Book The Essential Guide to Workplace Mediation Conflict Resolution

Download or read book The Essential Guide to Workplace Mediation Conflict Resolution written by Nora Doherty and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workplace mediation is becoming an increasingly popular dispute resolution method to settle interpersonal employee conflicts, including harassment and bullying complaints. There is a direct ratio between the quality of relationships across the workplace and long-term effectiveness and success. Mediation addresses complex relationship difficulties head-on so that working relationships can be restored. Fostering a philosophy of mediation as a culture and a "co-entrepreneurial" business model, Doherty and Guyler consider what mediation is, why it is necessary and how it works, including the main principles of operation and the 6-step structure of a mediation meeting. They analyze the reasons for conflict and suggest useful everyday communication skills to help defuse anger or aggression. Real case studies look at specific complaints of bullying, of sexual harassment and of racism, generational conflicts within family businesses and boardroom conflicts between chairmen and CEOs.

Book Personal Conflict Management

Download or read book Personal Conflict Management written by Suzanne Mccorkle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal Conflict Management utilizes a modernized theory/skill approach to interpersonal conflict, placing equal emphasis on the theoretical and practical. Supporting the notion that there is not one correct approach to conflict management, and utilizing the authors’ shared experiences as mediators and organizational facilitators, this text demonstrates the value of collaborative models for resolving conflict and the necessity and benefits in understanding competitive approaches. Through the inclusion of both competitive and cooperative theories, the authors present contrasting perspectives of conflict management. Beginning with an introduction to conflict, the text examines the major approaches and theories of conflict management. Following a discussion of the causes and variables which exist within conflicts, the skills necessary for conflict management are analyzed, including listening, the ability to seek information, the importance of understanding personality types and behavior patters, negotiation, and conflict assessment. The final two sections of the text take the reader beyond the basics, exploring the difficulties encountered in conflict management, the aftermath to a conflict, and conflicts in context, applying the theoretical concepts to everyday situations. Written in an academic yet reader-friendly style, this textbook is enjoyable and thought-provoking for both students and instructors. Case studies, examples, essay suggestions, discussion questions, etc support an interactive environment that optimizes learning opportunities. Instructors will find these features useful in the development of classroom discussions and assignments, while students will benefit from the opportunity to examine their own conflict behavior and enhance their skills in conflict management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managers working in today’s organizations often focus more on results than on the people who achieve those results. But regularly evaluating the performance of your employees is critical to improving the efficiency and output of your organization. Performance reviews have changed significantly in the past few years. Companies today are looking for the key characteristics, known as competencies, that help the most successful people in their field to be so successful. Managers and employees need to focus on those competencies, especially during performance review discussions. Competency-Based Performance Reviews offers you a new and more effective way to handle performance reviews and to coach your employees to emphasize the knowledge, skills, and abilities that they have and the organization needs. Most sophisticated U.S. and international employers are using competency-based systems to select, interview, and evaluate the performance of employees. Fortune 500 corporations such as American Express, Anheuser Busch, Coca-Cola, Disney, Federal Express, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer are all looking for specific competencies. This book will give you the guidance you need to: — Perform competency-based reviews on your employees. — Help your team get the recognition they deserve in division meetings by providing the evidence to justify higher performance rankings. — Develop your own competencies—and those of your employees. — Coach employees to recognize competency-based accomplishments and advocate for themselves throughout the year. — Write smarter, targeted competency-based accomplishment statements to use on performance review forms. By putting these competency-based performance reviews into practice, managers can strengthen their organziations, their careers, as well as the careers of their employees. Competency-Based Performance Reviews includes sample phrases to use on reviews, as well as sample accomplishment statements to guide employees to improving and writing their own.
