Book Phantom of the Dolomites

Download or read book Phantom of the Dolomites written by Donna Hennessee Bryan and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992, at a ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and dedicate a memorial to members who lost their lives during World War II, CIA director Robert M. Gates singled out one individual for special comment: Roderick Stephen Goodspeed Hall. Hall?s proposal to "drop a man by parachute" behind enemy lines in northeastern Italy with the plan to obstruct the Brenner Pass and thereby hasten the war?s end, and his eventual death in a Nazi prison camp, have been the subject of a biography by combat historian Patrick K. O?Donnell, who calls the episode "the most daring spy mission" of the war. Donna Hennessee Bryan, whose mother-in-law was Hall?s non-genetically-related first cousin and also his first sweetheart, reveals how family dynamics helped motivate Hall to dream up and try to execute such a daring plan. Published here for the first time are two of Hall's stories, confirming his desire to be a writer and perhaps the hero of his own story. Also published here for the first time in English is a transcription of Hall's wartime diary along with annotations by Italian historian Paolo Zoratti. But most meaningful of all is Bryan's account of the extent to which Hall is remembered decades later in northeastern Italy, based on interviews with partisans he worked with and on Bryan's participation in ceremonies organized to tell the story of the Italian Resistance and remember the legacy of Steve Hall. As Gates appreciated, Hall's saga is one of the most memorable stories to come out of World War II.

Once again Richard Pike has brought together brilliant, hitherto unpublished accounts across eighteen chapters. And now there is coverage of the Americans. So, with both British and American perspectives, Phantom Boys 2 is packed with exhilarating action. From combat in the Vietnam War to life after the Falklands War, readers will experience a variety of wartime and peacetime tales. An array of narratives from air and ground crew cover adventures across the world; from the UK, US and Germany to the Far East. It also includes the fascinating story of one female fighter controller’s chance to fly in a Phantom during the 1970s. Throughout the book Richard Pike captures the drama and emotion of life in the cockpit. With such detailed stories, readers will be gripped by this captivating book. “Pike has done an excellent job of drawing the reader into the cockpit and then into the skies. The shared tales are engaging and quickly read. While each tale is relatively short—typically less than fifteen pages—all are packed with the detalis, sights, and sounds of flying one of the modern age’s most iconic jet fighters.” —Air Power History

Even with 200 new routes since the first edition it is still, however, woefully underdeveloped. Already a mecca for ice climbers, the Ghost is fast becoming one of the premier rockclimbing areas in Western Canada. It is a virtual candy store of new routes and will remain so for some time to come. Over 35 kilometres of steep cliff line, coupled with its remote and relatively wild nature, make for an unforgettable rock climbing experience.
