Book Practicing Archaeology

Download or read book Practicing Archaeology written by Thomas W. Neumann and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference book addresses the questions and problems of cultural resource archaeology for graduate students and practicing archaeological field workers. Neumann and Sanford use their decades of field experience to discuss in great detail the complex processes involved in conducting a CRM project. Dealing with everything from law to logistics, archival research to zoological analysis, project proposals to report production, they provide an invaluable sourcebook for archaeologists who do contract work in the United States. After introducing the legal and ethical aspects of cultural resources management, the authors describe the processes of designing a proposal and contracting for work, doing background research, conducting assessment, testing, mitigation work (Phase I, II, and III), laboratory analysis, and preparing reports for project sponsors. The volume's emphasis on practical problems, use of extensive examples, and detailed advice on a host of subjects make it an ideal training manual and reference tool for archaeologists and field schools.

Book The Prehistory of Texas

Download or read book The Prehistory of Texas written by Timothy K. Perttula and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleoindians first arrived in Texas more than eleven thousand years ago, although relatively few sites of such early peoples have been discovered. Texas has a substantial post-Paleoindian record, however, and there are more than fifty thousand prehistoric archaeological sites identified across the state. This comprehensive volume explores in detail the varied experience of native peoples who lived on this land in prehistoric times. Chapters on each of the regions offer cutting-edge research, the culmination of years of work by dozens of the most knowledgeable experts. Based on the archaeological record, the discussion of the earliest inhabitants includes a reclassification of all known Paleoindian projectile point types and establishes a chronology for the various occupations. The archaeological data from across the state of Texas also allow authors to trace technological changes over time, the development of intensive fishing and shellfish collecting, funerary customs and the belief systems they represented, long-term changes in settlement mobility and character, landscape use, and the eventual development of agricultural societies. The studies bring the prehistory of Texas Indians all the way up through the Late Prehistoric period (ca. a.d. 700–1600). The extensively illustrated chapters are broadly cultural-historical in nature but stay strongly focused on important current research problems. Taken together, they present careful and exhaustive considerations of the full archaeological (and paleoenvironmental) record of Texas.

Book A PERSISTENT PLACE A LANDSCAPE APPROACH TO THE PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE GREENLEE TRACT IN SOUTHERN OHIO

Download or read book A PERSISTENT PLACE A LANDSCAPE APPROACH TO THE PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE GREENLEE TRACT IN SOUTHERN OHIO written by Matthew Purtill and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-06-23 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term archaeological investigations at the Greenlee Tract by Gray & Pape, Inc., revealed significant evidence for over 10,000 years of Native American utilization of southern Ohio's ancient landscape. Using a siteless landscape approach, this book presents a comprehensive summary of all past work. Various topics are discussed including landscape development, environmental patterns and cycles, settlement patterning and subsistence strategies, and social organization. Several unique archaeological findings are reported upon including the discovery of one of the largest Middle-Late Woodland (A.D. 300-600) villages in the region; the documentation of a rare open-aired, Early Woodland (700 - 100 B.C.) ceremonial structure; and some of the best evidence for Middle Archaic (6500-4000 B.C.) occupation found anywhere in the state. Rarely has such an array of topics been addressed in a single monograph project.

Book Contemporary Lithic Analysis in the Southeast

Download or read book Contemporary Lithic Analysis in the Southeast written by Philip J. Carr and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing work by a mixture of veterans and a new generation of lithic analysts, Contemporary Lithic Analysis in the Southeast explores fresh ideas while reworking and pushing the limits of traditional methods and hypotheses. The variability in the southeastern lithic landscape over space and through time makes it a dynamic and challenging region for archaeologists. Demonstrating a holistic approach and using a variety of methods, this volume aims to derive information regarding prehistoric lifeways from lithic assemblages. The contributors use data from a wide temporal span and a variety of sites across the Southeast, ranging from Texas to South Carolina and from Florida to Kentucky. Not merely cautionary tales, these case studies demonstrate the necessity of looking beyond the bag of lithic material sitting in the laboratory to address the key questions in the organization of prehistoric lithic technologies. How do field-collection strategies bias our interpretations? What is therelationship between technological strategies and tool design? How can inferences regarding social and economic strategies be made from lithic assemblages? Contributors William Andrefsky Jr. / Andrew P. Bradbury / Philip J. Carr / CarolynConklin / D.
