Book The Birds of Ancient Egypt

Download or read book The Birds of Ancient Egypt written by Patrick F. Houlihan and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2023-09-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as a sumptuously produced and finely illustrated outstanding contribution to ancient Egyptian studies, this facsimile reprint of Patrick Houlihan’s 1986 comprehensive study makes a welcome return in the Oxbow Classics in Egyptology series. Animals of all kinds are amply illustrated in Egyptian art, none more so than birds, in both secular and religious contexts and in hieroglyphic scripts. A great variety of bird species has for millennia made twice yearly migrations passing over Egypt, which is also an important overwintering area for many. These migrant birds, together with indigenous species were an abundant and easily exploited source of food for ancient Egyptians, for domestication and status display. Tomb scenes displaying birds provided as food for the deceased are abundant, as are procession scenes of offering with bearers bringing gifts of fowl. Many birds also had religious associations. Houlihan provides a systematic and unparalleled survey of all the bird life depicted by the ancient Egyptians in art and hieroglyphic writing, some 72 species (plus bats), with a list of known mummified species, and discussions on their religious and secular associations and many illustrations. Their present-day distributions are compared with that known from the time of the Pharoahs. A checklist of the birds of modern Egypt is provided by Steven Goodman.

Book Unbounded Air a collection about birds and their world

Download or read book Unbounded Air a collection about birds and their world written by Bev Fitzgerald and published by Interactive Publications Pty Ltd. This book was released on with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of poems aims to introduce the reader to the richness of birds and the need to care for their world. The poems bring to life their beauty, their song and the intriguing and sometimes funny behaviours as well as their remarkable skills, especially in nest building. The poems are presented in a loose semblance of order beginning with the signifier poem, “Unbounded Air,” followed by the shorebird poems noting the urgent need to address their threatened habitat. This environmental theme continues in many of the poems. When we are more attentive, we see birds in all environments. Travel gives opportunities for fresh discoveries, particularly in Australia’s distinctly different environments. A number of poems reflect this happenstance. Yet, it is at home in our gardens, nearby parks and waterways where we really see birds up close. Many of the later poems represent the richness and diversity that surrounds us if we take time in our own patch. The final poem, “A Murmuration of Birds,” focuses on the awe and wonder of seeing huge numbers of birds in the magic of synchronised flight. A close connection with birds can be transformative. The same occurs when we allow ourselves to be emerged in poetry, to take the time, to read closely and allow our thoughts to move to a new knowing. Surrounded daily by birds, a poet sits down to write. The effect of these poems is as calming, joyful and uplift ing as it is when we watch birds ourselves. Rainforest birds are particularly beautiful and these poems about them, and other birds, are also. Whether you mean to or not, when you write, you reveal yourself and here the nature poet reveals herself as Mary Oliver and Gerard Manly Hopkins and all those other poets of their ilk do too; which is why we treasure them. – Kate Llewellyn, award-winning Australian poet Unbounded Air gives a fascinating insight into the secret lives of wild birds. Fitzgerald introduces us to the dear familiar birds who visit her mountain garden, and to shore birds, eagles, robins, currawongs and other winged creatures she has encountered in the parks, waterways and in her travels. h ese beautiful, funny, sad poems will soar into your imagination and stay there forever. – Sandra Hogan, author of With My Little Eye These beautiful poems wash with colour, beat like wings, soar with song. For Fitzgerald, nature is a language, and noticing a sixth sense. – Kristina Olsson, author of Boy Lost: a Family Memoir

Book Modern Sons of the Pharaohs

Download or read book Modern Sons of the Pharaohs written by Simon Henry Leeder and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interesting study of the Copts deserves attention. The Copts are the descendants of the ancient Egyptians, though many of them show a strain of Syrian or Jewish blood, and the Coptic church preserves in a somewhat debased form the primitive Christianity of the fourth century when it parted from Rome and Constantinople. Through the ages the Copts have preserved their faith and their customs; they form about a tenth of the population of Egypt and play a leading part in commerce. This study of the manners and customs of the Copts is notable for its comprehensive and scholarly handling of the subject, for grace of style and rich, descriptive backgrounds.

Book The Hebrew Pharaohs of Egypt

Download or read book The Hebrew Pharaohs of Egypt written by Ahmed Osman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-09-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reinterpretation of Egyptian and biblical history that shows the Patriarch Joseph and Yuya, a vizier of the eighteenth dynasty king Tuthmosis IV, to be the same person • Uses detailed evidence from Egyptian, biblical, and Koranic sources to place Exodus in the time of Ramses I • Sheds new light on the mysterious and sudden rise of monotheism under Yuya’s daughter, Queen Tiye, and her son Akhnaten When Joseph revealed his identity to his kinsmen who had sold him into slavery, he told them that God had made him “a father to Pharaoh.” Throughout the long history of ancient Egypt, only one man is known to have been given the title “a father to Pharaoh”--Yuya, a vizier of the eighteenth dynasty king Tuthmosis IV. Yuya has long intrigued Egyptologists because he was buried in the Valley of Kings even though he was not a member of the Royal House. His extraordinarily well-preserved mummy has a strong Semitic appearance, which suggests he was not of Egyptian blood, and many aspects of his burial have been shown to be contrary to Egyptian custom. As The Hebrew Pharohs of Egypt shows, the idea that Joseph and Yuya may be one and the same person sheds a whole new light on the sudden rise of monotheism in Egypt, spearheaded by Queen Tiye and her son Akhnaten. It would clearly explain the deliberate obliteration of references to the “heretic” king and his successors by the last eighteenth dynasty pharaoh, Horemheb, whom the author believes was the oppressor king in the Book of Exodus. The author also draws on a wealth of detailed evidence from Egyptian, biblical, and Koranic sources to place the time of the departure of the Hebrews from Egypt during the short reign of Ramses I, the first king of the nineteenth dynasty.
