written by Richard Elliott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Football is an incredibly powerful case study of globalization and an extremely useful lens through which to study and understand contemporary processes of international migration. This is the first book to focus on the increasingly complex series of migratory processes that contour the contemporary game, drawing on multi-disciplinary approaches from sociology, history, geography and anthropology to explore migration in football in established, emerging and transitional contexts. The book examines shifting migration patterns over time and across space, and analyses the sociological dynamics that drive and influence those patterns. It presents in-depth case studies of migration in elite men’s football, exploring the role of established leagues in Europe and South America as well as important emerging leagues on football's frontier in North America and Asia. The final section of the book analyses the movement of groups who have rarely been the focus of migration research before, including female professional players, elite youth players, amateur players and players’ families, drawing on important new research in Ghana, England, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Few other sports have such a global reach and therefore few other sports are such an important location for cross-cultural research and insight across the social sciences. This book is engaging reading for any student or scholar with an interest in sport, sociology, human geography, migration, international labour flows, globalization, development or post-colonial studies.

Book Not for Long

Download or read book Not for Long written by Robert W. Turner II and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NFL is the most popular professional sports league in the United States. Its athletes receive multimillion-dollar contracts and almost endless media attention. The league's most important game, the Super Bowl, is practically a national holiday. Making it to the NFL, however, is not about the promised land of fame and fortune. Robert W. Turner II draws on his personal experience as a former professional football player as well as interviews with more than 140 current and former NFL players to reveal what it means to be an athlete in the NFL and explain why so many players struggle with life after football. Without guaranteed contracts, the majority of players are forced out of the league after a few seasons. Over three-quarters of retirees experience bankruptcy or financial ruin, two-thirds live with chronic pain, and too many find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Robert W. Turner II argues that the fall from grace of so many players is no accident. The NFL, he contends, powerfully determines their experiences in and out of the league. The labor agreement provides little job security and few health and retirement benefits, and the owners refuse to share power with the players, making change difficult. And the process of becoming an elite football player--from high school to college and through the pros--leaves athletes with few marketable skills and little preparation for their first Sunday off the field. With compassion and objectivity, Not for Long reveals the life and mind of high school, college, and NFL athletes, shedding light on what might best help players transition successfully out of the sport.

Book Football s Great War

Download or read book Football s Great War written by Alexander Jackson and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As modern football grapples with the implications of a global crisis, this book looks at first in the game’s history: The First World War. The game’s structure and fabric faced existential challenges as fundamental questions were asked about its place and value in English society. This study explores how conflict reshaped the People’s Game on the English Home Front. The wartime seasons saw football's entire commercial model challenged and questioned. In 1915, the FA banned the payment of players, reopening a decades-old dispute between the game's early amateur values and its modern links to the world of capital and lucrative entertainment. Wartime football forced supporters to consider whether the game should continue, and if so, in what form? Using an array of previously unused sources and images, this book explores how players, administrators and fans grappled with these questions as daily life was continually reshaped by the demands of total war. From grassroots to elite football, players to spectators, gambling to charity work, this study examines the social, economic and cultural impact of what became Football's Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era when college football coaches frequently command higher salaries than university presidents, many call for reform to restore the balance between amateur athletics and the educational mission of schools. This book traces attempts at college athletics reform from 1855 through the early twenty-first century while analyzing the different roles played by students, faculty, conferences, university presidents, the NCAA, legislatures, and the Supreme Court. Pay for Play: A History of Big-Time College Athletic Reform also tackles critically important questions about eligibility, compensation, recruiting, sponsorship, and rules enforcement. Discussing reasons for reform--to combat corruption, to level the playing field, and to make sports more accessible to minorities and women--Ronald A. Smith candidly explains why attempts at change have often failed. Of interest to historians, athletic reformers, college administrators, NCAA officials, and sports journalists, this thoughtful book considers the difficulty in balancing the principles of amateurism with the need to draw income from sporting events.
