I must, however, thank Miss A. M. Wakefield and Mr. T. Walter Hall for information and advice on definite points, and Dr. A. J. Greenish and Mr. J. W. Ivimey for much aid in the further ance of my general scheme. In addition I must record my obligations to Mr. H. B. But it must be observed that neither Mr. Dickin nor any one else who has helped me is in any way responsible for the views and opinions I have expressed. For them I alone am responsible, and all the blame for their shortcomings must fall on my head. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of Music in England Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Music in England Classic Reprint written by Ernest Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Music in England The purpose of this book is to sketch the main features of English music from its earliest artistic manifestations to the close of the nineteenth century. I use the term English in default of any other that is more exactly comprehensive; but the chapter on folk-music will be found to contain refer ences to the melodies of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, as well as to those of England itself. And, further, I have taken 'english music' to include 'music made in England', not solely music composed by Englishmen to adopt the latter signification alone would, I thought, in dealing with a country where foreign in uences have played a large part, have unduly limited the scope of the book, and I have in fact, for practical purposes, considered as Englishmen those composers who, though of foreign blood, have made England their home and have produced for an English public all the works bywhich their name survives. Of these the greatest is of course Handel, who, as a naturalized Englishman who spent over forty-five years of his life in this country, has justly won a place in the Dictionary of National Biography; I have disregarded the few works he wrote for Italian and German audiences, but it seemed im possible to avoid treatment of the others, especially as their in uence here has been so colossal. Book The Story of British Music

Download or read book The Story of British Music written by Frederick James Crowest and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of British Music: From the Earliest Times to the Tudor Period This is an attempt to tell the story of British music. Wide and comprehensive as the scope of English literature undoubtedly is, we have hitherto been without a book dealing specifically with the birth and growth of English music. Histories of music almost rival the planets in number, but they are for the most part singularly unlike the heavenly bodies in the light they throw upon that aspect of the divine art concerning which every Briton would naturally desire information - namely, the history of the music of his own country. I know of no work which deals at all adequately with the rise and progress of the art as found and practised in England, the nearest attempt at anything of the kind being the late Sir Frederick A. Gore Ouseley's brief, and necessary, additions to Naumann's 'History of Music.' Yet the subject of England's music deserves ample treatment. To remedy such a state of things, I several years back devoted my attention to the present work, the first instalment of which is now given to the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Musical Guide, Vol. 1 The Stories of the Operas are told here in the only way in which, surely, they should be told; yet strangely enough, the only way in which, so far as the Editor can find, they have never been told; and that is by telling the story as it is unfolded on the stage, not by acts and by scenes only, but by the entrances and exits and by the principal songs. The pronunciations of the names of the operas in different languages, and of the characters, have also been given, also the dates and casts of the first productions. Book The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage Musical

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage Musical written by Robert Gordon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 1001 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stage musical constitutes a major industry not only in the US and the UK, but in many regions of the world. Over the last four decades many countries have developed their own musical theatre industries, not only by importing hit shows from Broadway and London but also by establishing or reviving local traditions of musical theatre. In response to the rapid growth of musical theatre as a global phenomenon, The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage Musical presents new scholarly approaches to issues arising from these new international markets. The volume examines the stage musical from theoretical and empirical perspectives including concepts of globalization and consumer culture, performance and musicological analysis, historical and cultural studies, media studies, notions of interculturalism and hybridity, gender studies, and international politics. The thirty-three essays investigate major aspects of the global musical, such as the dominance of Western colonialism in its early production and dissemination, racism and sexism--both in representation and in the industry itself--as well as current conflicts between global and local interests in postmodern cultures. Featuring contributors from seventeen countries, the essays offer informed insider perspectives that reflect the diversity of the subject and offer in-depth examinations of specific cultural and economic systems. Together, they conduct penetrating comparative analysis of musical theatre in different contexts as well as a survey of the transcultural spread of musicals.

