Book Microemulsions Structure and Dynamics

Download or read book Microemulsions Structure and Dynamics written by Friberg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the microemulsion phenomenon in a systematic manner and not only provides an up-to-date introduction to this topic but aslo serves as the basis for further development in the area. The progress of microemulsion research has taken place in well-defined stages. The introduction period was founded on Schulman‘s original discovery and was, as expected, focused on the interfacial free energy. Because Schulman obtained his microemulsions from a macroemulsion by the addition of a cosurfactant. The present stage is characterized by an extensively enhanced knowledge about structure and dynamics in these systems. This has led to the realization that the structure of the microemulsions is related both to solutions with critical behaviour and long range order structures, the lyotropic liquid crystals. These two aspects have been elucidated independently by the French groups and by the Lund Spectroscopy group.

Book Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions

Download or read book Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions written by Sow Hsin Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade there has been a renewed interest in research on supramolecular assemblies in solutions, such as micelles and microemulsions, not only because of their extensive applications in industries dealing with catalysts, detergency, biotechnology, and enhanced oil recovery, but also due to the development of new and more powerful experimental and theoretical tools for probing the microscopic behavior of these systems. Prominent among the array of the newly available experimental techniques are photon correlation spectroscopy, small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, and neutron spin-echo and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. On the theoretical side, the traditionally emphasized thermodynamic approach to the study of the phase behavior of self-assembled systems in solutions is gradually being replaced by statistical mechanical studies of semi-micro scopic and microscopic models of the assemblies. Since the statistical mechanical approach demands as its starting point the microscopic struc tural information of the self-assembled system, the experimental determina tion of the structures of micelles and microemulsions becomes of paramount interest. In this regard the scattering techniques mentioned above have played an important role in recent years and will continue to do so in the future. In applying the scattering techniques to the supramolecular species in solution, one cannot often regard the solution to be ideal. This is because the inter-aggregate interaction is often long-ranged since it is coulombic in nature and the interparticle correlations are thus appreciable.

Book Structure and Dynamics of Microemulsions in Bulk at Interfaces and in Confined Geometries Progress Report

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Microemulsions in Bulk at Interfaces and in Confined Geometries Progress Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have been constructing a special purpose small angle neutron scattering spectrometer (SAND) in collaboration with IPNS of Argonne National Laboratory and Texaco Research Laboratories in Beacon, New York. The spectrometer, having a moderate neutron flux, will be uniquely suited for detailed studies of complex fluids in their various phases. This spectrometer will be fully available to general users of the small angle scattering community after a year of testing and upon installation of the auxiliary equipment. The general research objective of the MIT group is to continue studies of the microstructural relationship to phase-behavior in three-component microemulsion systems. Specifically, they shall study the (1) variation of bulk structures when a microemulsion undergoes a non-wetting to wetting transition, (2) correlating interfacial reflectivity measurements of these wetting transitions to the SANS results, (3) use the contrast variation technique they recently developed for measuring the mean and Gaussian curvatures of the surfactant sheet to study the structural inversion of water-in-oil to oil-in-water microemulsions and the transition of disordered bicontinuous microemulsion to ordered lamellar phases, (4) investigation of the effects of spatial confinement on the phase behavior and structure of bicontinuous microemulsions, and finally (5) they shall continue the study of the recently discovered non-exponential relaxation of droplet density fluctuations near the critical and percolation points in water-in-oil droplet microemulsions.

Book Microemulsions Theory and Practice

Download or read book Microemulsions Theory and Practice written by Leon Prince and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microemulsions: Theory and Practice covers the development of the theory and practice of microemulsion systems. This book is divided into seven chapters that explore the physics and chemistry of microemulsions. This book deals first with the commercial history of microemulsions, from the discovery of carnauba wax emulsions to polymer emulsions. This topic is followed by discussions on the theoretical aspects of microemulsion formulation techniques and the design of other products. The subsequent chapter describes the microemulsion formulation with less solubilizer or emulsifier together with their optical properties. A chapter examines the mixed film theory that explains the dispersions, oil-water interface, and inferences in microemulsions. Another chapter considers the role of microemulsions in micellar solutions and their relations to the concentrations of different compounds. This chapter also looks into the association phenomena of three-component phase equilibria diagrams and liquids crystals to microemulsions. The concluding chapter discusses the role of the capillary and hydrostatic forces on the entrapment of oil in the reservoir and the necessary conditions for the displacement of entrapped oil. The important properties and economic aspects of a microemulsion slug required for the tertiary oil recovery are also covered in this chapter.

