Book America s National Game

Download or read book America s National Game written by Albert G. Spalding and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in great demand by baseball enthusiasts. Having been connected with every department of the game from player to magnate, Mr. Spalding has contributed a very important work to the game's history. As the invincible pitcher of the Boston Club, previous to the formation of the National League, his book of so many pages is an interesting record of events dating from the beginning of the great American pastime. It is not exactly a history of the game, but deals largely with incidents during the author's career, who was a player in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and helped organize the National League in 1876. One chapter, devoted to sundry topics, gives an account of the sale of the immortal "King Kelly," the original "$10,000 beauty," by Chicago to the Boston Club in the late 1880s. Other Chapters are devoted to the literature of the game, quoting several instances of the baseball paragrapher's art and also specimens of the distinct poetry of the pastime, of which "Casey at the Bat" is probably the most widely known. The Cincinnati Red Stockings Mr. Spalding gives credit as being the pioneer professional organization. It was not, however, until 1871 that professional baseball playing, as recognized today, was instituted. Mr. Spalding shows how cricket could not do for Americans. He says it is suitable for the British temperament, but not for the Yankee hustling spirit. He also tells how he worked into the game through a one-handed catch when a small boy. To lovers of baseball, whose name is legion, and whose number increases yearly, this book comprises in itself a whole library of useful information.

Book excerpt: What could an omnipresent and seemingly omnipotent entity want with a humble pot-healer? Or with the dozens of other odd creatures it has lured to Plowman's Planet? And if the Glimmung is a god, are its ends positive or malign? Combining quixotic adventure, spine-chilling horror, and deliriously paranoid theology, Galactic Pot-Healer is a uniquely Dickian voyage to alternate worlds of the imagination.

Book The Post Darwinian Controversies

Download or read book The Post Darwinian Controversies written by James R. Moore and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-10-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Post-Darwinian Controversies offers an original interpretation of Protestant responses to Darwin after 1870, viewing them in a transatlantic perspective and as a constitutive part of the history of post-Darwinian evolutionary thought. The impact of evolutionary theory on the religious consciousness of the nineteenth century has commonly been seen in terms of a 'conflict' or 'warfare' between science and theology. Dr. Moore's account begins by discussing the polemical origins and baneful effects of the 'military metaphor', and this leads to a revised view of the controversies based on an analysis of the underlying intellectual struggle to come to terms with Darwin. The middle section of the book distinguishes the 'Darwinism' of Darwin himself amid the main currents of post-Darwinian evolutionary thought, and is followed by chapters which examine the responses to Darwin of twenty-eight Christian controversialists, tracing the philosophical and theological lineage of their views. The paradox that emerges - that Darwin's theory was accepted in substance only by those whose theology was distinctly orthodox theology and of other evolutionary theories with liberal and romantic theological speculation.

Book Henry George s Legacy in Economic Thought

Download or read book Henry George s Legacy in Economic Thought written by John Laurent and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry George's Progress and Poverty sold more than 3 million copies by the time of its 50th anniversary in 1929 - outselling all other works on economics - yet today economics students can complete their courses without ever having heard of the author's name. This collection redresses this neglect, by presenting a range of perspectives on Henry George's fertile ideas which, it is increasingly argued, merit revisiting in terms of their capacity to contribute towards solutions to current problems including runaway land values, nationalization of land, monopoly control of public assets and environmental degradation. The book also discusses George's significant theoretical contributions, including the 'Henry George Theorem' - named after him by two Nobel prize winning economists - and important insights bearing on the relation of evolutionary theory to economics. The authors also discuss George's powerful influence on the economic development of Australia and New Zealand, and the affinity he felt for these countries is also considered. Henry George's Legacy in Economic Thought will appeal in particular to upper level students and scholars of the history of economic thought and the public sector but also to economists more widely.