Book A Short History of English Music Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of English Music It is an attempt to give a simple and rational, though in a volume of this size, necessarily incomplete, account of events that have led to the complex state of music existing in England at the present time. Should it offer nothing to the musician or historian, I hope it will be found of interest to the general reader. The desire to make each chapter as complete, on the subject with which it deals, as space would permit, has necessitated a certain amount of repetition, but I trust that the object will con done the fault. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music and Nationalism: A Study of English Opera To those who are familiar with the broad paths of Musical History, and more particularly with that narrow byway, English Opera, this book may seem to call, perhaps not for an apology, but at any rate for an explanation. So far as I am aware, no book has been wholly devoted either to giving an account of the forces which have influenced the Musical Stage in England, or even to drawing up that catalogue of Operatic names, dates, and places which, with a few personal likes and dis likes, generally does duty in this country for a serious aesthetic. It is as a first attempt to fill the former gap that this book has been written. My original intention was merely to mark what I may call the high and low-water marks of our English Operatic activity. But, in trying to bring them into some sort of co-ordination with our other national activities, so many difficulties arose, so many perplexing and apparently inexplicable phenomena came to light, that I was compelled to go outside the narrow limits which I had set myself and to study the more general relationships of National life and Musical Productivity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years of Musical Life in London: 1870 1900 My object is rather to furnish sketches of ia mous musical personages, and to set before the reader hitherto unrecorded scenes and events in their lives, together with slight studies of tem perament and character, which may be of value in so far as they tend to throw a side - light upon the personality of the notable individuals with whom they deal. At the same time, by placing these as nearly as possible in chronological order, and supplementing them with brief accounts of all the prominent debuts and first performances that I have personally witnessed, the outcome is a tolerably complete picture of operatic and musical life in England during the last three decades of the nineteenth century. Book Music and Identity in Postcolonial British South Asian Literature

Download or read book Music and Identity in Postcolonial British South Asian Literature written by Christin Hoene and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of music in British-South Asian postcolonial literature, asking how music relates to the construction of postcolonial identity. It focuses on novels that explore the postcolonial condition in India, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom: Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy, Amit Chaudhuri's Afternoon Raag, Suhayl Saadi's Psychoraag, Hanif Kureishi's The Buddha of Suburbia and The Black Album, and Salman Rushdie's The Ground Beneath Her Feet, with reference to other texts, such as E.M. Forster's A Passage to India and Vikram Seth's An Equal Music. The analyzed novels feature different kinds of music, from Indian classical to non-classical traditions, and from Western classical music to pop music and rock 'n' roll. Music is depicted as a cultural artifact and as a purely aestheticized art form at the same time. As a cultural artifact, music derives meaning from its socio-cultural context of production and serves as a frame of reference to explore postcolonial identities on their own terms. As purely aesthetic art, music escapes its contextual meaning. The transgressive qualities of music render it capable of expressing identities irrespective of origin and politics of location. Thereby, music in the novels marks a very productive space to imagine the postcolonial nation and to rewrite imperial history, to express the cultural hybridity of characters in-between nations, to analyze the state of the nation and life in the multicultural diaspora of contemporary Great Britain, and to explore the ramifications of cultural globalization versus cultural imperialism. It will be a useful research and teaching tool for those interested in postcolonial literature, music studies, cultural studies, contemporary literature and South-Asian literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musical Instruments: With Numerous Woodcuts Music, in however primitive a stage of development it may be with some nations, is universally appreciated as one of the Fine Arts. The origin of vocal music may have been coeval with that of language; and the construction of musical instruments evidently dates with the earliest inventions which suggested themselves to human ingenuity. There exist even at the present day some savage tribes in Australia and South America who, although they have no more than the five first numerals in their language and are thereby unable to count the fingers of both hands together, nevertheless possess musical instruments of their own contrivance, with which they accompany their songs and dances. Wood, metal, and the hide of animals, are the most common substances used in the construction of musical instruments. In tropical countries bamboo or some similar kind of cane and gourds are especially made use of for this purpose. The ingenuity of man has contrived to employ in producing music, horn, bone, glass, pottery, slabs of sonorous stone, - in fact, almost all vibrating matter. The strings of instruments have been made of the hair of animals, of silk, the runners of creeping plants, the fibrous roots of certain trees, of cane, catgut (which absurdly referred to the cat, is from the sheep, goat, lamb, camel, and some other animals), metal, &c.
