Book Pharmacology of Opioid Peptides

Download or read book Pharmacology of Opioid Peptides written by L F Tseong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-09-01 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is being published at a time when opioid receptors have recently been cloned. The structural characteristics of opioid receptors and the recent advances in their molecular cloning and expression are explicated. Connecting these cloned opioid receptors with the pharmacology of opioid receptor actions is of particular importance. The use of antisense oligodeoxynucleotides to opioid receptors to elucidate the neural mechanisms of opioid action is detailed. As analgesia is one of the most important clinical functions for opioids and opioid peptides, this book concentrates on the detailed mechanisms of action of opioids and opioid peptides for the production of analgesia. The significant pharmacologic actions of opioids and opioid peptides in gastrointestinal function, immune function, cardiovascular and respiratory regulation, addiction and the cellular mechanisms involved in tolerance and dependence of opioids are also described. The book will be of interest both to researchers investigating the neural mechanisms of the pharmacologic and physiologic functions of the endogenous opioid system and to clinicians who are involved in pain management and assessment.

Book Opioids and Their Receptors

Download or read book Opioids and Their Receptors written by Mariana Spetea and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in opioids such as morphine, the prototypical opioid ligand, has been maintained through the years. The identification of endogenous opioids and their receptors (mu, delta, kappa, and nociceptin), molecular cloning, and the elucidation of the crystal structures of opioid receptors represent key milestones in opioid research. The opioid system modulates numerous pharmacological responses, with therapeutic (i.e., analgesia) and detrimental side effects (i.e., addiction). The medical use and misuse of opioids have dramatically increased, leading to the 21st century opioid crisis. This book presents recent developments in opioid drug discovery, specifically in the medicinal chemistry and pharmacology of new ligands targeting the opioid receptors as effective and safe therapeutics for human diseases. Furthermore, it draws a special attention to advancing concepts and strategies in opioid drug discovery to mitigate opioid liabilities. The diversity among the discussed topics is a testimony to the complexity of the opioid system, which results from the expression, regulation, and functional role of ligands and receptors. The array of multidisciplinary research areas illustrates the rapidly developing basic research and translational activities in opioid drug discovery. This book will serve as a useful reference while also stimulating continued research in the chemistry and pharmacology of opioids and their receptors, with the prospect of developing improved therapies for human diseases, but also improving health and quality of life in general.

Book Advances in Endogenous and Exogenous Opioids

Download or read book Advances in Endogenous and Exogenous Opioids written by Hiroshi Takagi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Endogenous and Exogenous Opioids contains the proceedings of the International Narcotic Research Conference (Satellite Symposium of the 8th International Congress of Pharmacology) held in Kyoto, Japan on July 26-30, 1981. The conference provided a forum for discussing advances that have been made in the understanding of endogenous and exogenous opioids and tackled a wide array of topics ranging from novel opiate binding sites selective for benzomorphan drugs to the purification of opioid receptors and sequellae of receptor binding. Comprised of 156 chapters, this book begins with an analysis of the interaction of opioid peptides and alkaloid opiates with mu-, delta-, and kappa-binding sites. The reader is then systematically introduced to biochemical evidence for kappa and sigma opiate receptors; the action of morphine and oxymorphone as partial agonists on the field-stimulated rat vas deferens; mechanisms of supersensitivity in the enkephalinergic system; and properties of the solubilized opiate receptor from human placenta. Subsequent chapters explore the biosynthesis of opioid peptides as well as their localization, release, and degradation; physiological and pharmacological actions of opioids; and the use of analgesia in acupuncture. Results of behavioral and clinical studies of endogenous and exogenous opioids are also presented, and the structure-activity relationships of opioids are examined. This monograph will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers in the fields of psychiatry and pharmacology.

Book Opioid Analgesics

    Book Details:
  • Author : A.F. Casy
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 1489905855
  • Pages : 526 pages

Download or read book Opioid Analgesics written by A.F. Casy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly burgeoning research of the past two decades on agonist-antagonist analgesics and opioid receptors makes this exhaustive review of opioid anal gesics particularly relevant and timely. After an introductory chapter the additional 12 chapters begin logically with morphine and congeners (4- epoxymorphinans) and end with opioid receptors. All principal chemical types of centrally acting analgesics (including endogenous opioid-like substances) and their antagonists as well as the mixed agonist-antagonists are treated thoroughly, although not always (and for good reason) in historical (chrono logical) order. A chapter on miscellaneous types (atypical structures for the most part) includes the benzimidazoles (etonitazene), aminotetralins (dezocine), tetrahydroisoquinolines (methopholine), and so on. Important aspects and correlations of chemistry, pharmacology, and biochemistry are discussed in depth. Literature citations are numerous. For educators, practicing laboratory scientists, and physicians, this scholarly review by two authors well of opioid analgesics versed in the chemistry, pharmacology, and biochemistry will be informative, stimulating, and thought-provoking. Everette L. May Medical College of Virginia Richmond, VA 23298 v Preface The history of opium predates the written word, although knowledge of its constituents dates back less than 200 years. Over the centuries its popularity for the relief of pain has waxed and waned, until today the opiates are widely recognized as excellent analgesics but with disadvantages that have impaired their use seriously. There is a clear need for a potent analgesic with minimal effects on the respiratory centers and gastrointestinal tract and preferably devoid of dependence liability.

Book Itch

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Carstens
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2014-02-25
  • ISBN : 1466505435
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book Itch written by E. Carstens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in itch research have elucidated differences between itch and pain but have also blurred the distinction between them. There is a long debate about how somatic sensations including touch, pain, itch, and temperature sensitivity are encoded by the nervous system. Research suggests that each sensory modality is processed along a fixed, direct-line communication system from the skin to the brain. Itch: Mechanisms and Treatment presents a timely update on all aspects of itch research and the clinical treatment of itch that accompanies many dermatological conditions including psoriasis, neuropathic itch, cutaneous t-cells lymphomas, and systemic diseases such as kidney and liver disease and cancer. Composed of contributions from distinguished researchers around the world, the book explores topics such as: Neuropathic itch Peripheral neuronal mechanism of itch The role of PAR-2 in neuroimmune communication and itch Mrgprs as itch receptors The role of interleukin-31 and oncostatin M in itch and neuroimmune communication Spinal coding of itch and pain Spinal microcircuits and the regulation of itch Examining new findings on cellular and molecular mechanisms, the book is a compendium of the most current research on itch, its prevalence in society, and the problems associated with treatment.
