Book The Evolution of Tactical Terrain Data TTD

Download or read book The Evolution of Tactical Terrain Data TTD written by Jeffrey A. Messmore and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, the Army completed a comprehensive study of the known and anticipated digital terrain data requirements of approximately 75 systems/applications. The Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) recognized this digital topographic data requirement in 1985 and indicated that production against this requirement could begin in the early 1990s, once their MK90 Production System was in place. Since its recognition as an Army requirement, TTD has been the subject of Air Force representatives. In Jul 1986, DMA organized a Joint DOD TTD Working Group to serve as a forum to further refine the overall design and characteristics of TTD to better support the multiplicity of intended uses by joint land combat forces in the future. The Army is actively participating in this working group which is addressing data content, format, media, and other related TDD issues. A prototype TTD specification has been defined and DMA is in the process of producing a 15' x 15'; cell that will be completed by the end of this calendar year. This prototype cell will be distributed to DOD, industry, and universities for evaluation. User documentation and a plan for evaluation of the prototype are currently being prepared.

Book Naval Recommendations for DMA s Defense Mapping Agency s Prototype Tactical Terrain Data

Download or read book Naval Recommendations for DMA s Defense Mapping Agency s Prototype Tactical Terrain Data written by John L. Breckenridge and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tactical Terrain Data (TTD) will be utilized by the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps to support various tactical terrain systems and applications, including Mission Planning for Strike Warfare, Amphibious Area Land Management, Communications for Command and Control, Intelligence Data Fusion, and Maneuvering and Fire Support for Command and Control. The Marine Corps will depend directly upon TTD for enhancement of intelligence information to support battlefield operations. The Navy will utilize the TTD for support of amphibious and near-shore operations, as well as facilities engineering and management. The Navy and the Marine Corps are committed to using TTD in support of naval operations involving amphibious and near-shore tactical support. The capability of this data to provide reliable digital terrain information in a format that is usable for naval operations depends greatly upon the Navy's ability to define its long-range terrain data requirements. This naval evaluation of TTD is intended to specify these requirements, to identify deficiencies within the prototype product, and to make formal recommendations to the Defense Mapping Agency on data product improvements, which will ensure optimum support of naval requirements. This report concentrates upon examination of the TTD for its data content, accuracy, resolution, and structure with reference to stated Navy/Marine Corps digital terrain information requirements.

Book Army Digital Terrain Data Requirements

Download or read book Army Digital Terrain Data Requirements written by Regis J. Orsinger and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tactical Terrain Data (TTD) is comprised of data set similar in content, accuracy and resolution to a Class B, 1:50,000 scale topographic map, a 1:50,000 Tactical Terrain Analysis Data Base, and a Marine Combat Chart. TTD will contain unsynthesized and unsymbolized feature and attribute data plus elevation data. Feature and attribute data will include information about the size, shape, location and height of extracted features. The elevation matrix will contain elevation posts every 30 meters referenced to the World Geodetic System. TTD is considered the Army's operational support data base and will meet most user requirements. Special Terrain Data (STD) is comprised of elevation and feature data sets similar to TTD, but is much more detailed and accurate, being roughly equivalent to a 1:12,500 scale topographic map. The Defense Mapping Agency has recognized Army's need for the TTD product, but indicated that STD would be difficult to produce using current and planned production systems at DMA. Higher resolution STD is still required, but new DMA production solutions are needed. Some possibilities at least on an interim basis, include having an Army user employ TTD as a base to establish geometry, best-fit it to higher resolution source material such as the new generations of multispectral imagery, and extract more dense feature data as required.
