The eighth decennial revision of the Pharmacopoeia has given the many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two dis tinct parts, the first being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy, and this, the second, to Pharmacology and Thera peutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work the classification employed is based on'jtqie par ticular physiological systems upon which the various drugs or other agents principally act. There is a complete list of drugs and preparations, without special description, except as to dosage, and very elaborate accounts of their physiological action and therapeutics are given. In these descriptions the effort has been made to present the latest views of the highest authorities in these departments, and to render the book as practically use ful as possible by full details regarding treatment. The two works combined offer, it is believed, a very complete and up to - date presentation of the whole subject of Materia Medica and Therapeutics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pharmacology and Therapeutics: For Students and Practitioners of Medicine The continued immanence of the U.S. Pharmacop ia has delayed the publication of a new edition of this work, as the author felt that the appearance of a revision which should not include the changes in the legal standard would work an injustice to many of those who should purchase the book. While the general plan of the previous edition has been adhered to, extensive alterations have been required, not only to meet the changes in the Pharmacop ia but also to keep apace with the rapid advances in the sciences of pharmacology. The articles on veronal, digitalis, pituitary, atoxyl and salvarsan have been almost completely rewritten and important alterations made in those on potassium, caffeine, dionine, ergot, ipecacuanha, magnesium, calcium, and hexamethylenamine. Some twenty substances not considered in the previous edition have received more or less extensive notice in the present one; among these may be mentioned especially, agaricin, bromural, apiol, cotarnine, chrysarobin, picrotoxin, homatropine, aspidosperma, and thiosinamin. Besides these there have been a number of minor interpolations scattered throughout the work. While the author does not feel that he should surrender his judgment as to the importance of various remedies to that of the Committee on Revision, he does believe that official substances should always be favored by the physician when not to the detriment of the patient. Moreover, for obvious reasons, it is important that a text-book for students should recognize the legal authority of the country on the subject of drugs. Therefore, while it has been deemed advisable to consider a number of unofficial drugs, because of their practical importance, it has also been necessary to include some substances of little remedial value because of their recognition by the Pharmacop ia. One innovation in the U.S. Pharmacop ia which has been followed in this work is especially worthy of note. That is the adoption of the British term "mil" for the thousandth part of a liter. The author realizes that the only object of studying pharmacology is the use of drugs in treating disease, yet, in order to prescribe a drug intelligently it is necessary to have more than a general idea of its action. The greater emphasis is placed upon pharmacology because the author believes that the only place to study Materia Medica is in the laboratory and Therapeutics can best be studied in medicine and the clinics. There are numerous ways in which remedies may be grouped and none is perfect although it seems that a therapeutic grouping has many advantages since it allows a better correlation between the action and the uses of the different agents. Consequently the plan has been to discuss the different groups in a general way and then follow with a detailed description of the individual drugs. The prescriptions are intended only to be representative and to illustrate the ways in which medicines may be prescribed, although many of them have been tried and are in almost daily use by the author. The author claims little if any originality in the material included. He has drawn freely from the current literature and standard books on the subject. He has not considered it wise to include a bibliography in a book of this kind. Yet he would especially desire to mention such books as those of Cushny, Sollmann, Bastedo, Dixon, Hoare and Frohner on pharmacology and therapeutics; those of Law and Hutyra and Marek on medicine and Amy on pharmacy. In conclusion I desire to express my appreciation to Dr. C. P. Fitch for the most excellent chapter on Bacterius, Serums, Vaccines and antitoxins, and to Prof. P. A.