Book Structure and Dynamics of Strongly Interacting Colloids and Supramolecular Aggregates in Solution

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Strongly Interacting Colloids and Supramolecular Aggregates in Solution written by Sow-Hsin Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, various powerful experimental tools have been developed, such as small angle X-ray and neutron scattering, X-ray and neutron reflection from interfaces, neutron spin-echo spectroscopy and quasi-elastic multiple light scattering and large scale computer simulations. Due to the rapid progress brought about by these techniques, one witnesses a resurgence of interest in the physicochemical properties of colloids, surfactants and macromolecules in solution. Although these disciplines have a long history, they are at present rapidly transforming into a new, interdisciplinary research area generally known as complex liquids or soft condensed matter physics: names that reflect the considerable involvement of the chemical and condensed matter physicists. This book is based on lectures given at a NATO ASI held in the summer of 1991 and discusses these new developments, both in theory and experiment. It constitutes the most up-to-date and comprehensive summary of the entire field.

Book A Guide to Formulation and Application of Low Surfactant Microemulsions in Cleaning Processes

Download or read book A Guide to Formulation and Application of Low Surfactant Microemulsions in Cleaning Processes written by Anna Klemmer and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surfactants were and still are our inconspicuous companions at macroscopic but more often at microscopic scale. Many technologies are only possible due to surfactant applications, which are of constantly growing scientific and industrial interest for approximately 100 years [1]. Hence, since its definition ‘micro emulsion’ by Schulman [2] optically isotropic surfactant formulations and their variations have become a significant part in today’s society. In nowadays’ most popular sector of nanomaterials surfactants are utilised for productions of such via template strategies [3–10]. Organic synthesis benefits from the immensely huge interfacial area of microemulsions resulting in bigger yields which were not possible before [11–21]. Closely related to organic synthesis, pharmaceutical industries enjoy the benefits of drug delivery via e.g. vesicels which play a major role during drug transport into the blood stream [22–27]. Simpler application of surfactants were reported 1984 where cationic surfactants were utilised as stabiliser for antibiotics [28]. Concerning healthier and conscious nutrition microemulsions are applied for reduction of the caloric value of food [29–39]. Also, to contribute to environmental protection exhaust emissions can be reduced by introducing water and surfactants into fuels [40–42]. Surfactant systems or in most cases microemulsions are very adaptable and can therefore be utilised in their most different states. This chapter gives an insightful introduction into the world of microemulsions.

Download or read book Structure And Dynamics Of Materials In The Mesoscopic Domain Proceedings Of The Fourth Royal Society unilever Indo uk Forum In Materials Science And Engineering written by B D Kulkarni and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mesoscopic domain encompasses structures that are best described in terms of the time and length scales which lie between the two extremes of the molecular and the phenomenological description of materials. Important examples of such structures are self-assemblies, emulsions, gels, colloids aggregates and macromolecules networks. Discussing the key advances made in recent years in our understanding of both equilibrium and dynamic aspects of mesoscopic structures, most talks at the conference were given by world class researchers in the field, who included, among others, Prof J S Higgins, CBE, FRS (Imperial College, London), Prof D Frenkel (FOM, Amsterdam), Prof M E Cates (Edinburgh), Prof R C Ball (Warwick), Prof S Ramaswamy (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore), Prof R Pandit (Bangalore), Dr J A Yeomans (Oxford), Prof S Puri (JNU, New Delhi), Dr D Langevin (CRPP, Bordeaux), and Prof W G M Agterof (Unilever Research, Vlaardingen).

Book Properties and Uses of Microemulsions

Download or read book Properties and Uses of Microemulsions written by Desiree Nedra Karunaratne and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Properties and Uses of Microemulsions is intended to provide the reader with some important applications and features of these systems. The intricate composition of microemulsions has made them applicable in many areas such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, oil recovery, chemical synthesis of nanoparticles, and catalysts. An introductory chapter starts off with the description of these applications followed by methods of characterization. Thereafter, a few practical applications of microemulsions focusing on drug delivery, oil recovery, and formation of nanocatalysts are described followed by the third section discussing the theoretical and physical parameters predicting microemulsion properties. The use of spin-polarized paramagnetic probes, bending energetics, and study of self-propelled motion are some of the physical parameters employed to characterize the microemulsions.
