Download or read book Phases of Animal Life Past and Present Classic Reprint written by Richard Lydekker and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phases of Animal Life, Past and Present The following Essays are, by the kind permission of the Editor, reproduced from Knowledge, with some emendations, and a few additional illustrations. They are intended to illustrate in a popular manner a few of the various modes in which animals - especially vertebrates - are adapted to similar conditions of existence; and also to demonstrate some of the more remarkable types of structure obtaining among the higher vertebrates. It will be found that while some of the Essays form a continuous series, others are totally unconnected with those to which they stand in juxtaposition. While living forms are by no means neglected, especial attention is concentrated on the less known, strange, and often gigantic creatures which have now passed away for ever, and are revealed to us - it may be but obscurely - only by their dry bones. The series has, the author flatters himself, met with a favourable reception in its original form; and he trusts that it may obtain at least equal approval in its present guise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Animals, Vol. 1: The Animal Life of the World in Its Various Aspects and Relations The Introduction fully explains the plan of the work, and the lines which have been adopted in writing it, and books to which the Author is specially indebted are either mentioned in the text, or included in a special list at the end. It is both mentally and physically impossible for one zoologist to know at first hand more than a small part of his subject, and for this reason full quotations, in preference to mere paraphrases, have been taken from the writings of many distinguished specialists, the sources in such cases being always indicated. Book Popular Natural History Vol 1

Download or read book Popular Natural History Vol 1 written by J. S. Kingsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Natural History, Vol. 1: A Description of Animal Life, From the Lowest Forms Up to Man IT has been the endeavor, in the preparation of these volumes, to present a popular account of Animal Life; but while scientific techni calities have been carefully kept in the background, it is hoped that scientific accuracy has not been sacrificed in the operation. To some there may appear an inequality in treatment. This, in part at least, has been intentional. Insects and Birds have already an enormous popular literature, while the other forms have been more or less neg lected. Believing that these other animals have their points Of interest and claims upon our attention, they have been given a prominence poissibly greater than they deserve. Another feature in these pages has been the collection of bits of unnatural history from the pages of the older writers. These have of course no place in our present science, but they belong to the history of zoology, and as such, have no small value, aside from their interest as scientific curiosities. It is hardly necessary to call attention to the fact that there is another Side to the animal kingdom which is fully as interesting and attractive as that presented here. In the last twenty years zoology has taken a new departure and a new lease of life. NO longer are zoologists content with watching the habits of well-known animals, and imposing long Latin names on those which are new. Museums are no longer necessary for the better class of work. To-day the student is trying to solve deeper problems. He is finding out how all animals grow from the egg to the adult condition; he is tracing resemblances, rather than difierences, and showmg the. Essential unity of all life, however great the apparent differences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Animal Life and Human Progress Classic Reprint

Download or read book Animal Life and Human Progress Classic Reprint written by Arthur Dendy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Life and Human Progress It may at least be claimed for the lectures that they represent the latest views upon matters with which they deal. If these views appear in some cases to be subversive of modern biological doctrine it must be remembered that biological thought is progressive; were it otherwise the claims of bio logical science to a foremost place in our educational system might well be considered questionable. The doctrine of Organic Evolution, for example, looms large in several of the lectures, and a certain advance is to be observed from the position held by Charles Darwin and his immediate followers. The foundations of this doctrine, however, remain unshaken, and it is only the superstructure which has been, perhaps too hastily, erected upon them that is being more or less recon structed in accordance with recent investigations. The unexpectedly large audiences which were attracted to the lectures, and the great interest evinced in them at the time of delivery, seem to justify the hope that in their present form they may appeal to an even larger circle. Book Sketches of Animal Life and Habits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of Animal Life and Habits Classic Reprint written by ANDREW. WILSON and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Animal Life and Habits The present series of Sketches has been compiled with the view of affording general readers, and especially the young, some popular and yet trustworthy ideas regarding some of the most interesting groups of the animal world. The work may in fact be regarded as a natural history text-book adapted for use in Nature's school at large, and as a guide to the use of the observant powers, through the due exer cise of which all true ideas of Nature are acquired. Some of the Sketches have already appeared in Chambers's Journal, and are reprinted here with some additions, and with such alterations as were found to be necessary in adapting them for volume-form. The papers lay no claim to originality; but the day of grave errors in popular scien tific works is not yet past, and the author would fain hope that the Sketches may at least be found to possess the merit of correctness. The highest purpose this little work may serve is, that of fostering a love for the personal and direct observation of Nature. Knowledge so acquired invariably brings its own reward in the power it confers of discerning higher aspects in all the workes of Nature.' And as a result of such studies, we may say with Wordsworth of the most commonplace object around. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Zoology: An Elementary d104-Book Treating of the Structure, Life, History, and Relations of Animals The subject matter has been so treated as to adapt the book to schools giving either a half or whole year to the study of zoology. Those preferring it can begin the study with the Protozoa and proceed to the higher forms, instead of=following the order given in the text, as the chapters in Parts I and II are so written as to be largely independent of each other. Teachers having only a half year for Zoology will perhaps find it wise to omit certain chapters in order that the time which ought to be spent in studying the animals shall not be devoted to the study of the book. It is not expected that most schools will be able to give careful attention to all the subjects treated, but the numerous forms and phases of animal life have been presented in order to allow some choice on the part of the teacher desiring to emphasize special features of zoological study.
