Download or read book Incorporation of Environmental Features in Flood Control Channel Projects written by Nelson R. Nunnally and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many negative environmental impacts can be avoided by designing flood channels that are in harmony with other fluvial components, minimizing disruptions to existing fluvial and biological systems, and incorporating environmental features into flood channel design. Environmental features are defined as any structures or actions employed in the planning, design, construction, or maintenance of flood control channels that produce environmental benefits. Environmental features may include modifications of standard techniques, such as selective clearing and snagging or single bank construction; modified channel designs, such as low flow channels, pools and riffles, and meandering alignments; structures for erosion and sediment control, water level management, and instream habitat; inclusion of recreational features in project design; and special designs and treatments for aesthetic purposes. Procedures are presented for the design of environmental features. These procedures are based largely on prior experience with the use of environmental features on modified channels and on fluvial processes and natural stream geometry. Tables are provided to help select the best environmental features based on environmental objectives and stream and watershed conditions.

Download or read book Bio Inspired Innovation and National Security written by National Defense University and published by NDU Press. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the vital importance of the emerging area of biotechnology and its role in defense planning and policymaking, no definitive book has been written on the topic for the defense policymaker, the military student, and the private-sector bioscientist interested in the "emerging opportunities market" of national security. This edited volume is intended to help close this gap and provide the necessary backdrop for thinking strategically about biology in defense planning and policymaking. This volume is about applications of the biological sciences, here called "biologically inspired innovations," to the military. Rather than treating biology as a series of threats to be dealt with, such innovations generally approach the biological sciences as a set of opportunities for the military to gain strategic advantage over adversaries. These opportunities range from looking at everything from genes to brains, from enhancing human performance to creating renewable energy, from sensing the environment around us to harnessing its power.

Download or read book Posttraumatic Stress Disorder written by Gerald Rosen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-11-19 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) an illness that arises after horrific and life-threatening events? Or is it a label that medicalizes human suffering, and brings with it more problems than it solves? Still a relatively new diagnosis, PTSD has changed our vocabulary and shaped our views on human coping and resilience. Yet almost every assumption upon which the diagnosis rests has come under question. In this volume, Gerald Rosen brings together leading international scholars in posttraumatic studies to consider the most contentious debates. Each chapter offers an analysis of the issues, reviews current research, and clarifies implications for the practicing clinician. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Issues and Controversies is essential reading for all practitioners, researchers, and students who work in the field of trauma. Professionals in related health fields and the law will also find this book useful.
