Book Phase Behavior in Pevoh Blends with Solvating Polymers

Download or read book Phase Behavior in Pevoh Blends with Solvating Polymers written by Sevgul Keskin and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study is to show the effects of hydrogen bonding on the phase behavior of Poly-ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol (pEVOH), para-Poly-vinyl-pyridine (pVPy), Poly-nbutyl-methacrylate (pBMA) ternary polymer blends by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy - Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR/ATR). The association model of Painter, Coleman, and co-workers was used to analyze the effect of hydrogen bonding on miscibility of polymer blends containing EVOH. In the work presented here, the main goal was to check the applicability of the association model extended to ternary systems for EVOH/PVPy/PBMA blends and to determine the ability of the theory to predict the ternary miscibility diagram of this system. Miscibility windows at given temperatures are predicted based on the inferred thermodynamics of hydrogen bonding and assumptions about the physical interactions based on the Flory- Huggins model.

Book Double stage Phase Separation in Dynamically Asymmetric Ternary Polymer Blends

Download or read book Double stage Phase Separation in Dynamically Asymmetric Ternary Polymer Blends written by Chen Kuang and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase separation in complex fluids such as polymers has been the subject of several experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. Understanding the phase separation mechanisms and controlling morphological evolution are very important for designing various advanced materials with novel mechanical, optical, electrical, and transport properties. In polymer blends, dynamic asymmetry is induced by a large difference in glass transition temperature. In this work, phase separation behavior of ternary blends of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polyisoprene, PS/PVME/PI, and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/poly(ethyl methacrylate), PS/PVME/PEMA are investigated. Ternary blends of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA exhibit complex phase separation behavior since PS and PVME have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior, while PI and PS (or PVME), PEMA and PS (or PVME) have upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. 2D and 3D phase diagrams for these two ternary systems were plotted by both Flory-Huggins incompressible and regular solution compressible models. Casting the solutions of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA blends form two phase-separated domains in most compositions: (i) PI-rich or PEMA rich, and (ii) PS/PVME-rich. Post-annealing of such samples leads to the second-stage phase separation due to unfavorable interaction of PS and PVME at temperatures about 100°C. Such behavior that is observed for the first time provides a new potential method for making different morphologies with the same system by changing annealing parameters and composition. Washing one polymer at a time using a selective solvent is used to study the morphology of ternary blends. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to study the kinetics and morphology of viscoelastic phase separation (VPS) in ternary blends.

Book Thermodynamics of Polymer Blends Volume I

Download or read book Thermodynamics of Polymer Blends Volume I written by Anatoly E. Nesterov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics is an indispensable tool for developing a large and growing fraction of new polymers and polymer blends. These two volumes show the researcher how thermodynamics can be used to rank polymer pairs in order of immiscibility, including the search for suitable chemical structure of compatibilizers. Because of the great current commercial interest in this most dynamic sector of the polymer industry, there is high interest in studying their physical and mechanical properties, their structures, and the processes of their formation and manufacture. These Books are dedicated to Analysis of the Thermodynamics of Polymer Blends. Thermodynamic behavior of blends determines the compatibility of the components, their morphological features, rheological behavior, and microphase structures. As a result, the most important physical and mechanical characteristics of blends can be identified. The information in these two volumes will be useful to all those involved in polymer research, development, analysis and advanced process engineering.
