Book Phase Conjugation and Pulse Compression of High Energy Lasers

Download or read book Phase Conjugation and Pulse Compression of High Energy Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SBS phase conjugation is playing a crucial role in the scaling of solid state laser systems to high average power. Amplifier systems with near diffraction limited beam quality have been demonstrated with average power outputs of 100W in Nd:glass and Nd:YAG. Wavefront correction provided by an SBS phase conjugate mirror not only significantly lowers the output divergence of the laser, it also increases the maximum average power obtainable by preventing damage to optical components caused by distortion of the beam profile due to uncorrected thermally induced aberrations. The output pulsewidth format required for applications of high average power pulsed solid state lasers is extremely varied, ranging from below a nanosecond to many microseconds. However, most demonstrated applications of SBS phase conjugation to high average power laser systems have involved the amplification of typical Q-switched oscillator pulses of 7--30 ns in duration. Based on the requirements imposed by specific applications for high average power solid state laser systems, we have investigated and demonstrated the operation of SBS phase conjugated amplifier systems with output pulsewidths ranging from 1 ns to 1 [mu]s. The specific considerations for the various pulsewidth regimes as well as details of the experimental investigations will be presented.

Book Phase Conjugation of High Energy Lasers

Download or read book Phase Conjugation of High Energy Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report we explore claims that phase conjugation of high energy lasers by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) can compensate optical aberrations associated with severely distorted laser amplifier media and aberrations induced by the atmosphere. The SBS media tested was a gas cell pressurized up to 300 psi with SF6 or Xe or both. The laser was a 10 Hz, 3J, Q-switched Nd:YAG with 25 ns wide pulses. Atmospheric aberrations were created with space heaters, helium jets and phase plates designed with a Kolmogorov turbulence spectrum characterized by a Fried parameter, ro, ranging from 0.6 - 6.0 mm. Phase conjugate tests in the laboratory were conducted without amplification. For the strongest aberrations, D/ro ~ 20, created by combining the space heaters with the phase plate, the Strehl ratio was degraded by a factor of ~50. Phase conjugation in SF6 restored the peak focusable intensity to about 30% of the original laser. Phase conjugate tests at the outdoor laser range were conducted with laser amplifiers providing gain in combination with the SBS cell. A large 600,000 BTU kerosene space heater was used to create turbulence along the beam path. An atmospheric structure factor of Cn2 = 5x10-13 m2/3 caused the illumination beam to expand to a diameter 250mm and overfill the receiver. The phase conjugate amplified return could successfully be targeted back onto glints 5mm in diameter. Use of a lenslet arrays to lower the peak focusable intensity in the SBS cell failed to produce a useful phase conjugate beam; The Strehl ratio was degraded with multiple random lobes instead of a single focus. I will review literature results which show how multiple beams can be coherently combined by SBS when a confocal reflecting geometry is used to focus the laser in the SBS cell.

Book Phase Conjugation Scaling for High Energy Lasers

Download or read book Phase Conjugation Scaling for High Energy Lasers written by Robert W. Hellwarth and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase conjugation of both continuous and pulsed 10.6 micron lasers by stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBB) has been attempted. Because of various technical difficulties, conclusive evidence of SBB was not found. However, theoretical studies in this project supported further the promise of SBB for obtaining diffraction-limited beams from high power infrared lasers. Several novel schemes for realizing 10 micron waveguides of several meters length were explored experimentally. Keywords: High energy lasers; Phase conjugation; Stimulated Brillouin scattering; and Infrared waveguides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.

Book Diode Laser Phase Conjugation 03 FS 030 Final Report

Download or read book Diode Laser Phase Conjugation 03 FS 030 Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arrays of lasers are often considered when a need exists to increase laser optical output power, for a variety of purposes. Similarly, individual semiconductor laser-diodes, generating 0.01-1.0 W each, are commonly placed in arrays in order to increase total optical power onto targeted objects. Examples of such usage are diode-laser pump arrays for solid-slab heat-capacity lasers, laser arrays for heat-treating materials, and arrays for efficient solid state laser systems. The commercial and defense communities also use such arrays for many applications from laser range-finders, laser designators, to laser machining systems, etc. However, the arraying process does not automatically increase ''focusable'' light on target (i.e., intensity/steradian). For those applications requiring the highest focusability, it is necessary that the collective output beam from arrays of individual lasers be phase-coherent. Under this condition, the individual laser-element optical outputs are ''fused together'' into a larger area, phase coherent (i.e., all wavefronts are ''in step''), high-power combined beam. The process of joining multiple laser beams together to produce a single coherent wave, is in general very difficult and seldom accomplished. Thus joining together many hundreds to thousands of beams from individual laser-diodes, in large arrays, is still an unsolved problem. There are 2 major reasons for this. Firstly, the phase of each output laser beam (i.e. the wave-fronts) from each laser diode often fluctuates within nanosecond time periods, making a control loop with sufficient bandwidth difficult to build. In fact, phase fluctuations (related to laser linewidth) limit the size of an extended system of arrayed diodes because of speed-of-light restrictions on information flow. Secondly, the output power per prior laser diode has been low (1W,) so that the size, expense, and complexity of control systems for correcting a multitude of output phases of the individual diode lasers in a large array, become prohibitive. Recently, we have been considering ways to use new diode geometries and 4-wave mixing/phase-conjugation technologies to enable large arrays of semiconductor lasers to be phased together to produce large-output-power laser systems, with good beam quality. If the ideas hold up, arrays of 100 to 1 million laser elements might produce 100 W to> 1 Megawatt laser beams. Such systems can have many defense and commercial applications.

Book High Average Power Pulsed Phase Conjugate Laser with Birefringence Correction Revision 1

Download or read book High Average Power Pulsed Phase Conjugate Laser with Birefringence Correction Revision 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nd:YAG rod lasers have been plagued with the inability to go to high average powers because of thermally induced birefringence and focusing. Several methods have been employed to correct for the birefringence and the thermal aberrations of such systems, but place stringent constraints on the laser heads and/or the system alignment. They have developed a scalable Nd: YAG master oscillator/power amplifier (MOPA) laser system which employs a novel phase conjugation scheme to correct both for the material and thermal distortions as well as the thermal birefringence in double pass amplifier systems. This method reduces the double pass depolarization from 42% to less than 2% and is easy to align.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers and electro-optics is a field of research leading to constant breakthroughs. Indeed, tremendous advances have occurred in optical components and systems since the invention of laser in the late 50s, with applications in almost every imaginable field of science including control, astronomy, medicine, communications, measurements, etc. If we focus on lasers, for example, we find applications in quite different areas. We find lasers, for instance, in industry, emitting power level of several tens of kilowatts for welding and cutting; in medical applications, emitting power levels from few milliwatt to tens of Watt for various types of surgeries; and in optical fibre telecommunication systems, emitting power levels of the order of one milliwatt. This book is divided in four sections. The book presents several physical effects and properties of materials used in lasers and electro-optics in the first chapter and, in the three remaining chapters, applications of lasers and electro-optics in three different areas are presented
